FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 5, 2015 hello, olol… hough the calendar can’t lie - it sure seems that the ‘Fourth of July’ weekend has come up fast this year; hopefully it’s not literally the midpoint of Summer, 2015! And hopefully the celebration allows you some down time; some family and friend time; some time to give thanks for all the blessings God has given to our nation in 239 years, and to give thanks for all those who have “laid down their lives” (John 15) in the manner of Jesus, for us. Hopefully too, you may have some time to wade into Pope Francis’ recent encyclical letter – “Laudato Si” – “Praise be You, my God” The Internet’ link’ was emailed out last week; if you need it, please contact the parish office. We welcome Father Dan Schuster, Diocesan Vocations Director, who covers masses this weekend while I’m on retreat. Thank you Fr. Dan, for your zeal, your ministry here this weekend & for your work in helping the Lord and our Church to call our brothers and sons to the Lord’s service! God bless you! Also – speaking of diocesan staff, a transition in personnel for the Marriage annulment ministry staff. After 35 years in this area, Fr. Bob Kabat (left) has moved to be pastor at St. Matthew’s in Green Bay; and Father Brian Belongia ( right), a newly-minted Canon Lawyer, will take his place – both in the diocesan office and as pastor at Seymour and Isaar. I’m very glad that Father Bob will be a part of the GRACE System! And having served as a field advocate for the annulment ministry during his tenure, I want to thank him for being so pasto- ral, so compassionate, so efficient and so faithful – both to human reality and the Church’s Tradition. Many times he’s been a mentor ‘on the spot’ for me; always he’s been a great priestly and pastoral example! God bless both Fr. Kabat and Fr. Belongia in this time! Father Bob did his seminary study at St. John’s Collegeville. He knows, as I do from a sabbatical semester there in 2000, the beauty of the place ‘behind the pine curtain’ in central Minnesota, and the goodness of the Benedictine Community there. With my bike in tow, and the Pope’s encyclical in hand, and craving some solitude and space after a busy and blessed year here at OLOL, please know that you’re in my prayers while making retreat! It will also be a busy, jubilee, merciful, transitional year ahead for us all; so that’s a big part of my prayer and reflection as well! I ask your prayer for me as well, please? Thanks so much! Speaking of Minnesota, can we all keep the Local Church – the Archdiocese of Minneapolis-St. Paul – in our prayers these days for their healing, please? Their archbishop & also one of their auxiliary bishops resigned recently, having fallen short in their ministry of “protecting all of God’s children and vulnerable adults”. This ‘fallout’ from the clerical sexual abuse crisis has hurt the Church’s credibility in many ways, even as first and foremost, it has hurt children and families and their Faith. We continue to struggle, to fathom, resolve, reform, repent of and remedy this sad abuse. Holding bishops accountable in their response is another tangible ‘step forward’, even though it may cause short-term challenge. Also in June, Pope Francis set up a Vatican ‘tribunal’ to review, assess and sanction Church leaders (bishops) who have failed in their pastoral duty in this regard. This is also another step forward, for which we are grateful. And we all renew our promise and vigilance to appropriate behavior, wholesome relationships, responsible reporting of abuse and continuing education (VIRTUS & Praesidum), so that coming forward, and hopefully beyond this ‘crisis’ and scandal, we may model for others, a holy, honest and healing way to deal with it, stop it and find God’s Power to heal us all, as the Church, and as the Human Family! Please, God!

With regard to our parish life here at Lourdes…I hope you’re planning to schedule your appointment for your portrait for the 20th Anniversary OLOL Parish Pictorial Directory! Please call the office (336-4033) or go online to schedule! It’s costless and helps us celebrate our life “together in the Lord” by knowing each other better – by face, by name! It also gets us ready for the “second generation” of our parish life and history! Remember too on your calendar – our Annual Parish Meeting on September 27th after the 10:15 Mass in church. Norbertine Prior, (and our ‘Founding Associate Pastor’) Father Jim Baraniak, along with Trustees, Dave Loritz and Ray Diederich will conduct the meeting – the sole agenda item – to discuss the ‘pastoral transition’, scheduled for August 31, 2016, as my 12-year term here ends, as mandated by the bishop’s policy. Please plan to come and participate! And the Parish Mission with Fr. Dan Felton February 20-23, 2016. Please reserve those dates too! Thanks so much! You won’t be disappointed!! Even in the summer – no shortage of things to ponder & pray over! As we do – “God bless us…EVERY one”!

The Risen C hrist and Communion of Saints Window Our visually striking main sanctuary window shows the Risen Christ reaching out to welcome a very special Communion of Saints. Some of these persons lived in early times, but many are from recent times. Some are canonized; others led lives of exemplary Christian virtue. You may recognize some of them. Beginning at the upper right side of the window and going clockwise, you will see:

1. St. Thomas the Apostle, who reminds us of our humanity and weaknesses. It was he who needed to touch Jesus’s wounds himself to have proof of Jesus’s rising from the dead. He then uttered, “My Lord, and my God.”

2. Pope St. John XXIII, who conceived the idea of and opened Vatican II Council in 1962, modernizing the church (aggiornamento—a spirit of change and open- mindedness) while remaining a loving pastor. He died in 1963 before the Council was completed. He was canonized in April 2014.

3. Joseph Cardinal Bernadin of Chicago, whose book, The Gift of Peace, demon- strates how to accept both false witness and death itself with a most loving spirit. He died of cancer in 1996.

4. Blessed Mother Teresa, born in Macedonia in 1910, founded the religious or- der of Missionaries of Charity. She ministered to the poorest of the poor, allowing them to be treated with the greatest of respect. She saw Jesus in the disguise of the poor. She wanted us to always remember that a disease is not a judgment. Jesus did not judge, so why should we? She died in 1997.

5. St. Michael of the Saints (Michael de Sanctis), born in in 1591, be- came a Trinitarian friar in 1607. He served the poor, the unfortunate, and the sick. He is the patron of cancer patients. His intercessory help is sought through the No- vena to St. Michael of the Saints, which is recited before the Tuesday morning Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes. Michael de Sanctis died in 1625.

6. St. Kateri Tekakwitha, born in New York state in 1656, is honored as the first Native American saint. She is pictured here to honor the presence of the Native Americans in our area, who love and regard all that is sacred in our environment. St. Kateri was from the Algonquin/Mohawk tribes. She became a Christian and spent her life teaching prayers to children and helping the sick and aged. She died in 1680 from the effects of smallpox. She was canonized in 2012.

7. Dorothy Day, born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1897, was best known as founder of the Catholic Worker Movement, which served persons who were poor or home- less. She found beauty in places and faces that most would avoid in the slums and among the poor. It was her belief that the beautiful face of Christ is hidden in the face of America’s homeless and forgotten. She died in 1980.

8. Saint Katherine Drexel, born in Pennsylvania in 1858, was from a wealthy family. She was particularly concerned with the condi- tions of the poor Black and Native Americans. Using her own wealth, she founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. She died in 1955 and was canonized in 2000.

9. Sister Thea Bowman, born in Mississippi in 1937, was a Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Adoration. She was the granddaughter of a slave from Mississippi. She was a charismatic scholar and an animated speaker who inspired millions with her singing and message of God’s love for all races and faiths. She died in 1990.

10.The Woman of De Pere honors in particular all women of De Pere who have so beautifully contributed to the life and vitality of the . The figure is based on the life and death of Mary Beth (Van Dyk) Van Hefty, a woman of extraordinary faith and love, who died of cancer in 1999 at the age of 37, leaving behind her husband, Jim, and four young children. Ten days before she died, she and her husband composed a letter for each child as a reminder of her love and presence. The letter, with pictures and clippings, was placed in a box for each child. The woman in the window is presenting four boxes to the Risen Lord as her final gift of faith, hope, and love.

11. The Laborer of De Pere honors the men of the parish who gave so generously of their time, talent, and materials in building our church—a labor of real love. This honors all men of De Pere, reflecting the dignity of human labor and love.

If you want to know who is numbered in the , start by looking in the mirror. Fr. Conrad Kratz, our founding pastor, said, “We don’t realize that we have saints sitting next to us. Rather than judging people who might be different than us, we should reach out to them and welcome them, because they’re probably saints.”
