Box 56, Dunedin, New Zealand Received 13 November 2002; received in revised form 16 December 2002; accepted 20 December 2002 Abstract Larval helminths of different species that share the same intermediate host and are transmitted by predation to the same definitive host may cooperate in their attempts to manipulate the behaviour of the intermediate host, while at the same time having conflicts of interests over the use of host resources. A few studies have indicated that intermediate hosts harbouring larval helminths have altered concentrations of neurotransmitters in their nervous system, and thus measuring levels of neurotransmitters in host brains could serve to assess the respective and combined effect of different helminth species on host behaviour. Here, we investigate potential cooperation and conflict among three helminths in two species of crab intermediate hosts. The acanthocephalan Profilicollis spp., the trematode Maritrema sp. and an acuariid nematode, all use Macrophthalmus hirtipes (Ocypodidae) as intermediate host, whereas Profilicollis and Maritrema also use Hemigrapsus crenulatus (Grapsidae). All three helminths mature inside gulls or other shore birds. There was a significant decrease in the mean volume of Profilicollis cystacanths as the intensity of infection by this parasite increased in H. crenulatus, the only host in which this was investigated; however, there was no measurable effect of other helminth species on the size of acanthocephalans, suggesting no interspecific conflict over resource use within crabs. -

C. strumosum is a polymorphous species which comprises two large groups of populations: the Western Arctic and the Arctic Pacific. The spatial and age-sex structure of the two groups of populations has been analyzed. -

Some aspects of previous descriptions of B. capitatum have been incomplete, particularly with char- acteristics of the hooks of the proboscis being poorly denned. Females of B. capitatum were found to have 16- 18 longitudinal rows of hooks with either 7-8 or 8-9 hooks in each row. The largest hooks with strongly curved blades were apical to median (overall range 69-122 mm long), whereas the basal hooks were spinelike (68-91 /j.m long). The basal hooks had a unique transverse orientation of the roots, an attribute apparently shared only with B. physeteris Gubanov, 1952, among the 14 species of Bolbosoma from cetaceans and pinnipeds. Although Bolbosoma capitatum had apparently been reported from Physeter macrocephalus in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, none of these records could be substantiated. The current report constitutes a new geographic record (Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada) and the first account of this parasite in sperm whales from North American waters. -

Lower parasite infection levels in introduced versus native populations have been well documented. However, any potential competitive advantage will depend on whether native competitors exhibit higher parasite loads than introduced hosts and whether native hosts suffer more (e.g., reduced reproduction or growth) from parasite infections than introduced hosts.
