U.S. Preclearance at Halifax Stanfield International Airport: Since Spring 2006, non-stop U.S. bound passengers traveling from Halifax Stanfield International Airport now uses the new U.S. Preclearance Facility. Languages Both of Canada's official languages – English and French - are spoken in Nova Scotia.

Time Zone Nova Scotia is on Atlantic Daylight Time, which is four hours earlier than Greenwich Mean Time and one hour later than North America's Eastern Time Zone. Daylight Saving Time is in effect from the first Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October.

Climate Nova Scotia is known as a place where the four seasons are refreshingly distinct. Average daily temperatures are 10 to 16 °C (50 to 61°F) in the spring; 20 to 25°C (68 to 77F) in the summer; 12 to 15°C (54 to 59°F) in the fall and -2 to 1°C (28 to 34°F) in the winter. Average rainfall is 1,178 millimeters / 46.38 inches per year.

Area code 902 - This area code must be dialed for long distance calls into or within Nova Scotia.

Sales Tax & Rebates The Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) is applied at a single rate of 15% to a base of goods and services. If you are a non-resident (non- Canadian) sponsor, organizer, exhibitor, incentive house, or a participant in an event, you may be eligible for a rebate of this tax. Items on which you may be able to claim a rebate include convention facilities, advertising materials, AV services, transportation services, speakers' fees and accommodations. Rebate forms and more detailed information are available from Visitor Information Centres, Canada Customs and Revenue Agency offices, Canada Customs ports, and many accommodations. Accommodations in Halifax charge a Hotel Levy of 2% on room rates. This levy assists with the cost of on-going marketing efforts to promote Halifax as a world class business and leisure destination.

Currency Canada's currency is based on the decimal system, with 100 cents to the dollar. You can exchange your currency for Canadian currency at authorized currency exchange counters at the Visitor Information Centre in Yarmouth, at the Halifax International Airport, and in Halifax. You can also exchange currency at banks, credit unions and trust companies throughout Nova Scotia.

Banks Banking hours vary, with most banks open Monday to Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Some banks are open on Saturday but are closed on federal and provincial holidays. Automated banking machines and debit (Interac, Cirrus, Plus, etc.) services are widely available.

Credit/Debit Cards A majority of stores, restaurants and accommodations throughout Nova Scotia accept major credit cards, including Visa, MasterCard, and American Express. Debit (bank) cards can be used almost as readily (Interac, Cirrus, Plus). Credit and debit card charges will appear on your statement, converted to your home currency.

Hospital/Medical Services Visitors to Canada are strongly urged to obtain health insurance before leaving their home country. Canadian hospital and medical services are excellent, but a hospital stay can be costly without adequate insurance coverage. Visitors taking prescribed medications are advised to have a copy of their prescription, in case it needs to be renewed during the trip.

Sunday Shopping Most stores in Halifax and throughout the province of Nova Scotia are open on Sundays, including shopping malls, department stores, grocery stores and boutiques. Weather Forecasts Weather forecasts in Nova Scotia are given in Celsius measurements.
