wn 070 www.alumni.du.ac.in The University of Delhi Alumni edition 8 2020 International artiste Kabir Bedi Turns 74, 2020 Actor Kabir Bedi enjoys an immensely successful and versatile career spanning 5 decades, three continents and various media platforms. As he turns 74, we got in touch with him for a freewheeling chat. On Italian Series “La tigre è ancora viva: Sandokan alla riscossa!” 1964 Sandokan set the stage for my international career. Then The Thief of Baghdad (1978) and Octopussy (1983) happened. It was very difficult at that time. No one was writing roles for people like me but today they are, which makes me very happy since this is what we fought for and this is what we wanted. On Setting Trends in Bollywood My career in Bollywood has been very brief. From the stint in Khoon Bhari Maang to where I have done films like Main Hoon Na, Kites and Mohenjodaro. So, most of my career has been abroad. On Life “One ( value ) is positivism”. “… taking little portions of spices like turmeric, dalchini, cinnamon, ginger, garlic, honey, etc. and a little portion of all that. I believe they really work”. On Granddaughter Alaia She is an unbeatable combination because she has prepared herself. I am not saying this because she is my granddaughter, but you will see that with the first two movies she is doing. Jawaani Jaaneman and one with Anurag Kashyap which are two different roles which she has pulled off brilliantly. “…We are living in the most exciting time in history. Punjabi Community Profile July 2016 Punjab Background The Punjabis are an ethnic group of Indo-Aryan peoples, originating from the Punjab region, found in Pakistan and northern India. Punjab literally means the land of five waters (Persian: panj (“five”) ab (“waters”)). The name of the region was introduced by the Turko-Persian conquerors of India and more formally popularized during the Mughal Empire. Punjab is often referred to as the breadbasket in both Pakistan and India. The coalescence of the various tribes, castes and the inhabitants of the Punjab into a broader common “Punjabi” identity initiated from the onset of the 18th century CE. Prior to that the sense and perception of a common “Punjabi” ethno-cultural identity and community did not exist, even though the majority of the various communities of the Punjab had long shared linguistic, cultural and racial commonalities. Traditionally, Punjabi identity is primarily linguistic, geographical and cultural. Its identity is independent of historical origin or religion, and refers to those who reside in the Punjab region, or associate with its population, and those who consider the Punjabi language their mother tongue. Integration and assimilation are important parts of Punjabi culture, since Punjabi identity is not based solely on tribal connections. More or less all Punjabis share the same cultural background. Historically, the Punjabi people were a heterogeneous group and were subdivided into a number of clans called biradari (literally meaning “brotherhood”) or tribes, with each person bound to a clan. However, Punjabi identity also included those who did not belong to any of the historical tribes.

This report is available on the World Wide Web at https://escholarship.org/uc/item/75j1b2cg. 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY • The Indian film industry releases the largest number of movies in the world, 1500-2000 movies in Hindi and other regional languages, which are watched by more than 2 billion Indian moviegoers and millions more worldwide. • The tobacco industry has been using movies to promote their products for over a century. • In India, the Cinematograph Act, 1952, and Cable Television Networks Amendment Act, 1994, nominally provide for regulation of tobacco imagery in film and TV, but the Ministry of Information and Broadcast (MoIB), the nodal ministry, has not considered tobacco imagery. • The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 (COPTA), enforced by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), prohibited direct and indirect advertisement of tobacco products.

CONGRESS SOCIALIST PARTY (CSP) AT A GLANCE AND SHORT PROFILES WORKS OF ITS LEADERS In 1926, Sampurnand and Acharya Narendra Deva draw up a socialist agrarian program, under the aegis of UP Congress Committee (UPCC) and send it to the perusal of AICC. Jawaharlal Nehru got the AICC, to accept this UPCC’s Socialist Programme, in 1929.At the 1931, Karachi session of the Indian National Congress, socialist pattern of development was set as the goal for India and resolution on fundamental rights and economic programme was passed by AICC. According to Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, who drafted the Karachi resolution of AICC, the origin of this resolution was UPCC’s resolution of 1929. (Pt.J.L.Nehru’s Autobiography, P.266). During 1932 movement, many socialist-minded young men people like Jayaprakash Narayan, Minoo Masani, Achyut Patwardhan, Ashok Mehta, Charles Mescrenhas, Narayan Swami, M L Dantawala, N G Gorey and S M Joshi were lodged in Nasik Jail in 1932-33, in connection with Civil disobedience Movement. While in jail they all felt to form a Congress Socialist Party with in the Congress Party (INC) wedded to Marxism. At the same time a group of ‘left wing’ Congressmen disillusioned with the policy of Congress, met at Poona in July 1933 for the purpose of organizing a Socialist opposition group. They elected a committee to draft a constitution and programme which subsequently became known as the “Poona draft ”. The meeting was organized by Purshottam Tricumdas, Yusuf Meherally, Smt.
