It's bigger, better and there's something for everyone
ELBOURNE'S incredible new M Showgrounds have passed their biggest test, winning the overwhelming approval of almost 60o,00o people who streamed through the gates for last year's Show — the first after the $108 million renovation. Show patrons toured the new Livestock Pavilion, sampled food and wine in the Grand Pavilion, watched the spectacular entertainment on the Coca-Cola Arena, sang and danced along with the entertainers on stage in the Herald Sun Town Square, marvelled at the beautiful exhibits in the Art and Craft Pavilion and were stunned by the fashion on the catwalk in the Fibre to Fashion Pavilion. You screamed your lungs out on the rides, bought showbags by the dozen, learned about agricultural innovation, patted lambs, calves and chooks and had so much fun. In short, it was a wow of a Show. Incredible as it may seem, this year promises to be even bigger and better. So what is there to get excited about at this year's Royal Melbourne Show?

Owners have a passion for showing their cattle, sheep, goats, dogs, alpacas and poultry
I ILL and Ian Chappel bring their j champion simmental and brahman cattle to the Show each year because it's a chance to see their friends. And the trip to Melbourne from Tennyson, near Rochester, gets them off the farm. Their youngest son, Dale, 12, is showing his charbrays because he's bursting with enthusiasm for his own stud, Zantuk Creek, and a member of a family in which everyone is into showing cattle. And when you're in year 6 and that keen about something, you don't care that you're the only person exhibiting charbrays. As he found out last year, your cattle are still judged, you still learn a lot and you can win a ute-load of ribbons. The Chappels' neighbour at Tennyson, Peter Collins, brings his angus cattle to the Show as a marketing exercise. If a visitor to the Show notices your cattle and likes what they see, they're more likely to choose your stock when they're next looking to buy. Collins says he often gets a few phone calls from potential buyers after exhibiting at the Show. The angus breed, one of the most common and best-known in Australia, needs little publicity, but the Show is a vital marketing tool for lesser-known breeds such as belgian blues or brahmans, Collins says. The same sort of general marketing benefit applies to less common animals, such as alpacas. Collins won't only be showing his angus. He'll be at the Show this year as a judge for the murray grey breeds and for the junior beef cattle handlers' competitions, his favourite part of the Show. "I love doing this and it's important: it's the future of our industry," Collins, who has judged junior beef cattle handlers' competitions at most of the big shows around Australia, says. "And it's not about winning. It's about being involved, learning from the experience and building confidence. I try to get the microphone around to every entrant." The junior beef cattle handlers prepare their animals as if they were being judged in any other livestock category. The animals and their handlers are judged on presentation and the handlers are judged on how they parade the animal. Handlers are usually aged from 8 to i8 and there may be more than i5o entries across four categories at the Show this year. "It doesn't have to be a fantastic animal if we can see that it is well prepared and well paraded," Collins says.

OSH Adamson and Patrick Barrett are the young guns of woodchopping — Adamson is Australia's under-21 team captain, Barrett the New Zealand under-21 manager. And they're in peak condition for a trans-Tasman Test under lights for the first time at the Coca-Cola Arena. Veteran Australian axeman Laurence O'Toole says the under-21 trans-Tasman competition has been so close in recent years he can't pick the winning team. "There's absolutely nothing in it," O'Toole, who has been chopping at the Show for about 4o years and will be competing again this year, says. His son, also Laurence, is one of the world's best axemen and will also be in action. Adamson has been in heavy training for the past couple of months, with good results at the Royal Easter Show in Sydney and almost a clean sweep of competitions at local shows. Chopping is in his blood. One great- grandfather and two grandfathers were axemen and his father (also an axeman) and mother met through woodchopping. His mother didn't compete but she's quite handy when a barrow load of wood is required, Adamson says.
Adamson's Australian team is young, with a few 17 and i8-year-old first-timers and a couple in their second year in the team. Barrett's Kiwi team is also young, with a few members still at school. Barrett has also been chopping since he was young. His great-grandparents, grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles, cousins, brothers and sisters and even his in-laws are all involved in the sport. His approach to training for this big competition is simple: get fit and chop a lot. Adamson also knows the importance of fitness. He rides a bike and runs every week, saying an understanding of how to stay fit is one of the main differences between young axemen and those of generations past. And though the youngsters wear good old Dunlop Volleys on their feet for competition — just as their fathers and grandfathers did — they're using axes that are technologically more advanced than older versions and slightly heavier. So why the Volleys and cricket whites for this new generation of woodchoppers? The cricket whites as uniform are a tradition, originally a Melbourne's trains, trams and buses are an inexpensive and comfortable way to get to way of getting the bush axemen of times past out of their filthy work clothes. the Royal Melbourne Show.
