  • Klerksdorp, Transvaal on the Banks of the Schoonspruit
Chapter 10 – Klerksdorp, Transvaal On the Banks of the Schoonspruit Klerksdorp, the oldest town in the Transvaal, was founded in 1837 by the early Voortrekkers. 1 It lies on the Skoorspruit (Fair River) and was named after a certain Mr de Clerq who acted as secretary to the Voortrekker leader, Andries Hendrik Potgieter. It is situated some thirty miles from Potchefstroom. The country was still teeming with game. Large herds of Springbok, 2 Blesbok, 3 and Wildebeest 4 roamed the veld, while Hippopotami cavorted in the river which now meanders so peacefully through the Convent grounds. About 150 years ago elands 5 were shot on the hill overlooking the Convent. This hill is still known as “Elandsheuwel”. Snakes, too, were plentiful then; the early chronicle frequently relates incidents of dogs wrestling with cobras and puff adders until they succumbed to the reptiles’ venom; and how inguanas 6 came up from the river, “milked the cows, took toll of the eggs in the poultry roosts, killing hens and chickens.” Lions and leopards also lurked for their prey in the high grass, till at last they were driven away or shot. The first township consisted of only 25 plots and was known as “de Oude Dorp” (the old village). In 1886 gold was discovered nearby and a new township was started which soon overshadowed the other on the opposite bank of the stream, attaining such prosperity that it supported a Stock Exchange. Erratic deposits and difficulties in extracting the precious metal put an end to most of these activities. Its mining fortunes were, however, revived on the discovery that the Rand Gold Reef extended beyond Randfontein.

  • Proposed Extension of the Ash Disposal Facilities at Camden Power Station
Proposed extension of the ash disposal facilities at Camden power station Social Impact Assessment Prepared by: Ptersa Environmental Management Consultants PO Box 915 751 Faerie Glen 0043 Contact person: Ilse Aucamp Prepared for: Zitholele Consulting (Pty) Ltd February 2012 Ptersa Social Impact Assessment EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Eskom is currently operating the Camden Power Station as part of its electricity generation fleet. Throughout the operational life of the power station, ash is being generated at the station. The ash is being disposed of at an authorised ash disposal site within the Camden Power Station premises. The current ash disposal site is reaching the end of its capacity, and it is anticipated that a new ash disposal facility will be required by approximately mid 2014. In order to establish a new ash disposal facility within close proximity to the power station, a site selection exercise was undertaken. The site alternatives for the proposed project are located at the existing Camden Power Station approximately 12 km outside the town of Ermelo in the Mpumalanga Province. The area is in the boundaries of the Msukaligwa Local Municipality in the Gert Sibande District Municipality. It is a rural area with high levels of unemployment and poverty. There are a number of key stakeholders in the project. The farming community can be divided in three groups. The first group is the people who own the affected properties and make a living from the properties – either by rental income or income earned by actively working the land. The second group is the people who rent the affected properties and work the land to supplement their income.

HUDSON Under the DireCtion of Dr. Mohammed Hassen Ali and Dr. Jared Poley ABSTRACT Apart from a sense of racial superiority, which was certainly not unique to white Cape colonists, what is clear is that at the turn of the nineteenth century, Afrikaners were a disparate group. Economically, geographically, educationally, and religiously they were by no means united. Hierarchies existed throughout all cross sections of society. There was little political consciousness and no sense of a nation. Yet by the end of the nineteenth century they had developed a distinct sense of nationalism, indeed of a volk [people; ethnicity] ordained by God. The objective of this thesis is to identify and analyze three key historical events, the emotional sentiments evoked by these nationalistic milestones, and the evolution of a unified Afrikaner identity that would ultimately be used to justify the abhorrent system of apartheid.

  • The Rubidge Collection of Fossil Karroo Vertebrates
THE RUBIDGE COLLECTION OF FOSSIL KARROO VERTEBRATES By S. H. Haughton, F.R.S. Wherever palaeontologists interested in fossils from the strata of the Karroo system discuss the systematics and evolutionary importance of Permian and Triassic vertebrates they perforce have to consider the facts that have been revealed by studies of the hundreds of specimens forming what is known as the "Rubidge Collection". Housed in the family home on the farm W ellwood in the district of Graaff Reinet, Cape Province, this magnificent collection has been gathered together by the enthusiasm and generosity of one man-Sidney H. Rubidge, farmer and Honorary Doctor of Science of the University of the Orange Free State. Among those who deserve the honoured title of "amateur", one who pursues a hobby for pure love and without thought of material gain, Dr S. H. Rubidge must rank very high. The name Rubidge was not by any means unknown to Science before Sidney added lustre to it. Among the associates of, and collaborators with, Andrew Geddes Bain-the "father of South African geology"-was Dr Richard Nathaniel Rubidge, who had come in 1821, at the age of two years, with his father to South Africa from Wales, beginning his South African life in Grahamstown. He became the leading medical doctor in Port Elizabeth and was a co-founder of the Provincial Hospital in that city. He was also an ardent botanist as well as an enthusiastic collector of fossils, especially of the Cretaceous fossils of the Uiten hage basin. He sent collections, from both the Cretaceous and Karroo beds, to London and also had papers on various aspects of South African geology published by the Geological Society of London, of which he was a Fellow, including one of the occurrence of gold in dolerite dykes at Smithfield in the Orange Free State and another in which he gives his own interpretation of the relations of the various formations in the Ceres area.
