    Baptist gun giveaway Kentucky Baptists use gun giveaways to lure unchurched to Christ Andrew Wolfson The Courier-Journal Feb. 28, 2014 In an effort its spokesman has described as "outreach to rednecks," the Kentucky Baptist Convention is leading "Second Amendment Celebrations," where churches around the state give away guns as door prizes to lure in non-believers in hopes of converting them to Christ. Chuck McAlister uses the love of guns and hunting in Kentucky as a “bridge to unchurched men so they will hear what we have to say.” As many as 1,000 people are expected at the next one, on Thursday at Lone Oak Baptist Church in Paducah, where they will be given a free steak dinner and the chance to win one of 25 handguns, long guns and shotguns. The goal is to "point people to Christ," the church says in a flier. Chuck McAlister, an ex-pastor, master storyteller and former Outdoor Channel hunting show host who presides at the events as the Kentucky Baptist Convention's team leader for evangelism, said 1,678 men made "professions of faith" at about 50 such events last year, most of them in Kentucky. In Louisville, he said, more than 500 people showed up on a snowy January day for a gun giveaway at Highview Baptist Church in Louisville, and 61 made decisions to seek salvation. ADVERTISING McAlister's boss, Paul Chitwood, the Kentucky Baptist Convention's executive director, says such results speak for themselves. "It's been very effective," he said in an interview. But other clergy question what guns and gun rights have to do with with sharing the Gospel.

    The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission | Here We Stand As evangelical Christians, we dissent from the court’s ruling that redefines marriage. The state did not create the family, and should not try to recreate the family in its own image. We will not capitulate on marriage because biblical authority requires that we cannot. The outcome of the Supreme Court’s ruling to redefine marriage represents what seems like the result of a half-century of witnessing marriage’s decline through divorce, cohabitation, and a worldview of almost limitless sexual freedom. The Supreme Court’s actions pose incalculable risks to an already volatile social fabric by alienating those whose beliefs about marriage are motivated by deep biblical convictions and concern for the common good. The Bible clearly teaches the enduring truth that marriage consists of one man and one woman. From Genesis to Revelation, the authority of Scripture witnesses to the nature of biblical marriage as uniquely bound to the complementarity of man and woman. This truth is not negotiable. The Lord Jesus himself said that marriage is from the beginning (Matt. 19:4-6), so no human institution has the authority to redefine marriage any more than a human institution has the authority to redefine the gospel, which marriage mysteriously reflects (Eph. 5:32). The Supreme Court’s ruling to redefine marriage demonstrates mistaken judgment by disregarding what history and countless civilizations have passed on to us, but it also represents an aftermath that evangelicals themselves, sadly, are not guiltless in contributing to. Too often, professing evangelicals have failed to model the ideals we so dearly cherish and believe are central to gospel proclamation.

In response to the World Health Organization declaring the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak to be a global pandemic, Greear and the GCC, which is composed of the heads of the convention's national entities, issued the following: Day of Prayer for the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Global Pandemic Sunday, March 15, 2020 In light of the coronavirus (COVID-19) global pandemic, we are asking all Southern Baptists and our 47,500+ churches of the Southern Baptist Convention to commit to a dedicated time of prayer this Sunday, March 15, 2020, to seek the Lord in unity about these matters: 1. Ask God, in His mercy, to stop this pandemic and save lives -- not only in our communities but around the world, particularly in places that are unequipped medically to deal with the virus. (Isaiah 59:1-2) 2. Pray for President Donald Trump and other government leaders -- international, federal, state, and local -- to have the wisdom to direct us in the best courses of action for prevention and care.

The second volume is a wonderful pictorial history, which provides a beautiful overview of life along The Maple Trail. Both volumes are available in the University enjoy this year Barnes and Noble Bookstore located in the Davenport Student Commons Building.
