This and That

New Home: The Edmonton Oil Kings will play their entire 12-game home schedule at the Downtown Community Arena for the 2020-2021 WHL season. While the team usually just plays a pre-season game or two a year at the DCA, they’re very familiar with their new confines as they have used the facility for the bulk of their practices since the team moved from Rexall Place to Rogers Place in 2016. The Oil Kings are 2-2-1-0 all-time in pre-season games played at the DCA and 4-0-0-0 in the regular season.

Players of the Week: The Edmonton Oil Kings have had a pair of players win the WHL’s Journie Rewards Player of the Week Award this season. Dylan Guenther earned the honor for the first week of the season registering 4 goals and 4 assists in two games against the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Jalen Luypen would follow that up by winning the award in week two putting up two goals and an assist against the Medicine Hat Tigers. Prior to Guenther winning the award, the Oil Kings had not had a Player of the Week winner since Edgars Kulda from May of 2014. Sebastian Cossa was named the WHL’s Goaltender of the Week for the first week of the season after going 2-0-0-0 with a 1.50gaa and a .935sv% against the Lethbridge Hurricanes, it was the second time in his career he was named the WHL’s Goaltender of the Week.

Block Party in the STL: On October 6th, 2020 the St. Louis Blues used their first-round selection at the NHL Draft to select Edmonton Oil Kings forward Jake Neighbours with the 26th overall pick. By being selected in the first round, Neighbours became the 19th Oil King in modern franchise history to be selected in the NHL Draft and became the first Oil King since Curtis Lazar in 2013 to be taken in the first round.

A-OK: The Edmonton Oil Kings have a pair of ‘A’ rated prospects ahead of this year’s NHL Draft in forward Dylan Guenther and goaltender Sebastian Cossa. An ‘A’ rating from NHL Central Scouting indicates the player is likely to selected in the first-round.

Scotty Ace: Forward Scott Atkinson will serve as the team’s captain for a second consecutive year, joining Mark Pysyk (2010-2012) and Griffin Reinhart (2012-2014) as the only multi-year captains in franchise history. He is the 13th captain in modern franchise history.

Rookie Record Setters: Last season Dylan Guenther set new franchise records for both goals (26) and points (59) by a rookie skater surpassing the previous records established by Trey Fix-Wolansky (24 goals) and Martin Gernat (55 points). Meanwhile, between the pipes Sebastian Cossa set new franchise marks for Wins (21) and Shutouts (4) by a rookie goaltender surpassing the previous records established by Laurent Brossoit (13 wins) and Tyler Santos (3 shutouts).

First Time for Everything: Last season Edmonton Oil Kings head coach Brad Lauer was named the WHL’s winner of the of the Dunc McCallum Memorial Trophy as the league’s Coach of the Year making him the first Oil Kings coach to earn the honor. Lauer wasn’t the only Oil King to win an award last year as Dylan Guenther was named the league’s Top Rookie winning the Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy, which was also a first for the franchise.

Cap Climbing: Edmonton Oil Kings defenceman Ethan Cap is in his fifth-season in the WHL having spent his entire career with the Oil Kings after the team selected him 11th overall in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft. Entering this season, he has amassed 265 career games payed which sits tied for four all-time with Ashton Sautner (2011-2015). If Cap can stay healthy he will finish his career second all-time in games played trailing only T.J. Foster (338 games). To date, Cap has now played 273 career games, just three behind Keegan Lowe for third all-time.

Worth the Wait: Edmonton Oil Kings overage forward Kaid Oliver made his Oil Kings debut on February 26, 2021 after being acquired by the team 312 days prior in a trade with the Victoria Royals. Oliver spent his entire WHL career with the Royals before being acquired by the Oil Kings, in 234 career games he has 57 goals and 71 assists prior to this season. He finished fifth in the league last year in Faceoff Percentage winning 709 of 1223 faceoffs (58.0%).

Oil King Bloodlines: Kaid Oliver is not the first member of his family to play for the Edmonton Oil Kings. His grandfather Garnet ‘Ace’ Bailey played for the original Edmonton Oil Kings from 1964-67 appearing 81 games, scoring 61 goals and 64 assists before going onto a lengthy playing (Boston, St. Louis and Washington) and scouting (Edmonton and Los Angeles) career in the NHL. ‘Ace” tragically passed away in the September 11th attacks on the United States.

Hockey Hewards: Rookie Edmonton Oil Kings defenceman Blake Heward has some strong hockey bloodlines. His father Jamie Heward was also a defenceman and played 263 career games in the WHL with the Regina Pats scoring 228 points (78G, 150A). He would go on to play 17 seasons of professional hockey playing 394 career games in the NHL with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Nashville Predators, New York Islanders, Columbus Blue Jackets, Washington Capitals, Los Angeles Kings and Tampa Bay Lightning. Following his playing career, he began his coaching career spending 6 years with the Swift Current Broncos as an assistant coach, 2 years with the Vancouver Giants as an associate coach and is now an assistant coach with the Henderson Silver Knights (AHL).

Peters Footsteps: Rookie Edmonton Oil Kings defenceman Ethan Peters is following in father Jason Peters footsteps playing in the WHL. Jason, also a defenceman, played in the league from 1988-1992 with the Moose Jaw Warriors, Victoria Cougars, Saskatoon Blades and Tri-City Americans. In 137 games he scored two goals and 13 assists.

Hockey Heros: Ethan Cap and Sebastian Cossa have teamed up with Hockey Gives Blood as their local player ambassadors here in Edmonton. Both have made numerous blood donations during their careers in Edmonton. “The Hockey Gives Blood Player Ambassador program comprises young developing hockey players from across Canada who have been recognized by their peers as influential champions. These ambassadors diligently promote the ongoing need for blood, stem cells, organ and tissue donations to help save lives.” Oil Kings assistant coach Luke Pierce is a Director with Hockey Gives Blood.

Gone Camping: While many young hockey players have had a hard time finding ice-time during the COVID-19 Pandemic, the same can’t be said for Edmonton Oil Kings defenceman Matthew Robertson. Starting in late November until now, the New York Rangers prospect has been on the ice a ton starting with Hockey Canada’s World Junior Selection Camp in Red Deer, followed by the New York Rangers training camp, the Hartford Wolf Pack’s (AHL) training camp and finally returning to Edmonton for the Oil Kings abbreviated two-week training camp.

New in Town: The Oil Kings return a large contingent of last year’s team but will feature a quartet of rookies on defence; Matt Smith, Ethan Peters, Blake Heward and Ross Stanley. Joining Kaid Oliver as incoming forwards are a trio of rookies; Carson Latimer, Jayden Henderson and Caleb Reimer. Between the pipes and behind the returning Sebastian Cossa is the rookie duo of Colby Knight and Kolby Hay.

The Departed: Graduating were overagers F Riley Sawchuk, F Ethan McIndoe and G Beck Warm. Traded away were D Jacson Alexander (Victoria), F David Kope (Kelowna), D Wyatt McLeod (Saskatoon) and F Vlad Alistrov (Seattle). Released were F Jesse Seppala, D Loeden Schaufler and D Samuel Stewart.
