Materials List for Janet A. Cook’s Pen and Ink Figurative Workshop – September 2018 - [email protected] JanetACook.com Pens For the majority of this workshop we will be using Micron pens, they are based on ‘technical pens’ for drafting, and need only the weight of the pen itself to draw a line. Please bare this in mind when you first start to work with these pens. They work best on smooth paper, as rough paper wears the nib out very quickly. On the first day, just bring the Micron pens and a smooth papered sketchbook. 1. Sakura Pigma Micron Pens with a fine nib; Size 0.005, in Orange, Brown and Black (store flat) 2. Sakura Pigma Micron Pen in Yellow, Size 0.01, (NOTE! Yellow is not available in .005 size) 3. Copic Multiliner Pens: Black, Brown and Sepia Size: 0.03mm – these pens have a very fine nib and are good for tiny details. (Store with nib facing down. 4. Ball point pens have become very popular recently as a drawing tool. Please bring one of the following. One Black Zebra Pen F301 0.7mm. Or, One Bic Pen Or a Parker ballpoint pen with a fine nib (Optional) Zebra pens are also available in green, red, and blue from Staples. NOTE, you won’t find them in BLICK, but you will find Roller Ball and Gel Pens however, these are NOT ballpoint pens (I know, confusing). Ask an assistant if you are not sure. 5. (Optional) Multi colored ballpoint pen ‘6 Click Multi Color Pen’, comes with pink and purple, yellow, green and blue. 6. Sakura White Gelly Roll, Fine or Medium Point Pen (for fixing details). 7. Faber-Castell PITT artist Pen, White 101. 8. (Optional) Copic Marker pen in Red (any red), and any other color you like. These will be used for coloring clothing or backgrounds and one ‘Colorless blender’. Used for creating illusion of folds. (See Stores below for sourcing) Paper 1. Choose a white or pale color paper sketchbook that is easy to carry around with you; for example 9” x 6”, you may work larger or smaller if you prefer. Try to get one with a spiral, as the pages lay flat. I also like the paper in Moleskin sketchbooks, it’s very smooth, but no spiral. If you prefer loose sheets of paper that’s ok too, just make sure the paper has a high rag (cotton) content and is very, very smooth! 2. Bring 3-6 toned light to mid value, smooth (any colors) 10x8 inches or similar. 3. Bring 2 sheets of foam core board about 2 inches or larger than your paper to transport your work and act as a drawing board. 4. Bring ‘Artists Tape’ to secure paper to your board. 5. Smooth patterned paper with a value of no more than 1 to 3, with 1 being white. This is often hard to find but I will provide some too. 6. Old pages from a book, magazine or map. You will draw over these. 7. One pad of HOT PRESSED Watercolor Paper Block either: Fabriano Artistico HOT PRESSED Watercolor paper block. White, 9x12 inches or larger. Or Arches Aquarelle HOT PRESSED Watercolor paper block, 140 Lb, white. 9x12 inches or larger. Or a single sheet of HOT PRESSED 140 or 200 LB or greater, cut into smaller quarters. Bring ‘Artists Tape’ to secure it to your foam core board. Optional: Colored pencils, these can be added over marker and pen – I like Derwent but any make will do. Bring assortment – of light, medium and dark values in reds and browns, white and blues. Paint & brushes I use water media placed over the pen and ink, you may bring either Watercolor or Acrylic. If you want to experiment, bring both. 1. Two or three small tubes of Acrylic paint (any brand you like) in White and any other colors that appeal to you that have a value 4 or darker (where 1 is white); I use Prussian Blue and Cadmium Red. These will be brushed over your drawing and highlights picked out in white. 2. Travel size Watercolor tin with little blocks or little tubes. Colors: Cadmium Yellow, Raw Sienna, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Cerlium Blue, Burnt Sienna, Sap Green, Ultramarine Blue, and Black. 3. Water container. 4. Paper towels. 5.
