Tavares‑Martins1,2 Abstract Background: Many natural compounds have been identifed and synthesized by the advancement of bryophytes phytochemistry studies. This work aimed to report the composition of Neckeropsis undulata (Hedw.) Reichardt moss volatiles, sampled in the Combú Island, Belém city, Pará state, Brazil. The volatile concentrate of N. undulata was obtained by a simultaneous distillation‑extraction micro‑system, analyzed by GC and GC‑MS, and reported for the frst time. Results: Ten compounds were identifed in the volatile concentrate, corresponding to 91.6% of the total, being 1‑octen‑3‑ol (35.7%), α‑muurolol (21.4%), naphthalene (11.3%), and n‑hexanal (10.0 %) the main constituents. Most of the constituents of the N. undulata volatile concentrate have been previously identifed in other mosses, and liver‑ worts spread wide in the world. Conclusions: 1‑Octen‑3‑ol, n‑hexanal, 2‑ethylhexanol, isoamyl propionate, and octan‑3‑one are already known metabolic products obtained from enzymatic oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids, belonging to the large family of minor oxygenated compounds known as oxylipins. The knowledge of the composition of volatiles from moss N. undulata could contribute to the Neckeraceae species’ chemotaxonomy. Siles. Sci. Natur., 68: 11-24, 2019. Abstract: A new bryophyte checklist for Afghanistan is presented, including all published records since the beginning of collection activities in 1839 ‒1840 by W. Griffith till present. Considering several unidentified collections in various herbaria, 23 new records for Afghanistan together with the collection data can be added to the flora. Beside a new genus, Asterella , the new records include Amblystegium serpens var. serpens, Brachythecium erythrorrhizon, Bryum dichotomum, B. elwendicum, B. pallens, B. weigelii, Dichodontium palustre, Didymodon luridus, D. tectorum, Distichium inclinatum, Entosthodon muhlenbergii, Hygroamblystegium fluviatile subsp. fluviatile, Oncophorus virens, Orthotrichum rupestre var. sturmii, Pogonatum urnigerum, Pseudocrossidium revolutum, Pterygoneurum ovatum, Schistidium rivulare, Syntrichia handelii, Tortella inflexa, T. tortuosa, and Tortula muralis subsp. obtusifolia . Therewith the number of species increase to 24 liverworts, 246 mosses and one hornwort. In addition, a historical overview of the country's exploration and a full biogeography of Afghan bryophytes is given. Key words: Bryophytes, checklist, flora, phytodiversity. The bryoflora of the Czech Republic is analysed using an updated version of the checklist that includes recent taxonomic and nomenclatural changes. In addition, the baseline data was com- pletely revised using the IUCN 3.1 criteria. The main list includes 863 species of bryophytes (4 hornworts, 207 liverworts and 652 mosses) with 5 additional subspecies and 23 generally recog- nized varieties; 9 additional species are listed as of doubtful taxonomic status and 17 other species are evaluated as of uncertain occurrence. Of the 892 taxa evaluated, 46% qualified for inclusion in Red List categories (40 taxa in category RE, 70 in CR, 88 in EN, 93 in VU, 66 in LR-nt, 24 in DD-va and 30 in DD), while 54% are considered Least Concern (LC). -

It is irregularly branched, the branches short and more or less prostrate, usually forming compact patches or growing as scattered shoots among other species. They alter little when dry. The leaves are egg-shaped or oval, about 1 mm or so in length, broadly pointed at the tip and deeply concave. Often they are erect and overlapping, making the shoots look cylindrical, but sometimes they are more loosely arranged, slightly spreading, and the shoots then appear less neat. The branch tip does not become very attenuated, and is often blunt because of the concave, appressed and overlapping leaves. The leaves have a single nerve. Curved, oblong capsules, about 1.5 mm long, are often present and have a long, beaked lid that is almost as long as the capsule. The seta is smooth. Similar species The concave leaves and rather short cylindrical branches are distinctive, but loose forms of R. murale may resemble R. confertum (p. 761), especially when the leaves are narrow and spreading. Usually, however, some parts of the shoots will show deeply concave, appressed and overlapping leaves. Small patches of Scleropodium cespitans (p. 754) and especially S. tourettii (p. 755) might be mistaken for R. murale, but fortunately R. murale often has capsules, and can then be distinguished by its beaked lid and smooth seta. -

S., Appalachian State University Thesis Chairperson: Zack Murrell The generic affinities of the aquatic moss genus Platyhypnidium were investigated by several analytic techniques: traditional light microscopy, phenetic analyses of dimensional measurements (Analysis of Variance and Principal Components Analysis), and phylogenetic analyses of morphological and molecular data. Ten rostrate-operculate Brachytheciaceae were closely studied. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the nuclear ribosomal DNA was used as a molecular marker in three of the phylogenetic analyses. Platyhypnidium, represented by P. riparioides, P. aquaticum, P. muelleri, P. fuegianum, and P. pringlei, was compared with five terrestrial species belonging to Rhynchostegium and Eurhynchium. The taxa studied did not form a monophyletic lineage within the family. Platyhypnidium itself was resolved as polyphyletic. Platyhypnidium aquaticum and P. riparioides are closely related to terrestrial species of Rhynchostegium. -

In total thirthy-three epiphytic bryophyte species were found (29 mosses, 4 liverworts) in 60 sample plots, each 20 x 20 cm in size. In order to evaluate the relative abundance of bryophyte communities in the epiphytic habitats on trunks, index of ecological significance (IES) was used. Multivariate statistical analyses (TWINSPAN and DECORANA) were also used to classify and to determine the epiphytic bryophyte community structures in successional stages. The multivariate statistical analyses results indicated that the sample plots were divided into two main clusters and five subclusters associated with gradient of successional satages. Vertical (tree height) and horizontal (tree diameter) distribution patterns of epiphytic bryophytes and their life forms were also observed along a gradient of height and the gradient of age of the Platanus orientalis. Orthotrichum diaphanum, Eurhynchium striatum, E. angustirete and Brachythecium albicans were only found on young trees, Brachythecium rutabulum and Cinclidotus riparius were only found on middle-aged trees, and Cirriphyllum crassinervium and Cratoneuron filicinum were only growing on old trees.
