Mark Barnsley B.Sc. Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba

Overview: The main focus of my teaching is to help to instil a lifelong love of music in each student. This is the basis for success as a performer and a balanced life. I am happy to guide students through examinations but don’t believe this is the only way to approach music. I try to ensure that my students receive a comprehensive experience, learning to play and recognise many different styles and appreciate the musicality and approach needed to conquer each style. While I encourage all my students to practise daily I also understand that music will not be every student’s top priority and tailor my teaching methods and expectations to suit the commitment levels of each student. I do, however, expect all students to put in a reasonable effort as a minimum.

Teaching Experience: January 2003– present Private Music Tutor, Pymble Ladies’ College.

Responsibilities:  Provide one-on-one tuition.  Delivers instrumental and aural tuition.  Inspire, motivate and educate.

Additional Teaching Experience: Mark has been heavily involved in music education in Sydney since 1993, conducting both concert and stage bands in many primary and secondary schools and teaching trombone, euphonium and tuba in some of Sydney’s most prestigious schools (Pymble Ladies College, Barker College, St Ignatius) and privately in his own studio.

His bands have been recognized at the highest levels with invitations to perform at the Opera House, School Spectacular, multiple bands being awarded Command Performances at the Yamaha Festival and winning multiple State Band Championships. Mark is also in demand as a clinician, running masterclasses and workshops with other school bands.

Currently Mark directs ensembles at Wahroonga Public School, Turramurra High School and Abbotsleigh and teaches lower brass at Pymble Ladies College. Over the years Mark has had many of his students follow on from their school studies to become successful professional trombonists, teachers and conductors.

Performance Experience: Mark Barnsley is one of Sydney's first call jazz and commercial trombonists performing with such international artists as… Michael Buble, Tim Minchin, Frankie Valli, Jerry Lewis, Brian May and Roger Taylor (Queen) and has supported the Rolling Stones on tour in Hong Kong. In Australia he has performed and/or recorded with Marcia Hines, Tina Arena, Human Nature, Jessica Mauboy, Kate Ceberano, Glenn Shorrock, Jimmy Barnes, David Campbell, Tom Burlinson, Australian Idol, Guy Sebastian, Doug Parkinson, Jon Stevens, Paulini, James Morrison, Caroline O'Connor, Don Burrows, Emma Pask, Jeff Duff, Wayne Bergeron and Bobby Shew to name a few.

Mark has also performed on many national television shows, movie soundtracks and jingles as well as the professional theatre show productions of Dirty Dancing, Floorplay, Priscilla Queen Of The Desert, Chicago, West Side Story, Mary Poppins and Annie.
