Out of these 926 monitoring stations, 540 (58%) were found to be clean, 278 (30%) slightly polluted and 108 (12%) polluted (Table 4(a), (b) and (c)). Stations located upstream were generally clean, while those downstream were either slightly polluted or polluted. Continuous monitoring is vital for early detection of pollution influx. Over the years, a number of pollution incidences have been observed at many of the continuous monitoring stations.
