SJ Blues Cricket Club Newsletter SJ Blues Cricket Club Newsletter February Club News . 20 10 Merv Hughes night Senior Training Saturday January 30th saw a large crowd gather at the Briggs Park Headquarters Tues & Thursday of the SJ Blues to hear one of Australia’s true legends of the game, Mervyn 5.00 – 6.30pm Hughes, entertain us with tales of his past cricketing exploits and candid comments on the future of the game. Junior Training U16/17 Throughout the entire evening national cricket selector, Merv, remained a Mon & Thur 5.00-6.30 U13 & U14 picture of decorum and charm and was a model for those junior cricketers Tues 4.30 – 6.00pm present at the evening to follow. It was pleasing to see that the future of our U11 & U12 Wed 4.30 – 6.00pm national team is in good hands. An auction of sporting memorabilia was well supported and the evening In2Cricket (5 – 10 yrs) Byford, 5.00 – 6.00pm proved to be a huge success. Our very own “Compare” Sully did a very Commencing Oct 20 professional job in interviewing Merv which was by no means an easy task. Serpentine, 5.00 – 6.00 Commencing Oct 22 A special thanks to Matt Hillyard and Dean Fulford who organized the night, James (Sully) Sullivan MC, Brett & Raylene Lawrence and Raylenes Mum who did a sterling job in the kitchen, to the bar staff, to the person who kept our Grounds invited guest supplied with the odd beer and to Patto for going to the pub Briggs Park twice because we ran out of some beers! Mead St, Byford It was great to see juniors and their families there also enjoying the evening. Following complaints from visiting teams and the danger hazards posed by the poor, uneven surface at Serpentine Oval and Briggs Park the decision has been made to relocate all remaining junior fixtures from these two venies to grounds in the Rockingham area. This follows the same action that has been taken for junior fixtures that have been moved from Mundijong Oval also to grounds in the Rockingham area. A recent meeting between the Senior and Junior football clubs, SJCC, Shire staff and Councillors was held at the Centrals clubrooms. The Shire have undertaken to have the grounds ready for the Football season which, to some people, seems highly unlikely. Over the years many people have complained about the state of our sporting grounds and how poorly the Shire maintains them compared to all of the other Shires or Councils in the area. The time has come to stop putting up with this and do something about it!! We can all do our bit. If you personally know a council member tell them about the poor state of the grounds, write a letter to your local member (who was also present at the meeting), write a letter to the local papers but don’t just sit there and whinge about it. Do something. We may well lose players to other clubs next season. Briggs Park, Feb 12, 2010 Senior News Player Availabilty & Finals There has been an improvement of players particularly since the Christmas period. Everyone that has been involved in improving the player depth should be congratulated on their efforts for bringing new faces into our club however we still welcome any new players even in the later stages of the season. There is a whiteboard in the club with dates marked for players to write their names down if they are unavailable on a given date. This has been working well but in the last month this has dropped off and we Page | 2 need to continue this procedure to ensure the picking of teams is made as easy as possible. This reduces time and calls made to players on selection nights to confirm your availability. So if you know of any cricketers not matter how skilled they are and that are keen for a game please contact Brad Chalmers on 9458 6400 (WK) or 0405 253303 Or alternatively contact the club on 9526 2211 or email your interest to the club at [email protected] Finals With the end of the season fast approaching and finals beginning on March 13th it is important that all players make an effort to attend training as much as possible on Tuesday & Thursday nights. All three grades have a chance to make the finals with one team, One Day D grade, appearing certain to play finals at this stage. FEES: For all players who will be playing finals, you will need to have paid fees or at least begin paying some of your fees to be eligible for finals matches. Please see Rory Murphy to make your payments. Amnesty – Bowling Machine Balls So far this season 20 bowling machine balls have gone missing. These cost $12 each which has resulted in a loss of $240 to the club. When using the bowling machine can you all please ensure that all of the balls are collected at the end of the training session including those that have been hit out of the nets. Some of these may have landed accidentally in your gear bag, if so please check and return them. If you have flogged any please return these immediately and there will be no questions asked!! Results & Summary 2nd Grade Round 10 (One day Game): SJ Blues 8/183 (D Babich 86, T Lindsay 18 V’s Kwinana 9/184 (B Oldroyd 3/32, M Falkingham 2/32) A very tight contest all day with SJ Blues losing on the last ball of the match which cost the SJ boys a spot in the one day grand final which was won by Kwinana. The 2nd grade had a good one day series losing 2 of its seven matches and narrowly missing the final. Round 11 ( Two Day Game): Kwinana 165 (M Fisher 4/35 , M Falkingham 3/27 V’s SJ Blues 101 (B Chalmers 61* T Lindsay 9) A disappointing loss for the top side but well done to Matt Fisher & Michael Falkingham who both bowled well in this match. Round 12 (Two Day Game): Maddington 194 & 5/66 (I Wood 4/39, M Falkingham 2/39 V’s SJ Blues 135 (B Chalmers 39*, D Babich 39) A tough game against a good opponent in Maddington but there were some good signs in the match particularly from 16 year old opening bowler Ian Wood who took 6 wickets for the match and bowled with good control in his spells. Page | 3 Second grade need to win one of their last two matches to be guaranteed a spot in the finals. Attendance at training has been below par and we need to lift this if we are to be a serious threat in the finals this season. 5th Grade Round 10 (One Day Game): SJ Blues 8/242 (D Fulford 63, B Kelly 30*, L Montgomery 29) V’s Riverton Rostrata 161 (R Hicks 3/15, S Baron 3/34) Good to see Dean Fulford find some form with the bat and well done to Ryan Hicks with the ball. Unfortunately fifth grade missed out on the one day final but they played some exciting cricket during the one period and they are on the move up the overall ladder. Round 11 (Two Day Game): SJ Blues 177 (L Montgomery 64, M Paterson 41) V’s Cockburn 119 & 4/109 (A Atwell 4/28, S Baron 2/16, M Kahl 2/31) Well done to the boys beating Cockburn on their home ground and great work by Luke Montgomery & Mark Paterson who shared an 83 run opening partnership to set up the victory. With the ball Aaron Atwell put in another stellar performance taking his 4/28 of 19 over’s. Round 12 (Two Day Game): SJ Blues 124 (B Kelly 25*, P Van Luxemborg 17) V’s Armadale 7/317 (C Hall 5/62) Bad luck to Matt Hillyard and the boys in this game as they were undermanned due to a player shortage in both 5th grade and 2nd grade teams. The lack of depth was evident in this match but to the boys credit they fought out the match as well as possible. Congratulations must go to Clint Hall who took his first 5 wicket hall in this match and it is good to see Clint getting rewards for his continual efforts at training. One Day D Grade: Round 13: SJ Blues 143 (C Atwell 53, B Walkington 25) V’s Cockburn 159 (B Walkington 6/39, S Ninyette 3/15) Well done by Blair Walkington taking 6/39 with the ball and making a solid 25 runs with the bat. Round 14: SJ Blues defeated Canning Districts by forfeit. Round 15: SJ Blues had the bye Round 16: SJ Blues 6/256 (J Harper 69, B Lawrence 48, M Fisher 32* V’s Maddington 115 (M Fisher 3/16, D Seinor 2/4) Great to see a new player this season in Josh making 69 and the veteran Brett Lawrence making sum good runs along with a good all round performance from Matt Fisher not surprising was the fact Fish played a reverse sweep as often as possible. Round 17: SJ Blues 7/195 (R Murphy 120, L Whittington 28, M Whittington 26) V’s Kardinya Lakes 7/241 (B Sparnon 2/29, R Hicks 2/32).

ARTICLE 25 MARCH 29TH. 2013 South Barwon was the “sentimental favourite” last weekend to win its first GCA Division One premiership for 36 years but East-Belmont swept all aside to win its 7th. flag,6/278 to 195 all seven premierships gathered since South Barwon won its last flag in 1975-76. East has a “strike rate” of a premiership every 6.7 seasons since it joined the competition in 1966-67 whilst South’s strike rate with its 5 flags is a premiership every 10.8 seasons, its five flags achieved during its 15 seasons “golden era” between 1961-62 to 1976-77. It was East-Belmont’s 10th straight consecutive win this season and South’s first loss in its last 9 games. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX South Barwon’s loss would have been particularly disappointing for champion batsman, Clinton Peake whose record 8855 runs @ 42.2 at Geelong Cricket Club over 17 seasons failed to deliver a 1st.X1 premiership, his 869 runs @ a commanding 96.6 this season a South Barwon record and the fourth highest in GCA history behind Jack Sing (944 runs @ 118.0 for Geelong West in 1948-49), Len Metherell (928 runs @ 77.3 for Geelong Footballers in 1935-36) and Michael Bowtell (882 runs @ 73.5 for Newtown & Chilwell in 1979-80). XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Andrew Baars , a member of East-Belmont’s last premiership in 2005-06 proved he was a “big occasion player” in that finals series with 55 in that qualifying final, 73 in the semi and the brilliant double of 84 &6/49 in that grand final and did so again in this years grand final with the mixed fortunes of being dismissed for 99.

Michael’s report on the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) camp held recently at Tyalgum Ridge Resort gave us a better idea of the programme and its effectiveness in the lives of the young adult attendees.
