2 Athletics Year-in-Review 2012-2013

Fall Sports Season Cheerleading This season’s varsity football cheer squad supported the varsity football team at almost every game this season—home and away. Whether winning or losing, the girls never gave up hope or school spirit. The homecoming pep rally was a success with the girls performing stunts and routines that far exceeded any expectations for this season. Cross Country The 2012 Cross Country season has been one filled with success, accomplishment, and celebration. The ladies’ team, in spite of losing their top two runners from last year to graduation and transfer, ran a winning season of 8 wins and only 1 loss. Sophomore Amanda Baker stepped up to the number one runner position throughout the regular season, until a leg injury ended her season early. In spite of that loss, the Lady Lions won their eighth straight district championship, and finished third in the regional meet. The men’s team showed significant improvement from 2011, with the transfer to WA of Junior Brandon Bejarano, and the return to running health of sophomore Casey McCracken. Brandon won the 2012 Individual Conference Championship, while Casey won the District Individual crown. With senior team captain David King following, the Lions won the WA Invitational, the Conference Championships, and also won their second straight district and regional championships, and capped a 10th place finish in the state championships. Football The Lions’ Varsity Football team finished up their season with a thrilling 29-22 overtime victory over Coral Springs Charter. The win evened the Lions’ record up at 5-5 for the season, and was the fourth consecutive victory. The 2012 football season was filled with copious lessons and the team all learned a little bit about each other and themselves. To end on a four-game winning streak was phenomenal. All credit goes to every player and coach for their commitment to coming to work each day with a purpose and a plan. The team could have packed it up with a record of 1-5, but instead of getting down, they got determined. It is a tremendous credit to the boys, especially the seniors, for their endurance and decision to turn their season around. Senior QB Ray Sharp led the way this season, amassing nearly 1,800 yards passing and throwing 19 TD’s (touchdowns). Junior Spencer Saliba led the Lions’ ground attack, rushing 144 times for 855 yards and scoring 6 TD’s. Sophomore WR (wide receiver)Andrew James caught 32 passes for 612 yards and scored six TD’s in only five games of action at WR. SeniorJonathan Merkle led the team in tackles on the defensive side of the ball, collecting 63 tackles . Finally, senior Ryan Rickel was the outstanding special teams player this season for the Lions. Rickel booted nine kickoffs for touchbacks, averaged 44 yards on 32 punts, was 16 of 17 on extra points and connected on six field goals.

3 Finally, the Southeastern Football Conference selected offenseive lineman Daniel Cocconcelli, quarterback Ray Sharp, and place kicker Ryan Rickel to its inaugural All-Conference Team. In addition, senior Max Bevill was selected to their All-Academic Team. Golf The 2012 Varsity Golf team has a successful season as they played in one of the toughest districts in the state. The team had a great start having won the first annual Westminster Academy/Calvary Christian Cup. They also finished fourth in the district and had two individual qualifiers for Regional play:Steven Lamay (11) and Ashley Malinchak (11). Malinchak advanced to the State tournament for the 6th consecutive year. The team’s overall record this season was 9-5. Head coach Jack Fleck looks forward to a promising season next year with the chance to compete in the well- respected district. Swimming and Diving This year’s swimming and diving teams outperformed expectations. Although this team is the youngest one in over a decade, they are deep in talent. The women’s team finished with an 11-2 dual meet record-which was highlighted by wins over Gulliver, Cardinal Gibbons, and South Florida Heat. The ladies also captured the Florida Christian Schools Championship and finished third at the 1A-District 10 meet. Sophomore Caroline Nava continued her already stellar career wth a district championship in the 50 and 100 freestyle and a regional championship in the 50 freestyle. At states, she finished second in the 50 freestye with an All-American consideration time. She also had an All-American qualifying time in the 100 free and finished 5th. Younger sisterJessica Nava just missed the school record in the 100 butterfly, but still made the District and Regional finals and also qualified for the state championship meet where she set a school record in the 100 fly and finished 11th. At the state championships in Orlando, the women’s swimming team rewrote much of the school record book while finishing 7th place as a team. The 200 medley relay set the first new school record of the night and finished 12th; the 200 freestyle relay shattered the old record in route to a bronze medal and an All-American consideration time and the 400 freestyle relay finally took down the oldest record on the board. The old record of 3:39.43 had stood since 1981 and included WA swim parent Kim Nava. The girls shattered the record with a time of 3:36.28 while finishing 9th. The Women’s relay swimmmers included Ashley Alfaro, Caroline Israels, Amy Kranz, Caroline Nava, Jessica Nava, Alexa Rivera, and Elizabeth Zubero. The men’s team finished with a 9-4 record despite losing two of the program’s all-time top swimmers. This included an exciting one-point victory at the Florida Christian School Championship which came down to the last relay of the meet. The men took fourth at the 1A-District 10 meet. Sophomore Alex Warters was a district and regional finalist. He also qualified for his third consecutve state championship meet where he had a great meet and scored points at the state level for the first time, finishing in 16th place.

4 The men also finished off their season on a high note. The 200 medley relay ofMicah Smith, Nicolas Shyne, and Jason Woodburn with Charlie Clemons and Daniel Zubero splitting the freestyle duties, had a season best time and finished 15th. With such a young team, the majority of whom are 7th to 10th graders, the future of our Westminster Swimming and Diving team is very bright. Volleyball This season was a successful one for the Varsity volleyball team, despite what the record shows. The team was a mix of 8th through 12th graders who came and evolved into a strong unit. Though a tough season on paper, the girls continued to work hard each day and learned how to persevere. The team will lose five seniors to graduation:Melissa Coningsby, Caroline Israels, Ashley Roughen, Georgia Smith, and Alyssa Stevenson. This group of seniors did a great job mentoring the younger players during the season. They were a valuable asset to the team not only because of their skill, but also for their Christ-like attitudes and leadership. Even with the upcoming loss of five seniors, the program looks strong for next season. Many young players are moving up with the talent and dedication needed to continue a strong tradition of volleyball here at Westminster Academy.

5 Winter Sports Season

Cheerleading The 2012-2013 Varsity Cheer squad had an excellent winter basketball season! They enjoyed cheering on the Varsity Men’s Basketball team, in addition to competing themselves. They competed at The Ultimate State Bash Competition at Florida Atlantic University on January 12. The ladies hard work and energy paid off as they placed first in the Varsity Medium, Non-Tumbling Division. They are now looking forward to try- outs in May, team camp this summer and picking up their competition schedule in the fall.

Ladies’ Basketball The ladies’ varsity basketball team had a successful season. The girls improved throughout the year and ended with an exciting win against Pope John Paul II. The team will lose one senior to graduation, Kaitlyn Stolley, who will be missed, but the future is bright with a young and upcoming group of athletes. Sophomore Brooke Oman and freshman Katie Ferraguti, two of the team’s leading scorers, will be back along with a determined and dedicated group of freshman consisting of: Savannah Kelmanson, Sofia Mastrorio, Maddie Pilch, Abby Quirk, Lia Raby, and Emma Zatorski and 8th graders Savannah Alday and Ali Sampo. We look forward to see what God has in store for the ladies’ varsity baketball program here at Westminster Academy. Men’s Basketball The 2012-2013 Varsity Men’s Basketball team finished another successful season with a record of 19 wins and 7 losses. The players were instrumental in helping to achieve goals and do great things. They competed at the highest level, playing the toughest schedule possible with wins against 8A schools such as Nova High School and Flanagan. More big wins came against 6A and 7A schools- Armwood, Bloomingdale, Miami-Killian, Fort Lauderdale and West Boca High School. Two of their seven loses were against the class 3A State runner-up, Coral Springs Christian, and the 2A State Champion, Grandview Preparatory. The season was filled with memorable moments and great lessons learned. In life, adversity is always a challenge, and as a team they focused on how God wants us to handle these difficulties. The team learned and practiced this year that God is in complete control and no problem is too big or too small and to always put our trust in Him to see us through. The blessings that were witnessed and the bonds that were made contributed to the success of this years team, and our seniors were a huge part of that. Daniel Cocconcelli, Paul Fisher, Kevin Kroll, Daniel Osley, and David Osley were instrumental in helping the team grow as Christian men and they will be greatly missed. Junior Josh Floyd led the team in scoring with 18.1 ppg (points per game), while his averaged increased to 4.8 per game. Daniel Osley led the team in dunks and was steady at 16.1 ppg. Daniel Cocconcelli, Nicholas Rosa, and Chris Barbar did a great job working together while averaging 29.4 ppg and 18.3 rebounds per game. Andrew

6 Boynton, Kevin Kroll, and Bryce Harrold led the way shooting 44% from the 3 point arc. Andrew Boynton came into his own as the starting point guard and was pivotal in the team’s success. Kevin Kroll also came through with some huge shooting games. All in all, every member of the team played a crucial role in making this season a huge success and the future looks promising for the Men’s basketball program. Ladies’ Soccer The 2012-2013 Lady Lions Varsity Soccer team had a wonderful year reaching the District finals and also competing in the Regional semifinals with a young group of players. The team’s lone senior, Alex Hall, played an excellent defense/mid field all season. The team will miss her greatly. In addition, both the defense and offense had a strong season with their hard work and effort. The team’s performance throughout the season was strong and consistent. The future looks bright for the Ladies’ soccer program with many returners and a big group of upcoming talent. Men’s Soccer The Varsity Men’s soccer team went above and beyond expectations this season. What was expected to be a rebuilding year, turned into a talented group of freshman and upperclassman that stepped up to the occasion. The talent that developed throughout the season led to many great victories, which will continue to lead us to a bright future. The future looks very promising with five talented freshmen that joined the team this season, and juniors that will lead the team to accomplish great things for God’s glory. The team made it to the District semifinals this season and played at a high level tactically and technically. There is hope that the team will be District favorites next season. The soccer program is in high gear during the off-season and summer. Two teams participated in a 5v5 tournament at Nova Southeastern University in April. In addition, on June 17-21 we will be hosting the worldwide known AC Milan Junior Camp, with coaches coming in from Milan, Italy. Select players will also be participating in the AC Milan Florida Cup in Orlando playing against teams from across the nation and the world. God is developing our soccer players into great athletes on and off the field. Each year the motto, “More Than a Team” is lived out in our athletes lives. All in all, it was a great season for the coaching staff, parents, and players of the WA Varsity Men’s Soccer program. Soli Deo Gloria!

7 Spring Sports Season Baseball The WA Baseball Lions capped off another solid baseball season with a 2-0 victory in the District Quarterfinals over the Sagemont School. SeniorBlake Kidwell, in his final high school start, threw a complete game no-hitter while senior Daniel D’Onofrio paced the Lions at the plate going 2-3, driving in both of the team’s runs. The Lions then lost a heartbreaker to Coral Springs Christian in the semi-finals 8-5, bringing their season to a close. On the season, there were several standout performances. Junior left-hander Weston Clemente paced the Lions on the mound all season, finishing in the top in all of Broward County in innings pitched, , pick-offs, and runs batted in at the plate. Senior Daniel D’Onofrio led the Lions with a .367 batting average, and was recently voted to the June 1 Broward County Senior All-Star game. Another high point of the year was when senior Zach Gonzalez a blast over the wall for the furthest home of the season against American Prep. The Lions as a team, had several golden moments as well. They defeated local rival Cardinal Gibbons in a 1-0 11-inning pitching duel, and also finished runner-up in the 2013 Westminster Academy National Classic. In all, the Lions graduate 3 stellar young men, in Daniel D’Onofrio, Zach Gonzalez, and Blake Kidwell, but return a solid core players and look forward to competing for a district title in 2014. Rowing The Westminster Academy Rowing program is unique in the sense that it competes in all three seasons throughout the school year. The fall season consisted of an abundance of endurance training. The rowers practiced lengthy rows after school in preparation for their 5,000 meter regattas that took place in the fall. This 2012 fall season consisted of two races: The Head of Indian Creek and the Head of the Giblet. The greatest success of the fall was 8th grader Alex Berry and freshman Kenny Rondino placing 3rd in the Men’s at the Head of the Giblet. With the smooth transition of new head coach, Hilary Cumbest, the rowers hopped right back into training once they returned from their winter break. The team practiced many afternoons in the weight room and on the rowing machines. The lone competition in the winter, the Indoor Southern Sprints, included 1,187 athletes from the state of Florida. The athletes competed against each other on the indoor rowing machines in different categories. WA took 17 athletes who participated where 8th grader Jackson Moore had the standout performance of the day finishing 6th of out 49 middle school boys. Next, the spring season was focused on training for short distances to help prepare the team for the five regattas that were raced in. Two of the five spring races went exceptionally well for the Lion rowers. The team took home a silver and three bronze medals at the Miami International Regatta which consisted of 20 teams from three states and four countries.

8 In addition, four WA rowers were selected to race at the Sculling States Championship that took place in mid April in Sarasota, Florida. The states championship consisted of 175 entries, 34 club teams from 23 different cities in Florida. Seniors Amanda Grimme and Rebekah Fitzgibbon raced together in the Women’s Varsity Double event and missed their finals by seconds.Morgen Brohman and Zach Allsworth raced in the lightweight men’s double event and with much excitement, the duo won the C final. These young lion rowers were up against seniors and juniors and raced with great maturity and skill. Both of the WA rowing coaches, Coach Cumbest and Coach Lyttle, are sad the season has come to a close, however they are optimistic about the future of the WA Rowing program. Softball The Lady Lions’ Softball team had a great season despite a few curve balls they were thrown along the way. Having lost five seniors to graduation last year, the young team rose to the occasion and were all key contributors. This was the strongest offensive team in the last four seasons for the Lady Lions with a team batting average of .358. They also nearly doubled their team totals from seasons past in extra base hits. The ladies’ finished their season with a tough-luck 4-3 loss against their district rival Calvary. The team put up a good fight and turned a lot of heads towards the end of their season with the overall improvement made. Senior captains Olivia Fuhr and Brooke Zolnowski ended their high school softball careers in strong fashion with their consistency, dedication and leadership. The team was led offensively this season by 6th grader Chelsea Brown and sophomore Brantley Taylor. Brown led the team with a .607 batting average, 7 triples, and 32 runs scored. Taylor held the fort down well at the clean up spot finishing with a .517 batting average, while leading the team in doubles with 11 and a team high 29 RBI. Taylor also was behind the plate in every inning of the Lions’ 19 games and did an outstanding job as the defensive leader. Jensen Strandberg, Alex Pagliaro and Erika Hall all handled the duties on the mound. Strandberg took on the role as the ace of the pitching staff, collecting 6 of the team’s 9 victories. Three of her losses were close, one-run battles that just didn’t end in the Lady Lion’s favor. Defensively, Alex Pagliaro and Vanessa Burnam did a solid job in the middle infield with their range and consistency. Laura Peed and Chelsea Brown held the corner spots down well with their clutch and heads up plays. Kiersten Casey, Olivia Fuhr, Veronica Fulton, Micaela Von Essen and Brooke Zolnowski all covered their ground well in the . Due to their judgement and speed, they came up with some game- changing plays that made a huge difference. Coach Casey Jarvis is optimistic about the strong senior class for next season and the young solid group of returners and new talent moving up will make for a promising next few years for the WA softball program.

9 Tennis The varsity tennis team has finished strong with the men’s and ladies’ winning their last two matches. Both teams recently completed the District tournament with the men’s team finishing a close 4th, and the ladies’ placing 2nd for the first time! The men’s team was led by David Carter and Jax Harbour who made it to the finals at #2 and #3 positions. The ladies’ were led by Courtney Meredith, Cayla Coningsby, Lauren Klinge, and doubles team Maggie Helmholdt and Christina Calhoun who all made it to the finals. Courtney and Cayla managed to walk away as District Winners. The girls qualified for Regionals, and Courtney qualified to play at States, which is a first for the WA tennis program. While the team did not advance past the Regionals, Courtney played and won the State 1A Individuals tournament and was beaten in the State 1A Overall title. Congratulations to Courtney! The only graduating senior Maggie Helmholdt shared great leadership. All in all, over 35 players participated in the teams this year with lots of fun and great improvement. The coaches saw tremendous improvements in the players and great camaraderie. Track & Field This 2013 season has been very rewarding for the track and field program. The young ladies’ and men have truly developd and have gotten stronger and faster, day by day. They have worked so hard on their accomplishments and have praised our Lord, who has blessed the team every step of way. The ladies’ team compiled a record of 8-4 on the season and finished 42nd out of 50 schools at the FHSAA 1A State Finals. They were also the Regional 4-1A and District 15- 1A runner-ups. He also set a new school record in the 200m with a time of 21.51 and received the State Runner-up. This young lady is very talented and the team looks forward to watching her run and compete for the Lions next season. Also, 8th grader Kasey Colford set a new middle school record in the Discus of 91’3” and Brandon Bejarano broke a 28 year school record, setting the new 800m school record of 1:58.66.
