  • 1959 Jazz: a Historical Study and Analysis of Jazz and Its Artists and Recordings in 1959
GELB, GREGG, DMA. 1959 Jazz: A Historical Study and Analysis of Jazz and Its Artists and Recordings in 1959. (2008) Directed by Dr. John Salmon. 69 pp. Towards the end of the 1950s, about halfway through its nearly 100-year history, jazz evolution and innovation increased at a faster pace than ever before. By 1959, it was evident that two major innovative styles and many sub-styles of the major previous styles had recently emerged. Additionally, all earlier practices were in use, making a total of at least ten actively played styles in 1959. It would no longer be possible to denote a jazz era by saying one style dominated, such as it had during the 1930s’ Swing Era. This convergence of styles is fascinating, but, considering that many of the recordings of that year represent some of the best work of many of the most famous jazz artists of all time, it makes 1959 even more significant. There has been a marked decrease in the jazz industry and in stylistic evolution since 1959, which emphasizes 1959’s importance in jazz history. Many jazz listeners, including myself up until recently, have always thought the modal style, from the famous 1959 Miles Davis recording, Kind of Blue, dominated the late 1950s. However, a few of the other great and stylistically diverse recordings from 1959 were John Coltrane’s Giant Steps, Ornette Coleman’s The Shape of Jazz To Come, and Dave Brubeck’s Time Out, which included the very well- known jazz standard Take Five. My research has found many more 1959 recordings of equally unique artistic achievement.

  • ʻso This Guy Walks Into a Bar...ʼ - Great Intros I Have Known (Blog 3/8/11)
ʻSo This Guy Walks Into A Bar...ʼ - Great Intros I Have Known (Blog 3/8/11) I recently read an interview (http://www.jazzwax.com/2009/04/interview-billy-taylor- part-1.html) with jazz piano great Billy Taylor, reposted as a memorial (Taylor died on December 29th of last year). In it, Taylor mentions how, as a young pianist, he used the chord voicing from Duke Ellingtonʼs piano intro to ʻIn A Mellow Toneʼ as his ʻbasis for harmonizing behind horn playersʼ and ʻbuilt a whole style on that approachʼ which eventually got him a gig with Ben Webster. This reminded me of how piano intros in the jazz tradition often encapsulate important concepts, and how often theyʼve helped me learn and re-learn chord voicings. I originally learned the ʻMellow Toneʼ intro on quartet gig with tenor saxophonist Alex Stewart, who gave me a written score for it. Itʼs been more than ten years since that gig, but thanks to Alexʼs score, Iʼve played the intro from memory many times when the tune has come up on gigs. The Taylor interview, along with a revisiting of the original recording, made me aware that while my memory has retained the chord structure of the intro, Iʼve been doing a different voicing than Duke. The intro in its original form can be turned into a useful exercise for practicing 3-7-9 voicings of dominant chords in all keys, descending chromatically from A flat. Here, in no particular order, are piano intros which have contained valuable lessons to which Iʼve returned over and over: - The Richie Powell intro to Clifford Brownʼs Joy Spring: this is a kind of etude in the major 6th voicing, which Powell moves through seven different transpositions before running a series of major 6ths alternating with dominant chords (Eb6-D7-Db6-C7b9) which, coincidentally, form the basis of another great intro: - Wynton Kellyʼs intro to ʻOn Green Dolphin Streetʼ on Kelly Blue.

LaBudde Department of Special Collections NOT TO BE USED FOR PUBLICATION BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Robert “Bob” Brookmeyer enjoyed a long, distinguished career in music as a composer, arranger, multi-instrumentalist and educator. Born December 19, 1929, in Kansas City, Missouri, he was inspired by the unique jazz style of his hometown, noting a 1941 performance by Count Basie at the Tower Theater as a life-changing event. While his affinity for big bands was to be his calling card, Brookmeyer was also intrigued by the musical language of bebop, transcribing by ear early recordings of Charlie Parker, who had left Kansas City for New York in the early 1940s. Brookmeyer studied piano and composition at the Kansas City Conservatory (which became part of what is now the University of Missouri-Kansas City), winning the Carl Busch Award for Choral Composition. In 1986 Brookmeyer received the UMKC Conservatory Alumni Award, and in 1991 earned an honorary doctorate in music from UMKC. Moving to New York in the early 1950s, Brookmeyer’s early professional credits include time with the big bands of Tex Beneke, Ray McKinley and Claude Thornhill, as well as freelance work with Coleman Hawkins, Pee Wee Russell, Ben Webster, Charles Mingus and Teddy Charles.
