Fifth Sunday of Lent

Once again this week, we are reminded of what a loving and merciful God we serve. The theme of the readings for this fifth Sunday of Lent are summed up COLLECTION FOR MARCH 31 beautifully in today’s Gospel passage from Luke, which recounts the story of the woman caught in adultery. After all those who would have stoned this REGULAR OFFERTORY woman leave the scene Christ says to her, “Neither Loose Cash & Checks $1,372.00 do I condemn you. Go, and from now on do not sin anymore.” When we turn to God for forgiveness, He Envelope Cash & Checks $8,767.00 is indeed gracious and merciful. So much so, that not Online Giving $5,688.53 only will He forgive our sins without condemnation, He will make us completely new creations in Christ. TOTAL $15,827.53 Weekly Budget $15,833.33 What is more amazing is that this all-perfect and holy God of ours draws so very near to us. Our sins ACTUAL TO BUDGET -$5.47 do not drive Him from us, but rather to us so that He can set us free from them. Look carefully at Christ’s SECOND COLLECTION actions and posture in the Gospel reading as He deals Debt Reduction $210.03 with both the crowd of people, the Scribes and Phari- sees, and the adulterous woman. “All the people started coming to Him and he sat down and taught them.” “He bent down and began to write with His DIOCESAN SUPPORT APPEAL finger.” He “straightened up” when He confronted Cathedral Parish Assessment $95,082.00 the Scribes and Pharisees about their own sins. And he “straightened up” when He assured the woman Amount Paid to date $25,321.59 that He did not condemn her for her past. Like a Pledge Balance $28,033.76 skilled teacher, or loving “big brother,” Christ bends Over / Under Assessment -$41,726.65 down to where we are, He sits among us, He stands to confront us when needed and He stands to look us in the eye to remind us of our true dignity.

We’re all unworthy of the great privilege of serving Him. But that is simply cause for greater joy in serv- ing Him with all our hearts.

INTERESTEDINTERESTED ININ BECOMIBECOMINGNG AA MEMBERMEMBER OFOF THE CATHEDRAL OF SAINT PATRICK? Church membership is an obligation of discipleship and love that derives from being united with Christ. A person becomes a member of the Catholic Church through Baptism. At the Cathedral, active membership is a requirement for the celebration of a marriage or baptism, for one to be eligible to be a Godparent or Confor- mation sponsor, and for special benefits such as tuition subsidy at a Catholic school. There are certain mini- mum requirements for parish membership called the precepts of the Church. The following are three of those precepts and how the Cathedral of Saint Patrick looks upon them in relation to parish membership.

 ATTENDANCE AT WEEKLY MASS. The first precept of the Church requires the faithful to participate in the Eu- charistic celebration when the Christian community gathers together on the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord (CCC #2042) and on holy days of obligation (CCC #2043). Since the Cathedral’s weekly Mass attendance enve- lopes are the primary way we determine if parishioners are regularly attending Mass, parishioners must place their enve- lopes in the collection basket every Sunday regardless of whether one makes a financial contribution. If a parishioner gives online or prefers to place cash in the offertory basket, an empty Mass attendance envelope should still be placed in the basket with "I attended Mass" checked.

 RECEIPT OF THE SACRAMENTS. The third & fourth precept of the Church states the faithful must ensure prepara- tion for the Eucharist by the reception of the sacrament of reconciliation at least once a year, and the reception of Holy Communion at least once a year during the Easter season (CCC #2042) and join in fast and abstinence during Lent.

 SUPPORT OF THE CHURCH. The fifth precept of the Church states that the faithful have the duty of providing for the material needs of the Church, each according to their

abilities in a regular, identifiable and meaningful way.

WELCOME NEW PARISHIONERS BANNS OF MARRIAGE

The following people have recently registered Please keep the following couples in your prayers as they prepare for the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony: as parishioners of the Cathedral:

Adriana Street & Domenico Marsocci Wedding: April 26, 2019 Elizabeth Coyle Kayleigh Adair & Blair Cannon Keith & Janielle Dennis Wedding: April 27, 2019 Hallie Vardeman & Michael Whelan Wedding: May 4, 2019 SAINTS OF THE WEEK Sunday, April 7: St. John Baptist de la Salle—Confessor Memorial St. John was born into a noble family in Rheims, France on April 30, 1651. After being educated in Paris, he was ordained to the priesthood in 1678. Two years later, he earned his doctorate in theology. John founded the Institute of the Brothers of Christian Schools to provide education for poor young boys. His institute taught lessons in the vernacular, rather than Latin, and promoted learning in a classroom setting over individual instruction. John established colleges to train teachers in Rheims, Paris, and Saint-Denis. In 1705, he founded a reform school for boys in the city of Dijon.

Monday, April 8: St. Julie Billiart—Virgin St. Julie Billiart was born into a wealthy farming family in Cuvilly, France in 1751. During her teenage years, her family’s fortunes went south, and she was forced to take up manual labor. During this time, she regularly taught catechism to her fellow farmers and poor young children. Following the attempted murder of her father, which she witnessed, Julie experi- enced a nervous system condition which left her almost completely paralyzed. For the next twenty years, she was confined to her bed where she continued to teach the Faith to those who wanted to learn. During the French Revolution, Julie of- fered safe housing for priests. After experiencing a vision, she founded the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, an order who was dedicated to teaching poor young girls the Faith. Around this time, she was miraculously cured of her paralysis. Julie made her religious vows in 1805, and was chosen to be the first superior of the community. Tuesday, April 9: St. Gaucherius—Abbot and Hermit St. Gaucherius was born in Meulan-sur-Seine, France in the year 1060. When he turned eighteen, he decided to live a solitary life devoted to God, and began living as a hermit in the forest of Limoges where he constructed his own hermitage. He was soon joined by his friend, Germond. Over time, other people became disciples of Gaucherius, and a monastic community was formed under the rule of St. Augustine. St. John's Monastery at Aureilfor was constructed for these men to reside. He also built a convent for women. Gaucherius passed away in 1140 after falling off a horse.

Wednesday, April 10: St. Michael de Sanctis—Confessor St. Michael de Sanctis was born in , in 1591. When he was six years of age, he informed his par- ents that he wanted to become a monk. Following the death of his parents, he joined the Trinitarian Fathers of in 1603 when he was 12 years old. He made his final vows as a religious in 1607 at St. Lambert's mon- astery in Saragosa. Desiring a simpler life, he requested and was granted permission to join the reformed Trini- tarians, who lived simply and didn’t wear shoes. Michael studied for and was ordained to the priesthood. Throughout his life, he practiced severe mortifications and devoted much of his time to prayer. He had a strong devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and was said to have experienced ecstasies during Mass. Thursday, April 11: St. Stanislaus—Bishop and Martyr Optional Memorial St. Stanislaus was born on July 26, 1030 in Szczepanow, located near the city of Krakow, Poland. As a young man, he was educated at the Cathedral school of Gniezno and studied in Paris leading up to his ordi- nation as a priest. He was assigned the duties of being archdeacon and preacher, where he experienced suc- cess in producing conversions. In 1072, he was appointed Bishop of Krakow. Observing immoral behaviors on the part of King Boleslaus II, Stanislaus spoke out against the king in public. The king repented, but soon returned to his old ways when he kidnapped another man’s wife. Stanislaus had the king excommunicated, and the king responded by personally taking Stanislaus’ life while he celebrated the Mass. Friday, April 12: St. Sabas the Goth—Martyr St. Sabas was born in the year 334 in the Buzau river valley of Romania. Sabas was a member of the pagan Goths, but converted to Christianity and served as a lector in Targoviste, Romania. The Goths who ruled the area fre- quently attempted to identify and kill Christians by asking them to eat meat offered to the pagan gods. After sur- viving these attempts to identify him, Sabas was finally discovered to be a Christian when he refused to eat the idols’ meat. Noticing his boldness, and suspecting that torture would have no effect on him, Sabas was captured and drowned in the Mussovo River. Approximately fifty Christians were martyred that day.

Saturday, April 13: Pope St. Martin I—Pope and Martyr Optional Memorial Pope St. Martin I was born in Tuscany, Italy during the late sixth century. After serving as deacon, he was given the task of representing Pope Theodore I in a dispute over the heresy of monothelitism, which believed that Christ, although God and man, only had a divine will. Martin was elected to the papacy in 649, and he continued to fight for the teaching that Christ had both a human and divine will. Martin called the Lateran Council of 649 where monothelitism was con- demned. The emperor Constans II, a firm defender of monothelitism, ordered that Martin be arrested. Martin spent three months in prison. He was found guilty of treason, then imprisoned another three months before being sent into exile in Crimea. After suffering through poor living conditions and various illnesses, Martin passed away.

This year, the theme of the Diocesan Support Appeal (DSA) is “We Are His Hands.” This is a heartfelt re- minder and opportunity to put our faith into action to help those in need. It also beautifully reminds us of the mission of the ministries supported by the DSA, and what they do for thousands of our brothers and sisters across western North Carolina.

The DSA provides support for more than 20 services that Catholic Charities of Charlotte offers throughout the diocese. The appeal also provides funding for Vocations, the Housing Ministry, Education Ministries (providing over 30 different services), Multicultural Ministries, and the Eucharistic Congress. Some of these ministries provide services beyond the scope of individual parishes and some exist for the sole purpose of as- sisting parishes in our own mission to teach, evangelize and serve you, our parishioners.

Thousands of people across the diocese benefit because of the DSA-funded ministries. To help support these ministries, each parish or mission has been assessed a specific amount of money. Those that surpass their as- sessed targets receive rebates of 100% of the amount received over their target. If a parish falls short of the target, then they must pay the shortfall from the parish operating budget. Among those served are:  19,000+ clients of Catholic Charities Diocese of Charlotte  300,000+ minority parishioners through multicultural ministries  120 permanent deacons in formation  28 seminarians in formation DONATE  46,200 children & adults in Faith Formation TODAY  7,000 grade school & high school students in Catholic Schools charlottediocese.org/dsa  6,700 teenagers through Youth Ministry

To help support these ministries, each parish or mission has been assessed a specific amount. Those that surpass their assessed targets receive rebates of 100 percent of the amount received over their target. If a parish falls short of the target, then they must pay the shortfall from the parish operating budget.
