NSIC North Offensive Preseason Player of the Year

#16 Phillip Klaphake (QB, 6-1, 185, Jr., Princeton, Minn./Princeton HS) St. Cloud State University Klaphake is a 2011 First Team All-NSIC quarterback and Academic All-NSIC Team member. He was named Third Team Offense on the 2011 Don Hansen Super Region Three team. He earned NSIC Player of the Week honors on Sept. 6, 2011. For a second straight year Klaphake will captain the Huskies. He has quarterbacked St. Cloud State to back to back NCAA Division II Football playoff appearances and the 2011 NSIC Co-Championship. In two seasons, he has passed for over 4,000 yards and rushed for over 1,000 career yards. He ranks fourth on SCSU’s all-time passing chart with 4,953 career yards. He ranks 21st in ca- reer rushing with 1,209 yards and is third in all-purpose yardage with 6,162 yards. His single game career high in passing yards came in 2011 with a 342-yard performance. St. Cloud State has a 19-5 record, two NCAA playoff appearances and an NSIC title in Klaphake’s two seasons at quarterback. He holds several single season records including best comple- tion percentage (65.6), most yards gained passing (2,918), most rushing/passing plays in a season (475) and most yards gained rushing and passing (3,716). Klaphake is a 2012 All State AFCA Good Works Team nominee.

NSIC North Defensive Preseason Players of the Year

#32 Marvin Matthews (DB, 6-0, 197, Sr., Roseville, Minn./Roseville Area HS) St. Cloud State University Matthews is a three-year starter at defensive back for the Huskies. He is a 2011 AFCA Division II First Team All-America, First Team All-NSIC, D2Football.com All-America Second Team and a Daktronics Super Region #3 Second team pick. In 2011 he led the Huskies in solo stops with 46 and ranked second on the team in total tackles with 70. He notched a team high three interceptions during the season. He recorded a season high ten tackles against Bemidji State on Nov. 5. He was an Honorable Mention All- NSIC team pick in 2010. Matthews is a 2012 BSN Third Team Preseason All-America.

NSIC SOUTH Offensive Preseason Player of the Year

#1 Rayon Simmons (RB, 5-10, 205, Sr., St. Louis, Mo. /Christian Brothers Academy/Northern Iowa) Simmons was an All-Region selection and All-NSIC First Team honoree in 2011. He enters his senior season needing 392 yards to become Winona State’s all-time leading rusher after he ran for 1,326 yards last season, the fourth most single-season yards in school history. He is the fourth player in school his- tory to reach 3,000 yards as he has run for 100 yards or more seven times. He put back-to-back 200 yard games against Southwest Minnesota State and Mary last season as he averaged 120.5 yards per game Simmons scored the game-winning touchdown with 24 seconds remaining in a 27-24 win at Wayne State. He carried the ball 37 times in the win, one off the school record.

NSIC SOUTH Defensive Preseason Player of the Year

#45 Austin Luecke (LB, 6-1, 225, Sr., Groton, S.D. / Groton HS) Augustana College Senior linebacker Austin Luecke frontlines the Augustana defense in 2012 returning as the team’s lead- ing tackler in 2011. Luecke, an All-NSIC South Division first team and Daktronics All-Super Region 3 second team selection in 2011, finished the season with 107 tackles, including a team-high 47 solo stops. Luecke had 10 or more tackles in a game six times last season and registered 10.0 tackles for loss. In NSIC contests, Luecke finished fourth in the league with 97 tackles, including 44 solo tackles.
