A checklist is a simple method of keeping track of what coins are in your collection. You can take this checklist with you when you visit coin shows or your favorite coin shop. When kept upto date, you will know exactly what coins you have and what coins you need. A checklist is designed to be simple to use and comprehensive in scope. It is not meant to be an all-inclusive database of your collection that will keep track of such information as the grade of your coin, the date of purchase, the purchase price, etc. What Does This Checklist Include? This checklist includes coins made by the United States Mint that are available from your local bank or at a reasonable price from coin shops everywhere. This checklist does not include expensive series where a majority of the coins are priced over $100 (i.e. Morgan Dollars, gold coins, bullion coins, etc.). In certain instances, where it can be reasonably predicted that a coin series will continue over the next few years, future dates have been provided. In other instances where it is not certain what will be produced over the next few years, for example commemorative coinage, there are blank entries for you to write in the coins that you purchase. The checklist is organized by major divisions such as "Early Dimes (1796 – 1837)", "Classic Quarters (1892 – 1930)" or "Modern Dollars (1971 – Date)." Within each major division, every U.S. coin type is covered and subdivided by design variety where appropriate. For example, "Liberty Seated Quarters; Variety 1a: No Drapery; No Rays Rev; No Motto Over Eagle." Finally, every date and mint mark combination with significant die varieties is listed. This is not an all-inclusive list of errors and die varieties, but the most frequently collected ones are listed. How to Use This Checklist? Every time you acquire a coin you cross it off the checklist. A single line through the date is sufficient so that you can read the information that is below it. A pencil is the preferred writing instrument when updating your checklist because it allows you to easily erase the line that you drew if you make a mistake or sell that coin. Key Date coins (coins that are priced over $100 in any grade) are indicated in red. More Coin Collecting Information Online For more information on coin collecting please visit coins.about.com. WELCOME… Dear Collector, Coins reflect the culture and the times in which they were produced, and U.S. coins tell the story of America in a way that no other artifact can. Why? Because they have been used since the nation’s beginnings. Pathfinders and trendsetters – Benjamin Franklin, Robert E. Lee, Teddy Roosevelt, Marilyn Monroe – you, your parents and grandparents have all used coins. When you hold one in your hand, you’re holding a tangible link to the past. David M. Sundman, You can travel back to colonial America LCC President with a large cent, the Civil War with a two-cent piece, or to the beginning of America’s involvement in WWI with a Mercury dime. Every U.S. coin is an enduring legacy from our nation’s past! Have a plan for your collection When many collectors begin, they may want to collect everything, because all different coin types fascinate them. But, after gaining more knowledge and experience, they usually find that it’s good to have a plan and a focus for what they want to collect.
