It’sIt’s such almost a special time of year Spring here in the North Greetings!! as the sun shines brightly in the sky and the snow crystals sparkle. As the temperatures climb, there is also the smell of spring -- fresh willow bark for instance-- in the air. And today for the first time since September, we had the sunlight shining into our house. Being tuned into the present allows me to notice and appreciate these simple and spectacular moments. What are you tuned into? You might wonder, “What’s all this buzz about mindfulness?” You might even be telling yourself “It’s a lot of work and I really don’t have time for this.” Don’t worry, you’re not alone! It wasn't even all that long ago that health experts considered the mind and body to be pretty much unrelated. Not so much anymore, however. Over the past few decades there has been sufficient attention and resources spent in trying to understand how our physical and mental realms work together. According to experts, becoming more mindful can impact many areas of your life including your mood, habits, peace of mind, how you interact with others, how you perform in your workplace or physical activities, how you spend money and so much more. This is super exciting and important. To be more mindful means to be more aware -- more tuned into -- and accepting of your thoughts, feelings and actions in the present moment. But too often, mostly out of habit, we simply go through life doing things mechanically, or mindlessly. I refer this to as “automatic living.” Have you ever driven by your street turn or eaten something and couldn’t remember if you did, or gone into a room to get something and left without it? These are all acts of automatic living or mindlessness. No, we’re not losing our minds, or getting old. It’s just that our minds are so filled with ‘noises’ ofWhat the day if itthat were doing possible things towithout learn thinkingnew skills about with them ease, seems skills to that save allow energy you for to the cultivate things a radicallythat require different extra thought way of and working effort. with your mind?

Because of my own success with learning and practicing mindfulness, I’ve developed programs, and have seen over and over again how it liberates busy women from the burden of low mood, stress and exhaustion. I've seen the extraordinary consequences of their discovery that there is a way to live life more fully than they ever imagined. To learn more about how I help, give me a call or send me an email. Furthermore, studies have shown that by clearing your mind, focusing on one thing at a time, and creating a habit of being in the present moment at all times will dramatically increase your energy, health, mood, well-being, and overall enjoyment of life. More specifically you’ll: • gain back control of your attention, • recognize and reduce the harsh critical voice of self-judgment, • reduce the tendency to worry and brood about everything, • wake up to the small beauties and pleasures of the world, • learn to respond wisely and compassionately to the people and events that affect you. Aside from these powerful benefits, being mindful or ‘in the present moment’ awakens you to manyHot Tip!things you otherwise would miss as you go throughout your busy day.

To heighten your level of mindfulness, try bringing awareness to routine activities. It’s important to bring mindful practice to our everyday lives -- it’s not meant to be a burden -- it’sH OW:a simple way to help you live more fully. • Choose one routine activity

(brushing your teeth, washing dishes, cutting vegetables, getting dressed, leaving the house, making lunch...) that you do every day and commit to yourself• To keep that track you will bring to it, as best you can a fresh quality of deliberate moment -to - moment awareness. of your practice make a note of your practice and then put a check mark every day when you remember to be mindful of this activity. Please let me know if you have any questions about the activity, or if you’d like to share your successes and challenges. I am here to support you. To Your Success. The Sun obtained funding in late 2009 from the City of Dawson, YTG’s Heritage Branch and the Community Development Fund to conserve and archive early issues and make them available once again in the public domain. This is a great resource for students, writers and historians, and also for prospective tourists with an interest in Dawson City’s life. Each month, we are re-printing our front pages from 20 years ago as a souvenir of our lively history. If you want to see page 2 and beyond, check out our website. Past issues are available there for download. Go to http://klondikesun.com. More will be added periodically (heh) when we have time! In 1996, we became a bi-weekly. Should 20 Years Ago be a feature of every issue of the Sun from now on? Let us know.
