- Tonight’s Preview: Kelowna will take on the Giants for the second time this season, in their only other previous meeting Vancouver the Rockets 6-0….Tristen Nielsen put on a clinic, registering three goals and a pair of assists…2005 born Mazden Leslie scored the first and second goals of his WHL career in that game. The Rockets will have a tall order ahead of them as the Giants are second in the BC Division, their power play ranks eleventh in the league while their penalty kill is fourth among all WHL teams. The Rockets have won the last three of their four games, the only loss came to the BC Division leading Blazers on Tuesday night. The Giants are well rested and are ready for the Rockets, they had last night off…their last game was a 5-3 win over Victoria on Wednesday night. Last night, the Rockets took down the 5-1…..Tyson Feist was the games first star with a and an assist on the night.

- Injured reserve: The Rockets have been without forward Ethan Ernst since March 29 after the forward underwent surgery on his wrist…he is listed as out indefinitely. Rookie defenceman Jackson DeSouza joined Ernst on the injury list the week….he’s listed as out day-to-day with a lower body injury.

GAME NOTES – APRIL 24, 2021 GAME #13 VANCOUVER GIANTS AT KELOWNA ROCKETS

THE STORY SO FAR – Heading into tonight’s game the Vancouver Giants are 9-3 and are ranked second in the B.C. Division standings. So far this season the Giants have earned at least one victory against every B.C. Division opponent, and they’ll be looking to secure their fifth straight victory tonight when they take the ice against the Kelowna Rockets for the second time this season.

THE MATCHUP – Tonight the Vancouver Giants and the Kelowna Rockets will clash for the first time since March 28th. The Giants were 6-0 winners that night on the strength of a five-point performance from Tristen Nielsen (3G, 2A) and a 20-save performance from goaltender Trent Miner. Mazden Leslie added a pair of goals and Adam Hall also scored in what was the first victory of the season for the Giants. In the past five seasons the Giants have gone 15-4-3-2 against Kelowna.

LAST GAME – The Vancouver Giants captured their fourth straight victory on Wednesday night when they defeated the by a 5-3 score. Justin Sourdif (1G, 2A) and Alex Kannok Leipert (1G, 2A) both had three-point games for Vancouver while Zack Ostapchuk and Eric Florchuk both added a goal and an assist. Drew Sim was the goaltender of record for the Giants, turning aside 17 of the 20 shots fired his way to earn the victory. The power play went three-for-nine while the penalty kill went three-for-five. It marked the fourth straight victory of the season for Vancouver against Victoria.

GAME NOTES – APRIL 24, 2021 GAME #13 VANCOUVER GIANTS AT KELOWNA ROCKETS

SOURDIF DRAFTED BY PANTHERS – On October 7th, 2020 Giants forward Justin Sourdif was drafted by the in Round 3 (87th Overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft. Sourdif, a product of Surrey, B.C. was originally selected third overall by the Giants in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft. Since then he’s appeared in 137 career regular season games with the Giants and has compiled 54 goals and 67 assists for 121 points along with 96 penalty minutes and a +65 rating. Additionally, Sourdif has suited up in 24 playoff games with Vancouver. Justin Sourdif is the second Giant to ever be selected by the Florida Panthers and is the 33rd Giants player to ever be drafted to the . The other Giant selected by Florida was Michal Repik in 2007. He is the 21st Giants forward to ever be drafted to the NHL. The Vancouver Giants have now had at least one player drafted in 16 of the past 19 years.

MINER SHINES IN THE AHL – Before returning to the Vancouver Giants to start the 2020-21 season, 2001-born goaltender Trent Miner got his first taste of pro hockey when he signed an Amateur Tryout Agreement with the AHL’s . Miner, a seventh-round pick of the from 2019 appeared in five games with the Eagles, posting a 2-3-1 record with a 2.86 goals-against-average, a .906 save percentage and one shutout. He’s 6-2 so far this season and has four shutouts which leads the league. His 1.18 goals-against average and .952 save percentage are also both tops in the WHL.

OSTAPCHUK ON THE RADAR – 2003-born forward Zack Ostapchuk is the next Giant hoping to hear his name called at the NHL Draft. The product of St. Albert, AB is entering his second season with the Giants after posting five goals and three assists for eight points in 44 games last season. He was originally selected 10th overall by the Giants in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft. In January, Ostapchuk was one of 36 WHL players to crack NHL Central Scouting’s Preliminary Players to Watch List. So far this season, Zack Ostapchuk has four goals and six assists for 10 points in 12 games.

MICHAEL DYCK EARNS SILVER AT 2021 WORLD JUNIORS – Vancouver Giants head coach Michael Dyck served as an assistant coach with at the 2021 IIHF World Juniors which took place in Edmonton, AB. Despite a dominant performance from Canada through much of the tournament, they dropped the Gold Medal game to the United States by a 2-0 score on January 5th. Vancouver Giants alumnus was also a part of Canada’s World Junior team. Giants defenceman Marko Stacha also competed in the tournament for a second straight year as a representative of Slovakia.

GIANTS ADD KEITH McCAMBRIDGE TO COACHING STAFF – On November 13, 2020 the Vancouver Giants hired Keith McCambridge as their new associate coach. Keith McCambridge joins the Giants after spending 10 seasons coaching in the . During his AHL tenure, he served as head coach of the (2017-2019), The (2015-16) and the St. John’s IceCaps (2011-2015). Additionally, he spent six seasons with the ECHL’s Alaska Aces where he served as a head coach (2007-2009), an assistant coach (2006-07) and a player/coach (2003-2006).
