Bledsoe County Correctional Complex is Proud to Congratulate the TTU Graduating Classes of 2020! A4 THE ORACLE TENNESSEE TECH GRADUATION FRIDAY, MAY 22, 2020

Dear spring 2020 graduates, ongratulations on earning your degree from C Tennessee Tech! I am grateful the Oracle is honoring you and that the editors gave me this opportunity to write to you. Stu- PRESIDENT PHIL OLDHAM dent newspapers serve an important role in capturing student experiences, opinions and events, and this is a moment in time that we need to mark in words, photos and memories. First, I encourage you to celebrate. There is no denying you lost moments and chances to make memories this semester. None of you escaped having your personal lives, family, and fi nances aff ected. But you responded with resolve, tenacity, common sense, eff ort, and patience despite your fears and concerns. Now celebrate your degree, your friendships and your future. Next, know that I saw proof of what you are made of before the pandemic, when the tornado swept away the normalcy of our city and our lives. I saw strength and compassion in your faces and heard it in your voices. You were determined to help others fi rst, and by doing that, you helped the community and yourself deal with the loss and grief. No one wants to come by experience through tragedy, but you didn’t collapse. You moved forward. And fi nally, focus on the future. You are no less of a Tech graduate because of your challenging experience this semester. In fact, you are the epitome of a Tech alum. You are bold, fearless and confi dent. I am proud of you. You made an investment in your future, and you are about to join thousands of Tech alumni who are known for being problem solvers who are both practical and innovative. You are prepared to join them. Valerie Hubert May you all live Wings Up!

Dear heroes of the future, Th e Nightingale Pledge n behalf of the faculty and staff of the WHSON, I want to express our OCONGRATULATIONS and say that we are so PROUD of you! It has I solemnly pledge myself before God been our honor and privilege to have educated each one in the May Class of and in the presence of this assembly 2020 graduating with a Bachelors or Masters of Science in Nursing degree. to pass my life in purity As a “chosen” Class, you experienced fi rsthand life-changing lessons. We and to practice my profession faithfully. watched as you volunteered, organized, and provided disaster relief/crisis management to the Cookeville community as lives and homes were lost. Social isolation may have shown us how to slow down and set priorities with faith and family with both our personal and professional lives.

As you transitioned from on-ground education and direct care to online and virtual clinical experiences, you recognized learning occurs everywhere—even technologically and from life. These unique life lessons will prepare and mold you for your journey as you touch the lives of hundreds and perhaps thousands with your knowledge, skill, clinical judgment, and ability as you provide quality care to individuals, families, and communities. We honor each one as you begin a life of servant leadership in the care and compassion for others.

As baccalaureate nurses, you are educated as generalists specializing in multiple areas depending on your interests and talents. Those of you with your MSN will use your expertise. Each one of you will have a unique way of serving others with individual strengths being care providers, administrators, educators, practitioners, and/or researchers. E. E. Hale, an American writer, put it this way: “I am only one; but still I am one. I cannot do every- thing; but still I can do something. And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.”

Remember you are only one person---but do what you can do best—with resilience, faith, passion, diligence, competence, and purpose and do it with love, courage, and honor for all!!! Don’t forget to assert and advocate for your fellow nurses and patients. You are the future nursing leaders possessing aware- ness, balance, and desire for life-long learning!

Thank you for being willing to become future heroes who are faithful and loyal to your profession, com- mitted to the care of self and others, and needed for the workforce of tomorrow!

Be Bold, Fearless, and Confi dent as you embark on this journey. We applaud you. photo by Luke Hayslette Pictured is Bell Hall where most nursing courses take place.

Dear graduates, ife is full of twists and turns; trials, and tribulations. This LSpring Semester has certainly been a challenge for each of us. As always, we persevere.

What we have learned from this experience is how much more capable and resilient we are. After we persevere, we thrive. I have been incredibly impressed, but not surprised, by how every one of DEAN JOSEPH SLATER RXUVWXGHQWVIDFXOW\DQGVWD̆KDYHUHVSRQGed to the challenge.

Your response to the adversity we’ve faced highlights the greatness of this generation and you as a senior class. You face adversity with levity but stand tall. You are the most innovative and creative class I’ve ever known. Each class has raised the bar for the next- that’s how it should be. You are hard-working and driven far more than most outside can see. I’ve seen this. Soon the world will see it, too.

All of us are disappointed that we will not have a normal graduation ceremony at the end of the semester. Being a part of this culmination of your academic career and cele- brating it with you is the greatest moment of the year for many of us. But, you are Ten- nessee Tech Golden Eagles. You will be back, and you will celebrate this moment when circumstances allow. I and others will be here eager to celebrate with you whenever you visit, whether at a ceremony or not. I want you to know that you leave here with the best degrees in the nation. Wherever you go, you will make us proud. Whenever you come back, we want to hear of the great things you’ve accomplished.

Congratulations on your graduation and be proud of all you’ve accomplished. We will be watching proudly as you go forth and continue the Tech tradition of being the best engineers, computer scientists, and engineering technologists in the nation. Valerie Hubert /HW·VFKDW)DYRULWHTXRWHVDQGPHPRULHV
