The role of a youth sports coach can be very rewarding, but can be challenging at times as well. We have included helpful information in this handbook to assist in making this an enjoyable season for you and your team. Our youth sports philosophy is to provide our youth with a positive athletic experience in a safe environment where fun, skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship lay its foundation. In addition, our youth sports programs is designed to encourage maximum participation by all team members; their development is far more important than the outcome of the game. Please be sure to remember you are dealing with children, in a child’s game, where the best motivation of all is enthusiasm, positive reinforcement and team success. If the experience is fun for you, it will also be fun for the kids on your team as well as their parents. -

June 1, 2020 AN OPEN LETTER FROM BIG TEN COMMISSIONER KEVIN WARREN On Monday, May 25, 2020, George Floyd, a proud Black man, was killed by a member of law enforcement in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Philando Castile, Emmett Till. The list goes on and on. Prior to joining the Big Ten Conference as Commissioner and relocating to Chicago, my family had lived full-time in the Minneapolis area for over 15 years as I worked as an executive with the Minnesota Vikings in the National Football League. Our kids were raised in Minnesota and attended school in Minnesota before leaving for college and the people of the great state of Minnesota are part of the fabric of our entire family. As a Black man, I pray every day for the health and safety of my wife and children, especially during interactions with law enforcement. We continue to see inequality and deep divide regarding how members of the Black community are treated compared to the rest of society and too often, the results have been horrific and senseless. Such racism and inequality are pervasive, not just endemic in law enforcement. Meaningful change will only occur if, as a nation, we are united, resilient and determined to create difficult, uncomfortable dialogue and take significant tangible action. We all need to strive to make the world a better place. One person, one family, one city, one state, one conference, one country. George Floyd’s death cannot be in vain. I have made the decision to create the Big Ten Conference Anti-Hate and Anti-Racism Coalition and invite student-athletes, coaches, athletic directors, chancellors, presidents and others to join me. -

The Fundamentals of Shooting the Basketball The objective of the offense in Basketball is accuracy of each attempted shot. Most players recognize this; but, only the better shooters learn how to practice correctly and work at improvement year round. Since most of this practice sessions are alone, every player must be his own critic. This means he\she must understand the proper mechanics that affect the success, or failure, of every shot. Every player must know his range and know what is a good shot. Therefore, before examining the techniques associated with the various shots, a good basketball player is expected to have in his arsenal, here are the principles at work in every scoring shot from anywhere on a basketball court. These are divided into two parts, the mental aspect and the physical aspect: 1. Mental. At no time is psychological conditioning more critical than when shooting the basketball in a game. Knowing when to shoot and being able to do it effectively under pressure distinguishes the great shooter from the ordinary. Regardless of how much he practices, or how well he conditions himself, only a modest amount of improvement is possible in speed, reflexes, or strength. History gives many examples of players able to achieve greatness despite mediocre physical talent. Usually, however, such successes are due to determination. a. Concentration: is the fixing of attention on the job at hand and is characteristic of every great athlete. Through continuous practice, good shooters develop their concentration to the extent that they are oblivious to every distraction. Ability to relax: is closely related to concentration. -

These statistics can have a large bearing and provide a lot of pressure on players as their every move can be analysed. Performance analysis in sport is a vital way of being able to track a team or individuals performance and more commonly used resource for player and team development. Discovering information such as this proves the importance of these types of analysis as with post competition video analysis a coach can reach a far more accurate analysis of the game leading to the ability to coach and correct the exact requirements of the team instead of their perceptions. A significant difference was found between winning and losing performances for different types of turnovers supporting current research that states that turnovers are not a valid predictor of match outcomes and that there is no specific type of turnover which can predict the outcome of a match as briefly mentioned in Curz and Tavares (1998). -

REPORT OF THE NCAA DIVISION I COUNCIL FEBRUARY 17, 2021, VIDEOCONFERENCE In an effort to connect NCAA Division I Council items to the NCAA pillars of academics, fairness and well-being, items included in this report have an identifying pillar. There is an additional pillar, operational, that is used to denote items that relate to maintaining a stable and efficient Division I. KEY ITEMS. 1. Extension of the Temporary Recruiting Dead Period. (Academics/Fairness/Well- Being/Operational) The NCAA Division I Council adopted emergency temporary legislation to extend the temporary recruiting dead period (as defined in NCAA Bylaw 13.02.5.5) in all sports through May 31. In addition, the Council committed to providing clarity regarding permissible recruiting activities beginning June 1 (e.g., campus visits, evaluations) as soon as possible, and not later than its April 14-15 meeting. The extension reflects the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and concerns regarding in-person interaction among prospective student-athletes, institutional staff, and student-athletes. Extending the recruiting dead period now provides the membership and prospective student-athletes with clarity regarding the status of permissible recruiting activities for the remainder of the spring 2021 academic term. 2. Legislative Action – NCAA Division I Proposal No. 2019-25 Adopted. (Fairness/Well- Being/Operational) Legislative actions taken by the Council are listed in Attachment A. Voting results are available in Attachment B. The Council removed Proposal No. 2019-25 from the table and adopted the legislation, which applies to bowl subdivision football and men’s and women’s basketball. The proposal specifies that the definition of an individual associated with a prospective student-athlete does not include an individual who maintained (or directed others to maintain) contact with a prospective student-athlete (or a prospective student-athlete’s relatives, legal guardians or coaches) only while employed in the athletics department at another four-year institution. -

Regarding physical fitness, a thorough study of the capacities that affect the development of team sports in different ages and gender is required since the demands are not equivalent. The objective of this paper was to characterize the physical-physiological demands of athletes in an aerobic and anaerobic test specific to basketball players, as well as the evolution of the variables according to age and gender. The research was carried out in 149 players from different training categories (n = 103 male; n = 46 female). The athletes performed two field tests that evaluated both aerobic capacity and lactic anaerobic capacity. Each athlete was equipped with an inertial device during the tests. Sixteen variables (equal in both tests) were analyzed. Three of them evaluated technical-tactical aspects, four variables of objective internal load, six kinematic variables of objective external load (two related to distance and four related to accelerometry) and three neuromuscular variables of objective external load. -

There is an additional pillar, operational, that is used to denote items that relate to maintaining a stable and efficient Division I. KEY ITEMS. 1. Season-of-Competition Waiver for Conferences and Institutions That Cancel or Suspend Spring Sport Seasons. (Fairness/Well-Being/Operational) The Division I Council approved a waiver permitting conferences and institutions that cancel or suspend seasons in spring sports to self-apply a season-of-competition waiver for their spring sport student-athletes, provided the following criteria are met: a. The student-athlete uses a season of competition in a spring sport during the 2020- 21 academic year; b. The student-athlete does not compete in more than three contests/dates of competition or 30% (whichever number is greater) of the maximum permissible contests/dates of competition as set forth in NCAA Division I Bylaw 17 in the applicable sport; c. The student-athlete is eligible for intercollegiate competition when they compete during the 2020-21 academic year; and d. The student-athlete and the institution’s team end competition by the selection date for the NCAA championship in the applicable sport and do not compete in postseason competition during the 2021 spring. Student-athletes in conferences and institutions that have canceled or suspended spring seasons will not have an opportunity for a meaningful participation experience during the 2021 spring. -

Additional information will be made available to the host on Teamworks, a collaborative website and mobile app. It is essential that each host institution staff member familiarize themselves with the information and policies included in this manual and available on Teamworks (Refer to Section No. 23). The NCAA considers this hosting opportunity a partnership between the host institution, facility, committee and the NCAA. The primary objective of everyone involved in the administration of the championship shall be to provide a memorable championship experience for each participating student-athlete, coach, institutional staff member and tournament attendee.
