Looking back, what has W&J meant to you? Three life changing events occurred for me as a young man. First, at the age of 20, I emigrated from Holland to the U.S. and settled in Washington, Pa. The second event took place five years later when I started my studies at W&J. The third event occurred in November of 1964 during my senior year at W&J when I became a U.S. citizen. My decision to attend W&J and my resulting degree in economics served me well as I moved on to obtain a master’s degree in International Business. I then spent an exciting globe-trotting career in international banking, retiring as senior vice president and general manager of a major international bank. My years at W&J almost didn’t happen. I was initially rejected because Dr. Patterson, who was the president of W&J at the time, did not feel I had enough command of the English language and, additionally, that I did not have sufficient funds to pay for my education. I assured him that this was not the case. Even two freshman English summer school classes at W&J with good grades and letters of recommendation from Dr. Mosley and Dr. Whiting couldn’t persuade Dr. Patterson to admit me. With encouragement and help from Dr. Mosley, I enrolled in the University of Pittsburgh. Six months later, I received a letter inviting me to return to W&J to begin classes.
