BRASS BRASS Adjudicator: Chris King BMus (Hons) MBA LRSM ATCL We are delighted to welcome Chris King to adjudicate the 2020 Portsmouth Music Festival brass section. Having started playing cornet at school and for local brass bands in Lincolnshire, Chris started his musical training at the Army Junior School of Music, Pirbright. Graduating with the Musician of the Year award he went on to win the prestigious Frank Wright Silver Medal as a pupil at Kneller Hall, Twickenham in the annual cornet soloist competition. Chris served as a cornet player in the Royal Artillery Band at Woolwich, and after active service in the first Gulf War he returned to Kneller Hall to complete his Bandmaster’s Course gaining a first-class honours Degree in Music. His next posting as Bandmaster with the Minden Band of the Queen’s Division saw him touring Pakistan, Kosovo, Bosnia and Iraq and several other great tourist destinations! Returning to the UK in 2006 Chris began his relationship with the Friary Guildford Brass Band as Musical Director. Through his leadership the band’s performances at national level contests has resulted in qualification for the National Brass Band Championships at the Royal Albert Hall for the last seven years. Chris has also conducted and adjudicated at several prestigious competitions in Denmark, Norway and Sweden and finished his time in the Army as Bandmaster of the Band of the Grenadier Guards. Chris currently works as a school Bursar in West London where he lives with his wife and two daughters. The Woods Trophy Will be presented for the most promising performance (ages 12 & under) in this section. The Denegri Cup Will be presented at the adjudicator’s discretion for the most inspiring teacher or performer in this section.
