In a few short months, I can see the many challenges ahead to uphold an interesting and varied hiking program for our members while adapting to advancing technology, the influence of social media and a shift in demographics. Going forward I intend to build on my fourteen years of experience leading hikes and count on the support of our seventy dedicated hike leaders to continue to enhance our extensive program of organized events. Meanwhile join me in thanking Wayne Crockett for his wonderful stewardship as Hiking Director in the previous two years. As we welcome spring with optimism, I want to personally thank you for your ongoing support for our ski and snowshoe program as well as our day hikes and weekend trips. 2018 will no doubt bring continued renewals as our team of enthusiastic hike leaders steadfastly put together an entertaining program to appeal to all levels of hikers. In addition to those published in the Footnotes, many more hikes will be added to the Club’s online calendar when our volunteer hike leaders are able to schedule new events throughout the seasons. I look forward to seeing you at the Club’s Annual General Meeting on April 21st at the Kortright Centre for Conservation. You are invited to come and take part in one of the four hikes scheduled before lunch. For the convenience of members who do not or prefer not to drive, we have chartered two AGM buses, one each departing from York Mills and Islington. This year a $10 subsidized bus fare is put in place to avert a $1,000 deficit similar to what was incurred last year when the AGM bus rides were free. As mentioned elsewhere in the Footnotes, it has become necessary to implement a moderate fare increase to cover the cost of running our bus program. Unless bus fares are raised forthwith, the Club stands to lose money. We have seen First Student, the bus charter service provider, increase its pricing gradually over the last few years while the Club kept its bus fare unchanged for almost eight years (since 2010). The Board decided that starting April 1st, bus fares will increase by $1 for members and $2 for non-members. For short distance hikes members will pay $18 and non-members $25; for long distance travel, members will pay $23 and non-members $30; child fare remains unchanged at $5. On a different note, if you are interested in taking on a more active role contributing your leadership skills and personality to help the Club, consider being a hike leader and participate in our Hike Leader Training Workshop in the weekend of April 7th and 8th. If you know any friends or colleagues at work who are novice outdoor adventurers and would like to learn more about day hiking, introduce them to our three part Hiker Initiation Program: an information session at Central YMCA on April 11th, a presentation and club night at both MEC Toronto and North York stores on the following day April 12th and concluding with an introductory hike on April 14th. Remember, there is always an adventure waiting in the woods and I hope to see you on the trail. * * * * e-mail: [email protected] Spring 2018 3 www.torontobrucetrailclub.org TBTC AGM (continued): Volunteer Awards The TBTC invites nominations for the Club’s two volunteer awards: The Nina Carlisle Award is given to a longstanding volunteer (at least five years) who is actively involved in the activities of the Toronto Bruce Trail Club.
