TECUMSEH HIGH SCHOOL SINGERS SELECTED FOR STATE HONORS CHOIR — Six high school choir members will represent Tecumseh High School at the State Honors Choir at the annual Michigan Music Conference January 24-26. Raven Carson, Nadia Kelham, Elizabeth Lacasse, Hannah Rowe, Veda Massanari-Thatcher and Isaac Thomp- son will rehearse and perform with other top musicians from across the state at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel and Devos Hall in Grand Rapids, Mich. Each participated in the Michigan School Vocal Music Association Region B Honors Choir where they had the opportunity to work with master teachers to prepare seven college-level pieces of music for an evening performance December 1 at Western Michigan University. As a part of the day’s events, each took part in a rigorous audition process to earn a spot in the State Honors Choir. Auditions required learners to perform a memorized piece of music without accompaniment before a judge, and sight-read a new piece of music to test for music lit- eracy skill. NEWS ReTree Tecumseh aims to renew city’s tree population By JACKIE KOCH [email protected]

As a frequent traveler on North Evans Street, Tecumseh resident Cheri Hinkleman noticed the aging crabapple trees lining both sides of the street and felt sadness at the state of the once-beautiful specimens. She started thinking about how the trees could be replaced. “I knew the city didn’t have the funds to start a tree program again at the moment, so I talked to different people and asked Jack Baker, the mayor, if the city would go along with a program if we could raise the money for the trees,” she said. Her next steps eventually led to the formation of ReTree Tecumseh, a group that plans to work toward renewing the city’s tree population. After talking to Parks and Recreation Director Shelly Lim, Hinkleman connect with ReLeaf Michigan, an organization that has worked since 1988 to educate the public on the value of trees and how to properly select, plant, and maintain them. Hinkelman took steps to gather a group of like-minded individuals who were dedicated to “re-treeing” the city. “I started talking to some different people about it and I got a lot of support and gathered together a group of people I thought would be helpful and dedicated to the project, and that’s how it got started,” she said, noting that there are now nine people on the committee with others interested in volunteering, as well, including some Master Gardeners. Cooperation from the city was a crucial part of the effort, with Hinkleman garnering the support of Baker and City Manager Dan Swallow. She said the city did not want to prune the younger, healthy trees that are to be left standing at that PHOTO BY JACKIE KOCH location, but will cut down the almost 50 that were chosen to be The first priority for ReTree Tecumseh will be to replace crabapple trees along North Evans Street. replaced, will dig holes to plant the new trees, and will provide mulch and water to maintain them. Volunteers will be needed once it is time to prune existing trees and plant new ones. One of the people on the committee is Jack Wikle, Hidden Lake Gardens’ first education specialist and a longtime tree expert, who will advise the group on tree maintenance. “Sometime during this winter and early spring we hope to get the existing trees that aren’t going to be cut, pruned, so that will make them healthier, too,” said Hinkleman. The first stretch of Tecumseh to be re-treed is the west side of North Evans Street, from Burt Street to Red Mill Drive. “When we get those trees planted, we’ll do the east side, also, before we move on to another area,” she said. It’s not definite how many will be planted in the first year, so replacing trees on North Evans Street may be a two- or three-year project, depending on funding. Hinkleman and her fellow committee members have applied for assistance from ReLeaf Michigan to obtain some trees with up to 50 percent of the cost contributed by the organization. ReLeaf will also help the Tecumseh group apply for grants through Consumers Energy, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, and various other entities, and she said they will also look for local grants for which to apply. Each tree will cost approximately $200. A public funding campaign will be launched after the start of the new year to allow contributions from anyone who wants to be part of the tree planting program. The committee has arranged with the city to have a special account so that contributors can write checks to the City of Tecumseh and specify the funds for ReTree Tecumseh, as approved unanimously by Tecumseh City Council Monday evening. The group is in the process of having a banner created, to be put up in the vicinity of the AJ Smith Recreation Center, that will bring attention to the Evans Street tree project and ReTree Tecumseh. According to ReLeaf Michigan, 100 trees, the goal of ReTree Tecumseh’s first planting project, remove 53 tons of carbon dioxide and 430 pounds of other pollutants every year. Trees also improve water quality by filtering pollutants, stabilizing soils, absorbing rainwater and reducing erosion; support biodiversity by providing food, shelter and habitat for wildlife; reduce noise pollution; reduce energy usage by providing shade; and provide many other benefits to a community. ReLeaf Michigan has worked with more than 400 communities across the state, and with community volunteers has planted nearly 30,000 trees on public property in Michigan’s cities, townships, and villages. Anyone interested in more information on ReTree Tecumseh may contact Hinkleman at 423.5906 or chinkleman@comcast. net.
