PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Tracy gave us a wonderful insight into her life as an elite athlete in South Africa and the discipline she learned as well as the determination that has led her into businesses at an early age of her own in Wellington as well as on the Gold Coast. We are fortunate to have her as a member of Southport Rotary. We were pleased to welcome as guests Tracy’s Australian mum Margaret Dark and Lambert and Allan’s colleague Friborz Masoori. We hope they will come again.

It was good to get an update from our DGN Michael about the Prince of Peace School in Tanzania showing us the computers we sent in the container last year. The desks that were made locally were very professional looking and funded by a grant from a Rotary Club in Geelong. Michael’s report on the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) camp held recently at Tyalgum Ridge Resort gave us a better idea of the programme and its effectiveness in the lives of the young adult attendees. It is surely one of Rotary’s best youth programmes. If you know of young people in grade 10 who would benefit from the Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN), let David Randall know. This will be held on the weekend of May 22-24 at Bornhoffen in the Numinbah Valley. Southport Rotary can sponsor them.

Don’t forget to sign up for the Polio night movie “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” to be shown at the Gold Coast Arts Centre on Sunday MARCH 1 at 6.30 pm at a cost of $20 each.

Remember the District Conference on April 17-19 in Goondiwindi. We will put in for some of the District Awards- Best Club Bulletin, Rotary-Rotaract involvement and the Best Endeavour Award for our Carousel project. Keep in mind what you can contribute to our hamper for the Silent Auction. We’ll collect items in March.

A celebration of Rotary’s 110th birthday on February 22nd has been put back on the calendar with the Broadbeach and Burleigh Heads Rotary Clubs organizing a sausage sizzle and a cake which the Mayor will cut at 12 noon. This is still at the Eagles Rugby Union ground (Overell Park) on Brighton Pde in Southport from 10 am till 2 pm. Come along if you can. We will have our own Club celebration on February 24. That will be a good time to invite guests.

I will include the list of dates for the Gold Coast Suns’ games where we have the opportunity to sell raffle tickets and see the game. Please check your diaries and we’ll collate this for 3 games next week. The money raised goes into the Suns’ Horizons programme which addresses youth homelessness, domestic violence and the social issues on the northern Gold Coast. Rotary Clubs that sell the tickets get 40 % of the money they make.

Samantha Stackpole from our Southport Rotaract Club is going to on February 18th with a group who are taking part in a NID (National Immunization Day) for polio. She will take some banners from our club to give to other Rotrarians in the group. It will be good to hear about Samantha’s experiences when she returns in March.

I look forward to seeing you next week when we will hear about neural plasticity, which is to do with our hearing. That is sure to be of interest to us all. Partners and guests are always very welcome Marion

SCRIBE’S REPORT 3rd FEBRUARY 2015

Scribes Report for the Rotary Meeting of 10th February 2015 Lea Rickwood, standing in for Tony Stenton, who is being observed in Hospital following chest pain, was the Chair and opened the meeting inviting us all to recite the 4-way Test. Beth Dermody proposed the International Toast to the Rotary Club of Zurich Belvoir, Switzerland. They were Chartered on the 30th May 2007 and is an International Club, conducting their meetings in English. They meet on a Wednesday and alternate between lunch and dinner. Their major fund raiser in 2014 netted 40,000 swiss francs. President Marion welcomed our guests, Margaret in support of Treacy, Jenny Hobart and Friborz Masoori, guest of Lambert. Marion also gave the DG’s Newsletter a plug as it has an article from Tony Pritchard on our Indonesian student sponsorship project. Also encouraged support for the Polio Plus Movie Night at the Gold Coast Arts Centre showing “The Best Marigold Hotel -2” Rotary’s 110th Birthday Celebrations to be held at The James Overell Park on Brighton Street Southport, postponed by District has been picked up by a couple of local Rotary Clubs and will go ahead on Sunday 22nd February. Marion sought expressions of interest by members in the sale of Raffle Tickets at the Suns AFL games that a number of our members have participated in previously, dates to be advised later. Alan Thompson gave us a brief over view of the District Leadership Seminars that he and Lea Rickwood have been attending. Youth Director, David Randall, advised that nominations were being sought for this year’s RYPEN Camp aimed at youth in Year 10 about 16 years of age. Please let David know if we have relatives or friends we would like to nominate. Membership Director Bill Connelly had deputy Allan remind us of the importance of inviting friends and acquaintances as guests to our Rotary Meetings. Beth Dermody promoted Quota’s upcoming Golden Hearts Luncheon for which they have secured internationally acclaimed speaker, our very own PDG Professor Graham Jones. See Beth for further information. Lionel Perry acting Carousel Co-ordinator advised that we have gaps in our roster as Tony Pritchard recovers from pneumonia for his regular shift of a Thursday evening 6-9 for the next 3-4 weeks also a number of 12-3 shifts on Friday 20th, Monday 23rd Tuesday 24th and Friday 27th. Please give this some thought and advise Lionel if you can assist. Acting Secretary, Greg Dux advised that we had 22 members, 1 Partner and 2 guests of Rotarians attending for a total of 25. Sargent, Allan Thompson fined all who hadn’t acknowledged Secret Greeter, Don Ashmore, all those who had not been pulled over for a RBT, all who had something special organized for this weekend and double for those that don’t as Saturday is Valentines’ Day, then all the women and all the men for something to do with Julie Bishop and Malcolm Turnbull and of course collected our $2 Polio Plus contribution. Beth Dermody cross fined Allan for his bright blue and white shoes Heads and Tails was won by Michael Irving Raffle was won by the Scribe Tracy Narain gave an excellent overview of her life and values, before and outside of Rotary. Tracy admitted to addressing a Rotary Group previously in East London, South Africa, her country of birth and where part of her will always belong. School was tough until it was realised Tracy was dyslexic , a diagnosis that inspired her to overcome and channelled her toward sport. Her Father and Grandmother, major influences in her life were keen sports people so Tracy took up swimming, an activity in which she found peace and sanctuary. At age 12 she overheard her Coach declaring that she would never be anything more than a relay support swimmer and she was fired up to be more, reaching the State Team, the National Team achieving Gold in the South Africa Games then Commonwealth Games Team travelling the world over and developing strong self belief.

Rotator 10 February 2015 4 The bubble of life in the pool was blown when she moved to at the age of 21 where she learnt that family is not necessarily a blood connection but about people who wanted you in their lives. Age 22 saw her start a business which she later sold but is still operating and then 17 yrs ago married Greg the love of her life and strongest support with whom she has three children James, Josh and Bella aged 13,10 and 3 respectively. Tracy is loving life as a mother, mistress (to her labradoodle pup), coach, passionate renovator and now Rotarian. DGN Michael Irving then gave an update on two programmes that this Club was heavily involved in 1. Projects in Tanzania, recipients of our container load of incredibly diverse donations for which Andrew Middleton was the driving force, with club support. We were able to see the computers and desks in place in school rooms fully operational and be reassured that the donated items got where they were intended, were useful, appreciated and making a difference in people’s lives. 2. RYLA. Michael spent some time at the recent RYLA camp at Tyalgum Ridge Resort and was able to witness first hand, the profound impact the program had on these young people and the quality, experience and dedication of the guest speakers who donate their time year after year. Apparently if the speakers were paid their normal commercial rate, the cost per attendee would be $8,000. Michael was reassured of the value of the programme acknowledging the support of other organizations such as Twin Towns, Village Road Show, local businesses and Councils that shared the vision.

President Marion thanked Tracy and Michael for their contributions and closed the meeting reminding us of the strength of Rotary in bringing people together for the long term betterment of so many people.

Cheers, Graham C

Thoughts for the Week, with the World Cup in mind.

Extract from the 20 Greatest Sledges of All Time, listed by Popular Vote.

20. & . Malcolm Marshall was to David Boon, who was having a bit of trouble against the fast bowler and had played and missed a few times. Marshall : "Now David, are you going to get out or am I going to have to come round the and kill you?".

19. Merv Hughes & . Merv Hughes was all over Gooch in one test and proceeded to say: "Would you like me to bowl a piano and see if you can play that".

16. Merv Hughes & . During a test between Pakistan and Australia in 1991 Miandad tried to sledge Merv: "Merv you are a big, fat bus conductor". Only a few balls later Merv dismissed Miandad, ran past him and shouted: "Tickets please!".

15. & Arjuna Ranatunga. The Australians were getting frustrated while trying to get the wicket of the portly Arjuna Ranatunga of Sri Lanka. Various tactics were tried and failed until Healy came up with a winner: "Put a Mars Bar on a good length and that should do it!".

14. Herschelle Gibbs & . In the 1999 World Cup Australia needed to beat South Africa to keep their tournament hopes alive. Steve Waugh was on 56* and leading Aus to victory when he gifted Gibbs a simple catch. Gibbs went to celebrate the catch but instead dropped it, leaving Waugh to retort: "You've just dropped the World Cup". He was right too, Aussie went on to win the game and the tournament, knocking out South Africa in the process.

11. Merv Hughes & . Merv was bowling a few crackers that Smith couldn't even get an edge to. Merv: "If you turn the bat over you'll get the instructions mate".

Rotator 10 February 2015 10

7. . An Australian batsman was walking onto the field, opened the gate and before he could shut it, Trueman remarked: "Don't bother shutting it, son, you won't be there long enough".

5. Daryll Cullinan & . Cullinan was well known as being a bit of a bunny to Warne's bowling. The 2 hadn't played each other in some time so when Cullinan walked out to bat, Warne couldn't resist heckling him: "I've been waiting two years for another chance at you". Cullinan got him back with a ripper: "Looks like you spent it eating..."

3. Fred Trueman & Raman Subba Row. Fred Trueman was bowling and got an edge from the batsman which went between Row's legs, who was at slip. At the end of the over, Row runs over to Trueman and says: "Sorry Fred, I should've kept my legs closed". Trueman: "So should your mother".

2. & James Ormond. James Ormond came out to bat in a match with Australia. Mark Waugh, at slip, let rip: "What are you doing out here? You're too shit to play for England!" Ormond replied: "Maybe so, but at least I'm the best player in my family".

1. & Greg Thomas. In a county match in England, Thomas was bowling to Richards and getting a few to whizz past the bat. After Richards played and missed another one, Thomas said: "It's red, it's round. Now f@#$%&n hit it!". This obviously angered Richards who proceeded to hit the next ball out of the ground. Richards: "You know what it looks like now go and get it."
