The Zaandam had been stuck in the Pacific Ocean since March 14 after dozens of the 1,800 people on board reported flu-like symptoms and several South American ports refused to let it dock. The ship's Dutch owner Holland America said Friday four passengers had died and two more had tested positive for COVID- 19. Panama on Saturday reversed its decision to block the Zaandam from its canal, and said it would be allowed to pass "to provide humanitarian help." Another ship, the Rotterdam, has since arrived off the coast of Panama from San Diego carrying food, medical staff, testing kits, medicine and food for the beleaguered vessel. Passengers showing no signs of the virus were ferried from the Zaandam to the Rotterdam on Saturday, a French tourist told AFP by telephone. "It's like emptying a bathtub with a teaspoon," she said. "The boats can hold about 100 people, and they are putting about half in at a time. That's why it's going slowly." The Zaandam cruise liner left Buenos Aires on March 7 and was supposed to arrive two weeks later at San Antonio, near Santiago in Chile.

Every time a cruise ship visits Southampton, it is estimated to bring a cash boost of £2m and in 2017 there were more than 500 cruise calls. ABP Southampton Director, Alastair Welch, said: “2017 was a record-breaking year for the Port of Southampton and 2018 looks set to be even busier. “A huge amount of work goes into ensuring all passengers transit our facilities with the greatest of ease and it is testament to our whole port community that 2m cruise passengers receive Southampton’s world class service.” In 2017 the port experienced its busiest long weekend ever when 15 cruise ships visited the port in June. And it was recognised for the ninth consecutive year as the Best UK Departure Port by Cruise Critic UK editors. In 2018 the port can look forward to eight maiden calls and a naming ceremony for Azamara Pursuit. New ships calling for the first time in Southampton will be: Aida Perla; Norwegian Bliss; MSC Meraviglia; Sapphire Princess; MS Zuiderdam; Seven Seas Navigator and MS Koningsdam.     Case Study for Small Cruise Ships in Key West It’s not a ban. If enacted by voters, the amendments to the city charter will reduce the size of cruise ships that call on Key West and the number of passengers that disembark each day. Cruise ships with the capacity to carry 1,300 or more persons (passengers and crew) will be prohibited; and the maximum number of persons disembarking each day will be limited to 1,500. This would allow for one small cruise ship of 1,300-capacity, or two very small cruise ships of 750-capacity. Prior to the “no-sail” order issued by the CDC, Key West was scheduled to receive 29 port calls by 11 qualifying vessels in calendar 2020. Some who are opposed to the referenda’s passage have used this figure to claim that the amendments would cause a 95% reduction in visits by cruise ships. Their estimate assumes a 0% increase to port calls by small ships over current figures. However, the amendments were drafted with the goal of increasing port calls by qualifying small cruise ships. Key West is one of the most desirable destinations in a very desirable region. Its unparalleled architecture, history, and subtropical climate and ecology make it a worldwide draw. The relatively low number of small ships in the past owes partly to the fact that small cruise ships are generally averse to calling on ports that are dominated by large cruise ships The amendments will only emphasize the fact that Key West is ideally suited to small cruise ships.
