Trimboli Assessing the Impact of Mercury Bioaccumulation in Mammoth Cave National Park 1 Cathleen Webb 1 Chemistry Department, Western Kentucky University Abstract This project will examine the fate and transport of mercury in Mammoth Cave National Park, which has an extensive karst ecosystem. Contaminant transport in karst systems (limestone based surface geology) is rapid and extensive. Mercury’s mobility in surface and ground water is of great concern due to its toxicity and ability to bio-magnify within food chains. However, mercury interacts with limestone, thus impairing its mobility. A number of federally listed species are declining in the parks. Further, Kentucky has issued a statewide mercury fi sh consumption advisory. With eight new coal-fi red power plant applications under consideration in Kentucky, the potential exists for increased mercury deposition. Acquiring an understanding of mercury’s bio-magnifi cation through the food-chain, with an emphasis on federally listed species, will enhance NPS’s ability to obtain emission reductions.     SPELUNKING WITH SOCRATES: A STUDY OF SOCRATIC PEDAGOGY IN PLATo'S REPUBLIC Victor Isaac Boutros Baylor University I. Introduction Though Plato never wrote a dialogue that explicitly asks "Whatis education?" few argue that he is uninterested inthe subject; after all, Plato, like Socrates, was a teacher.l In his magnum opus, theRepublic, Plato deals witheducationrepeat­ edly. The education of the guardian class and the allegory of the cave present two landmark pedagogical passages. Yet to catch a glimpse of Socratic pedagogy, we must first sift through the intricacies of dialogue. In addition to the com­ plexity inherent in dramatic context, it seems clear that Socrates' remarks are often steeped inirony.2 Thus, westumble upon a problem: how should we read these passages on education? Does Plato meanfor us to read them genuinelyor ironically? I will argue that Plato uses the dramatic context of the Republic to suggest thatSocrates presents the education of the guardians ironically, while reserving the allegory of the cave for a glimpse of Socrates' genuine pedagogy. The first portion of this paper will analyze various dramatic elements that indicate Socrates' ironic intent with respect to the education of the guardians. The second portion will focus on the alle­ gory of the cave as Socrates' genuine conception of ideal paideia (or education). II. Dramatic Context and the Introduction of Irony A. Conventional Irony Unfortunately, we cannot look at Plato's treatise on edu­ cation to learn about his educational theory because he does not write analytical treatises. Instead, Plato employs written dialogues to inspire philosophical insight in his students.

Prueba de ello son los restos de arte rupestre y yacimientos paleontológicos descritos en muchas cuevas o el creciente número de visitantes anuales que tienen. Sin embargo, en las últimas décadas los equipos de científicos y espeleólogos se han ocupado especialmente del karst en términos de cifras, con especial énfasis en grandes cavidades. Bien, atendiendo al tamaño de las mismas en su desarrollo horizontal o vertical, o de forma parcial, midiendo volúmenes de galerías y conductos, cámaras o espeleotemas, entre otros elementos. To managereef tourism effectively a greaterunderstanding is neededof reef ecological processesand the impactsthat tourist activities haveon them. This study explores the impact of divers and snorkelerson the reefs of St. Lucia, West Indies, and how the reef environmentaffects tourists' perceptionsand experiencesof them. Observationsof divers and snorkelersrevealed that their impact on the reefs followed certainpatterns and could be predictedfrom individuals', site and dive characteristics.Camera use, night diving and shorediving were correlatedwith higher levels of diver damage.Briefings by dive leadersalone did not reducetourist contactswith the reef but interventiondid. Interviewswith tourists revealedthat many choseto visit St. Lucia becauseof its marineprotected area. Certain site attributes,especially marine life, affectedtourists' experiencesand overall enjoyment of reefs.Tourists were not alwaysable to correctly ascertainabundance of marine life or sedimentpollution but they were sensitiveto, and disliked seeingdamaged coral, poor underwatervisibility, garbageand other tourists damagingthe reef. Scott Maxwell from Grant High School in Mount Gambier is the winner of the 2018 ARIA Music Teacher of the Year. The win was announced at the star-studded ARIA Awards, held at The Star in Sydney. The ARIA Music Teacher of the Year Award is run in partnership with leading arts education organisation, The Song Room and sponsored by Telstra. It’s been a wild ride for Scott, who was selected from hundreds of submissions. His inclusion as an official ARIA Nominee was celebrated with a surprise visit by Guy Sebastian, who made the trip to Grant High School in October and sang his hit song Battle Scars with students from the music program. Since then, four nominees from across Australia have been put to a public vote, with tens of thousands from around the country showing their support for their favourite music educator. ‘Maxi’ as he is affectionately known, has transformed the music program at Grant High since he took over in 2009. There are now double the amount of music programs offered at the school, and triple the number of students enrolled in the music program. Scott’s success is attributed to his aspiration to make as many music genres accessible as possible, to adapting his teaching to suit the needs of his students, and to placing an emphasis on creating opportunities for public performances. His approach has seen the cohort at Grant High School thrive. What started as small live shows in the school canteen at lunch time, has quickly grown to full community festivals for students to perform under Scott’s guidance.
