The challenge becomes compounded when one is attempting to delve into obscure philosophical texts that many have relegated to the heap of inconsequential historical labors. Thank you, brotha! 5 6 Abstract ! Jean-Paul Sartre!s Critique of Dialectical Reason is generally read as a work of social ontology and/or normative social theory. The present project proposes that it is better to approach CDR as a heuristic, as a formal, logical investigation into the elementary formal structures of history. Once the ontological and normative hermeneutic is attuned towards a hypo-logical reading, CDR becomes a proto-text of critical theory that can aid future theorists in both analyzing material conditions and proposing paths for liberatory praxis. "This thesis is divided into two parts. Part One is an analysis of the key formal, logical constructions in Jean-Paul Sartre!s Critique of Dialectical Reason. Their intelligibility is the result of a fresh reading of a text that has been either relatively neglected or that has been read within a particular, predefined way. This reading will be challenged through an exegetical approach, while also engaging with key figures of the standard interpretive approach. The intent is not to smear previous interpreters, for this work is heavily indebted to them, but to suggest a slight corrective that will enable a hidden richness of this text to be uncovered. At the end of Part One, the various modes of “practical ensembles” will be understood by their formal, logical, and heuristic value. This will allow us to construct a theory of a logical disposition that is being termed an #imaginative logic of action! that will resist the hegemonic control of seriality. "Part Two connects these concepts with Sartre!s early work on the imagination and suggests further ways in which such a marriage can be strengthened by analyzing select tendencies from recent trends in Continental Philosophy.

Michael Polanyi, scientist and philosopher, has written a remarkable volume to argue the proposition that all knowledge is "personal." He says that the pur- pose of his book is "to show that complete objectivity as usually attributed to the exact sciences is a delusion and is in fact a false ideal." (p. 18) In ar- guing thus, he proposes to move "towards a post-critical philosophy" in this "enquiry into the nature and justification of scientific knowledge"1 in particular and of knowledge in general. Polanyi regards knowing "as an active com- prehension of the things known, an action that requires skill." In order to achieve such active comprehension, whether theoretical or practical, "clues or tools" have to be employed, and they, he says, are 'things used as such and not observed in themselves." He sees these clues and tools as extensions of the body, which change the comprehender's being.

All but Sartre have explicitly rejected the term as not descriptive ; of their own thought; and Marcel, Heidegger and Jaspers, in rejecting the term, have indicated their repugnance to being mentioned in the same breath with Sartre. Sartrets system is certainly the nearest to matching the popular understanding of existentialism. This popular understanding, however, has laid hold of a spirit characteristic of a prevalent cultural phenomenon, rather than a philosophical system. A properly philosophical understanding of Sartre demands careful research into the philosophical background of his thought, and especially into the precise relation of Sartre to German phenomenology. It is the purpose of this paper to clarify a basic methodological point in Sartrets procedure, against the background of the thought of Edmund Husserl; the precise point at issue is Sartrets conception of mants "being-in-the-world," a conception which serves as the starting point of his philosophical project. We will first of all cast the problem into its historical context, and present a detailed analysis of this question; then we 1 2 will attempt to illustrate the approach of Sartre by drawing upon several features of the phenomenological ontology of his Being and Nothingness.

COURSE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF STAVANGER, NORWAY, SEPTEMBER 15-17,2010 Disability, Appearance,Politics A comment from theology Dag Helge Moldenhagen 15.10.2010 Abstract: Within western political culture an increasing emphasis has been placed on the anesthetization of life. One of the victims to this change is people with disability. People with disability now recognize a shift in political attitude. While change in “look” and “posture” earlier were tolerated as part of a human register of appearance, a shift of lifestyles and fashioned icons of beauty coupled with a logic of how citizens ought to be given status frame disability into a negative aesthetics of appearance. Since aesthetics and political discourse become more closely related and form presupposition for “aesthetic citizenship”, there is a need to think in new ways of how to contribute to a liberation from this kind of political suppression. From the perspective of the need for a social repair (Arendt), my contribution will first discuss how the politics of appearance frames disability negatively. Through considering the contributions of Rancière, Merléau-Ponty, Sartre, and Kearney I show how an understanding of disability reduced to a merely `negative ontology, can be contrasted with a philosophy of the negative that takes the negative as embodied possibility. In the last part of the essay I consider how the philosophy of negativity can change how we “judge” disability. His two doctoral theses were on Heraclitus and Marx. In addition he translated Heidegger, Georg Lukács, and Karl Korsch. He is best known for his works on the concept of the world—particularly the 1969 book Le jeu du monde—, as one of the editors of the journal Arguments, and as editor of the book series of the same name published by Les Éditions des Minuit.
