We are always with you, Maria Esperanza. You are always in our minds and in our hearts, we love you infinitely. Many people joined us that day, because they remember you because of all the graces you scattered here on earth. Right now you must be enjoying the kingdom of God. This is what we all dream of. It is the dream I always have in mind, to reach that kingdom. Lord, may I be worthy! Let me pay for all my sins! May I be yours forever, Lord, so one day I may accompany you for all eternity! This is the true dream that every Christian, who has understood the meaning of his life, has. Thank you, Maria Esperanza for your love, for being with us in our suffering, our pain. We are with you.   • Saint Rosalia: the Sicilian Miracle Worker
    Saint Rosalia: The Sicilian Miracle Worker Growing up in an ethnic, Italian parish with the Traditional Mass and Sacraments, I had the best of both worlds. The Sacred Liturgy of all time was offered in an Italian renaissance style church, complemented throughout the year by different devotions, various acts of popular piety, and most especially, numerous feasts of Our Lord, Our Lady and the Saints. Perhaps the only such example in the United States, this church is unique in itself in that two canonized saints, one blessed and one venerable, visited and prayed there. These feasts were and remain the best efforts of thousands of Italian immigrants and their descendants to venerate (and to spread devotion to) the patrons of the towns and cities they were forced to leave. They almost always brought on their long and difficult voyages a small image of their patron saint, whose intercession they knew would see them through. Once settled in their new country, residents of a particular town or city in Italy would find each other, and often settling in the same parishes and neighborhoods, would establish some kind of a society and organize a feast in honor of their patron including a High Mass, a procession, some kind of dinner or dessert, music and folk dancing, and even reworks! Other, unique traditions would mark particular feasts, customs which were copied from the celebrations in Italy such as barefoot races or preparing certain foods. The immigrants scrimped and saved (including door to door collections in Italian neighborhoods) not only for the annual feast, but also for the eventual purchase of a larger statue of the saint in question, which would be temporarily enshrined in the church’s sanctuary for the feast and carried in the festal procession, and then would be kept in the church year round for the devotion of the faithful.

But from her youth, Rosalia knew she was called to dedicate her life to God. She felt a greater, more important call, a very strong eremitical vocation. Following the example of anchorites, who left the comforts and active life retreated to a cave or in a cell, usually near a church or a convent, Rosalia retreated to a cave in the paternal feud of Quisquinia about 20 km.

Introduction This essay explores the mid-Lenten Tavola di San Giuseppe (St. Joseph’s Table) in Los Angeles, situates this tradition within its historical and geographic cultural contexts, and seeks to interpret its various meanings.     Art Appreciation Lecture Series 2015 Meet the Masters: Highlights from the Scottish National Gallery Portrait of the Artist as a Young Internationalist: Van Dyck’s St Sebastian Bound for Martyrdom in the context of his early career Dr Christopher R. Marshall, University of Melbourne 22 / 23 April 2015 Lecture summary: Viewing Van Dyck’s early masterpiece, St Sebastian Bound for Martyrdom allows us to consider the role of artistic investigation and international travel in the development of Van Dyck’s career. As is well known, Van Dyck followed his master and mentor Rubens in developing an internationally oriented outlook to his career that was extraordinarily ‘Global’ for its day. This culminated in his extensive work – undertaken during most of the 1630s – painting for the court of King Charles I. The groundwork for this was laid in an extended series of sojourns in various centres in Italy from 1621-1627. During this time Van Dyck was based most extensively in Genoa, where his portraits, in particular, proved exceptionally popular among the new mercantile and aristocratic patrons then setting up extensive palaces and collections throughout the city. He also travelled to Sicily at the invitation of the Viceroy, Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy, a sign of his early fame and international recognition of his work. In Palermo, however, he became quarantined as a result of a devastating Plague that swept through the region from May 1624 – June 1626 and that killed many thousands of people – including the Viceroy himself. While there, Van Dyck painted a small group of devotional images of St Rosalie, who had been recently promoted as patron saint of the city and was prayed to for intercession against the Plague.

When her father promised her in marriage to Count Baldovino, who had saved him from being attacked by a lion during a hunting trip, the girl, looking at herself in the mirror, saw the image of Christ reflected in the glass. Rosalia then rejected the nuptial proposal, presenting herself on the wedding day with her hair cut off, and devoted herself to a hermit life, stopping first in a cave located near Santo Stefano Quisquina, then in a second one at Monte Pellegrino. In the present the Saint is receiving a crown of flowers from the direct hands of the Son, a literary license to the traditional crown of sanctification, referring to the virgin purity of Rosalia who agreed to become the bride of Christ alone, and a contemporary parallelism to her name.
