DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Dear Friends, It has been a privilege and great pleasure to return to the Stanford Global Studies Division this year, which, under the extraordinary leadership of Professor Norman Naimark, has become a vibrant center for international and area studies on campus. The numbers alone speak to our continuing growth. In the past year, we hosted Jeremy M. Weinstein 26 visiting scholars from universities around the world, and sponsored 593 The Sakurako and William Fisher events covering topics as diverse as the psychology of democracy, interracial love Family Director of the Stanford in post-Apartheid South Africa, global warming in Bangladesh, and Beethoven’s Global Studies Division; influence in China. We supported 95 undergraduate and graduate courses to strengthen the university’s offerings on regional and global issues. SGS also Professor of Political Science; continued to provide funding for undergraduate and graduate students to gain Senior Fellow, Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies valuable skills and experience abroad, sponsoring 116 internships, as well as 268 research and language fellowships. In 2016-17, the first cohort of students graduated with a minor in human rights, and a total of 73 graduate and 72 undergraduate students completed degrees from SGS programs. The interest in regional and global issues at Stanford is high, and we are doing everything we can to keep pace with the demand. It is also a very exciting time to be at Stanford, where, under the new leadership of President Tessier-Lavigne, a campus-wide process is underway to consider new directions that will shape Stanford’s trajectory for years to come. In order to better position ourselves within the university at this unique moment, we undertook a division-wide effort to articulate major goals and objectives moving forward, both for the individual centers and the division. In particular, we identified several common priorities where a strategic investment by the division could have an impact broadly across the university: investing in a new curricular and co-curricular focus on global competencies to ensure that all Stanford undergraduates leave the university with substantive knowledge about the world, meaningful experiences abroad, and strong language skills; growing Stanford’s global expertise by increasing the number of faculty who focus on regional and global issues, supporting international research, and bringing the best young scholars on global and regional issues to campus as postdoctoral scholars; and innovating in how we extend our reach beyond Stanford, building on the work continued on next page 3 DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE we are already doing through our Title VI programs with Award of Merit for her role in contributing to the success of community colleges and high schools in California.     Acta Polonica Monashiensis Volume 2 Number 2 December 2002 Wojciech Kajtoch Introduction to "Solaris" Translated from Polish by Lech Keller Stanislaw Lem is unquestionably one of the greatest authors of SF in the global history of this genre. Thus inclusion of his works to the reading list1 is certainly a gesture, which acknowledges the reality. One could also regard this inclusion as an ennoblement of a genre, so far virtually ignored by the school administration because of its "lowly" origin (i.e. Verne's fantastic novels, targeted mostly for young people, and American "pulp" SF magazines of the 1930s). There are also different claims, namely that "Solaris" (and this novel is virtually unanimously regarded as the best work of Lem, the work, which introduced his works to the list of "must-read" books), is not really SF. The main reason is that "Solaris" can be read and interpreted as a psychological novel, thus in this context Lem is a "real", i.e. "mainstream" writer, actually not much interested in science and technology. In short: Lem is strictly speaking a "high brow" writer, rather than a "lowly" SF writer. It should be also noted the lack of regard to the cultural background (or its arbitrary selection), which was frequent in the interpretation of the post-Second World War literature, and common in the Polish secondary schools habit of reading every literary text as a direct reflection and appraisal of the real world. This way we have compiled a catalogue of the dangers threatening analysis of "Solaris', as it is done at the classes of Polish literature.

Elsewhere in the classroom, built by logistics REIT Prologis, Inc. (NYSE: PLD) in collaboration with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, students prepare packages for shipping and complete logistics modules online. Lead teacher Nicolas Acosta, Jr. says the skills his students are learning will ensure they “hit the ground running” when the time comes to enter the workforce. “We’re making sure we have the talent to secure the future,” he adds. The Prologis Trade and Logistics Lab, as the space is formally known, officially opened in May. It expands upon an existing logistics training program at the school and is a key part of Prologis’ Community Workforce Initiative (CWI). Launched in 2018, the initiative is seen as an extension of the company’s commitment to deliver superior customer service by strengthening local communities. Prologis collaborates with local workforce programs to provide mentorship, skills training, internships, and job placement services for people interested in pursuing careers in logistics, distribution, and transportation. Prologis Chairman and CEO Hamid Moghadam says the idea for CWI came from the REIT’s customers.
