My Favourite Wife overjoyed Nick awkwardly tries to break the news gently to Bianca. But before he can do that, an unpleasant surprise--news that Ellen has My Favourite Wife the 7 years on a deserted island with fellow- survivor Burkett. Nick's jealousy tries to find out the truth. Hilarious confusion reigns before Nick chooses his favorite wife. A curious one that leaves a mildly bitter taste in the mouth. It's funny alright but never hilariousand the acting from - and chemistry between - Irene Dunne and Cary Crant is exquisite as always. But the film's fundamental problem is that none of the characters are particularly likable. Throughout the film three of the four main characters take their turn to behave despicably, yet the new wife - a woman who's merely unpleasant - is the villain of the piece; constantly the butt of jokes and fair game for ridicule even though she's done absolutely nothing to warrant it. At times it's like watching two spoilt My Favourite Wife from the Hamptons My Favourite Wife their visiting second-cousin from the Bronx. The script is also strangely stunted, best witnessed in the scenes before the judge. They really should have been classic screwball moments - the ingredients were there - yet between the lengthy silences and repetitive parrot- dialogue it falls almost completely flat. The gaping plot holes and poor script continuity can't be forgiven either, even allowing for the fact the film's seventy years old. Don't get me wrong, I laughed, and I enjoyed myself, and I thought it was a decent film. It's just that My Favourite Wife character's actions don't stand up too well under scrutiny. THE STILETTA NEWSLETTER VOLUME 20, ISSUE 3 AUGUST 2019 Dear Sisters and Misters, Happy Mid-Summer. As we read of heatwaves around the world, I have come to appreciate our mild Bay Area weather in a new way. For this quarterly letter, I’d like to take the opportunity to call out two unsung—at least not “sung” enough—heroes of Sisters in Crime NorCal. They are modest women, happy to toil behind the scenes for no other glory than their own pride and commitment. They do not know I’m writing this. For many of you, your initial contact with our chapter has been Malena Eljumaily, SinC NorCal’s Membership Coordinator. And for many, she remains an ongoing contact and is always ready to answer a member’s question or steer him or her in the right direction. As President, I turn to Malena frequently: she is our group’s institutional memory. She is also CONTENTS a talented, witty, and award-winning playwright. • The Structure of Repetition in the Cinema: Three Hollywood Genres
The Structure of Repetition in the Cinema: Three Hollywood Genres Inbar Shaham Open University of Israel, Department of Literature, Language, and the Arts Abstract The structure of repetition, as Meir Sternberg (1978) defines it, consists in the repeated presentation of a fabulaic event along the text continuum. It has three types of component members: (1) forecast (e.g., command, scenario); (2) enactment (represent- ing the forecast’s objective realization, as communicated by an authorized narrator); and (3) report (about an enactment, a forecast, or another report, all delivered by some character). This research examines the repetition structure in cinematic narrative: specifically, in heist, adventure, and military operation films. Throughout, the argu- ment proceeds with special reference to these genres, as well as to the cinema’s medium, practice, and conventions in general, often citing literary parallels or precedents for comparison. It examines the different elements that serve to (re)compose the repetition structure for certain ends; the types of member brought together within the structure; their size, number, forms of transmission, order of appearance, representational pro- portion, and possible interrelations (overlap, partial overlap, contradiction, expansion or summary of a previous member). Above all, the analysis relates these interplays themselves to the structure’s functions at the level of plot, meaning, and rhetoric, notably including their generic variations, as exemplified by the three focal genres. This article is based on parts of my doctoral dissertation, “Repetition Structure in the Cinema: From Communicational Exigency to Poetic Device” (Tel Aviv University, 2010). For details, see the appendix. I would like to thank Meir Sternberg for his generous and invaluable guid- ance in all stages of this research, from a BA seminar through an MA thesis and a PhD dissertation to this present publication.

Acquisition Method: Unknown BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Leo McCarey was born in Los Angeles on October 3, 1896, and attended Los Angeles High School, where he met his future wife, Stella Martin. Following his father’s wishes, he studied law at the University of Southern California, but was the first to admit he was a failure at the legal profession. During his first year at USC, he fell five floors in an elevator and broke his legs. While convalescing, he practiced six hours a day on the piano, an instrument he had studied as a child, and later described that period as being the first time in his life he was able to do something he loved. After completing law school, he spent a short time working in mining, including a Utah copper mine that he had purchased stock in with the $2,000 in damages he had received from his elevator accident (the stock proved worthless). After many unsuccessful attempts to get into the movie studios, a friend introduced him to Tod Browning, the director of the 1931 classic DRACULA, who invited him to work as his 3rd assistant director at Universal.

  • Cary Grant ~ 68 Films
Cary Grant ~ 68 Films Cary Grant is one of the most consistent stars from the Golden Age of the Hollywood Studio System. Perhaps more than any other actor, he understood that what he was presenting to the public was an image. Quite famously, he has been quoted as saying, "Everybody wants to be Cary Grant. Even I want to be Cary Grant." What this means for fans of the legendary actor is that when we sit down and watch one of his films, good or bad, we know what we can expect of Cary Grant. His long-lasting appeal is down to his striking good looks, his dashing poise and a natural gift for both romance and comedy. Cary Grant can make you laugh even while he sweeps you off your feet. Archibald "Archie" Leach was born on 18 January 1904 at 15 Hughenden Road in the Bristol suburb of Horfield. He was the second child of Elias and Elsie Leach (their first having died in 1900). His father worked as a tailor's presser at a clothes factory while his mother was from a family of shipwrights. Archie had an unhappy upbringing. His father was an alcoholic and his mother suffered from clinical depression. His father placed her in a mental institution and first told the nine-year-old that she had gone away on a "long holiday" and later that she had died. When Archie was ten, his father remarried and started a new family that did not include young Archibald. Little is known about how he was cared for, or by whom.
