Know Your University – The Vice Chancellors

Banaras Hindu University has the distinction of having great men of letters, scholars, statesmen and visionaries as its Vice Chancellors. Sir Sunder Lal Judge of the Allahabad High Court and the erstwhile Secretary of "The Hindu University Society" was the first Vice-Chancellor of the University. He took charge on 4th February 1916 and continued till December 1918. He was followed by Dr. P.S. Siwa Swamy Iyer. In 1919 Malaviya jee himself took charge of the University and remained at the helm till 6th September 1939. In 1939 outstanding scholar, a great exponent of Indian Philosophy and Professor of International fame, Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan became the Vice-Chancellor and guided the destiny of the University for nine years.
