Dealers’ Room: Jennifer Brooks As we open the doors on FOGcon 9, we can hope that it will run smoothly, and that payback for the challenging Writers’ Workshop: Keyan Bowes planning process will be minimal challenges during the convention itself. If that turns out to be wrong, we now know how good we are at rolling with the punches. As members of the convention, we’re counting on you to help where you see needs, and ask about whatever you can’t find or can’t figure out. However these three days play out, we’re all committed to doing whatever we can to make sure all of you enjoy yourselves, find stimulation for your brain and your heart, get an opportunity to connect with our marvelous hon- ored guests, meet new people (if you want to) and, at the end of the weekend, are glad that you came. Honored guests Becky Chambers and Karen Joy Fowler, and honored ghost Ursula K. Le Guin, are celebrated in later pages of this book. So we’ll just extend a special welcome to Becky and Karen, and to the spirit of Ursula, and an equally special welcome to each and every one of you: in the most literal sense, we couldn’t do this without you. SFF slice-of-life and “healing” stories are fairly Chambers easy to find in, for example, Japanese TV dramas or comics. Not so in the English-language genre publishing world. In fact, there’s so little of it that the pace and focus of The Long Way took many readers by surprise. Fortu- nately, it proved to be a good surprise for most of us, net- ting award nominations and one of the most robust word- of-mouth referral armies that I’ve ever encountered.     Mirrorshade Women: Feminism and Cyberpunk at the Turn of the Twenty-first Century Carlen Lavigne McGill University, Montréal Department of Art History and Communication Studies February 2008 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communication Studies © Carlen Lavigne 2008 2 Abstract This study analyzes works of cyberpunk literature written between 1981 and 2005, and positions women’s cyberpunk as part of a larger cultural discussion of feminist issues. It traces the origins of the genre, reviews critical reactions, and subsequently outlines the ways in which women’s cyberpunk altered genre conventions in order to advance specifically feminist points of view. Novels are examined within their historical contexts; their content is compared to broader trends and controversies within contemporary feminism, and their themes are revealed to be visible reflections of feminist discourse at the end of the twentieth century. The study will ultimately make a case for the treatment of feminist cyberpunk as a unique vehicle for the examination of contemporary women’s issues, and for the analysis of feminist science fiction as a complex source of political ideas.     Art & Activism in the Age of the ‘Obesity Epidemic’ by Pamela Grombacher A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in HISTORY OF ART, DESIGN AND VISUAL CULTURE Department of Art and Design University of Alberta © Pamela Grombacher, 2014 Abstract This thesis considers three contemporary artworks that open up new possibilities for size acceptance activism, a political movement that arose in the late 1960s to combat fat stigma and weight-based discrimination. Fatness is vilified in many parts of the world as an unhealthy, unattractive, and, most significantly, immoral embodiment. This is due, in part, to “healthism,” or the moralization of health, and to the perceived controllability of body size. In cultures where health is viewed as a moral obligation and size is viewed as a personal choice, fat people are discriminated against for supposedly choosing to be unhealthy. Fat stigma has worsened in the wake of the “obesity epidemic,” the alarmist rhetoric of which frames fatness as a lurking and deadly contagion that threatens to destroy public health. There are those within the size acceptance movement, however, who question the legitimacy of this “epidemic” as a true health crisis and suggest that it is instead a moral panic that reflects cultural anxieties about personal accountability. As politicians, medical practitioners and diet industrialists wage a “War on Obesity” to eradicate fatness and thus rid society of this alleged scourge, size acceptance activists resist weight-based discrimination by arguing that stigma, rather than fat, is the true enemy to be conquered. I suggest new possibilities for resistance by analyzing artworks that subvert hegemonic notions of fat in novel and nuanced ways.

    THAT STATEMENT CONNECTS the modern Steam Punk Movement, The Jetsons, Metropolis, Disney's Tomorrowland, and the other items that we are celebrating this weekend. Some of those past futures were unpleasant: the Days of Future Past of the X-Men are a shadow of a future that the adult Kate Pryde wanted to avoid when she went back to the present day of the early 1980s. Others set goals and dreams; the original Star Trek gave us the dreams and goals of a bright and shiny future t h a t h a v e i n s p i r e d generations of scientists and engineers. Robert Heinlein took us to the Past through Tomorrow in his Future History series, and Asimov's Foundation built planet-wide cities and we collect these elements of the past for the future. We love the fashion of the Steampunk movement; and every year someone is still asking for their long-promised jet pack. We take the ancient myths of the past and reinterpret them for the present and the future, both proving and making them still relevant today. Science Fiction and Fantasy fandom is both nostalgic and forward-looking, and the whole contradictory nature is in this year's theme. Many of the years that previous generations of writers looked forward to happened years ago; 1984, 1999, 2001, even 2010. The assumptions of those time periods are perhaps out-of-date; technology and society have passed those stories by, but there are elements that still speak to us today. It is said that the Golden Age of Science Fiction is when you are 13.
