Reader's Guide to the Mountain Men of the American West
Reader©s Guide to the Mountain Men of the American West Antoine Clement, by Alfred Jacob Miller Compiled by Stuart Wier October 25, 2010 This is a guide to the best books about the mountain men of the American west which I know about. Anyone can find a book here to suit them: casual readers, students, enthusiasts, reenactors, and historians. I include a few less distinguished books, too, when they are the only thing about a topic. For some fifteen years -- roughly speaking, 1823 to 1838 and beyond -- the western U.S. was the domain of the mountain men, fur trappers who spent years traveling and living in the wilderness. Long before wagon trains, settlers, gold rushes, cavalry, Indian wars, cowboys, wild west towns, or railroads, mountain men were the first from the U.S. to see the Rocky Mountains and the lands from the plains to the Pacific. Their life was highly free and adventuresome, and often dangerous and short, lived in a shining wilderness. Where to begin? Many books, many choices. For a readable and short introduction try Give Your Heart to the Hawks by Winfred Blevins. For detailed histories try A Life Wild and Perilous by Robert M. Utley or the classic history Across the Wide Missouri by Bernard DeVoto. Or try some of the best biographies, such as Westering Man The Life of Joseph Walker by Bil Gilbert and Jedediah Smith and the Opening of the West by Dale L. Morgan. For adventures or "camp fire tales" try the personal journals and narratives written by some of the mountain men themselves. -

Albert Gallatin: Champion of American Democracy Friendship Hill National Historic Site Education Guide Post-Visit Activities Post-Visit Activities Post-Visit Activity #1 – Comic Strip Directions: Have students look over several comic strips in the newspaper and look up the definition of the word cartoon. Have them draw or illustrate their own comic strip about Albert Gallatin. The students can base their comic strip on their visit to Friendship Hill, and what they have read and learned about Albert Gallatin. Post-Visit Activity #2 – Headline News Directions: After studying about the Lewis and Clark expedition and Albert Gallatin, have the students make up headlines about the event. Write several of the headlines on the classroom board. Have the students pick a headline and write a short newspaper account about it. The students may read their news articles to the class. Post-Visit Activity #3 – Whiskey Rebellion Flag Directions: The angry farmers in 1794 designed a Whiskey Rebellion flag with symbols that expressed their feelings. Have the students construct or draw their own flags with symbols, designs and logos that express their feelings. Display the flags in the classroom. Have the students examine each other’s flags and see if they can tell what the flags mean. Post-Visit Activity #4 – Artist Poster Directions: Have the students design a poster of young Albert Gallatin using the objects that symbolize his early involvement in Southwestern Pennsylvania and the United States government. Post-Visit Activity #5 – Albert Gallatin Bulletin Board Directions: Throughout his 68 years of public service Albert Gallatin became friends with many influential people. -

World Stage Curriculum Washington Irving’s Tour 1832 TEACHER You have been given a completed world stage and a world stage that your students can complete. This world stage is a snapshot of the world with Oklahoma, Cherokee Nation and Muscogee Creek Nation, at its center. The Pawnee, Comanche, and Kiowa were out to the west. Europe is to the north and east. Africa is to the south and east. South America is south and a bit east. Asia and the Pacific are to the west. Use a globe to show your students that these directions are accurate. Students - Directions 1. Your teacher will assign one of these actors to you. 2. After research, note the age of the actor in 1832, the year that Irving, Ellsworth, Pourtalès, and Latrobe took a Tour on the Oklahoma prairies. 3. Place the name and age of the actor in the right place on the World Stage. 4. Write a biographical sketch about the actor. 5. Make a report to the class, sharing the biographical sketch, the age of the actor in 1832, and the place the actor was at that time. 6. Listen to all the other reports and place all of the actors in their correct locations with their correct ages in 1832. Students - Information 1. The majority of the characters can be found in your public library in biographies and encyclopedia. You will need a library card to access this information. There is enough information about each actor for a biographical sketch. 2. Other actors can be found on the Internet. -

PUBLIC LAW 105±290ÐOCT. 27, 1998 WYOMING NATIONAL HISTORIC TRAILS INTERPRETIVE CENTER ASSISTANCE 112 STAT. 2782 PUBLIC LAW 105±290ÐOCT. 27, 1998 Public Law 105±290 105th Congress An Act Oct. 27, 1998 To authorize the Secretary of the Interior to provide assistance to the National [H.R. 2186] Historic Trails Interpretive Center in Casper, Wyoming. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of 16 USC 1244 the United States of America in Congress assembled, note. SECTION 1. FINDINGS AND PURPOSES. (a) FINDINGS.ÐThe Congress finds and declares the following: (1) The City of Casper, Wyoming, is nationally significant as the only geographic location in the western United States where four congressionally recognized historic trails (the Oregon Trail, the Mormon Trail, the California Trail, and the Pony Express Trail), the Bridger Trail, the Bozeman Trail, and many Indian routes converged. (2) The historic trails that passed through the Casper area are a distinctive part of the national character and possess important historical and cultural values representing themes of migration, settlement, transportation, and commerce that shaped the landscape of the West. (3) The Bureau of Land Management has not yet estab- lished a historic trails interpretive center in Wyoming or in any adjacent State to educate and focus national attention on the history of the mid-19th century immigrant trails that crossed public lands in the Intermountain West. (4) At the invitation of the Bureau of Land Management, the City of Casper and the National Historic Trails Foundation, Inc. (a nonprofit corporation established under the laws of the State of Wyoming) entered into a memorandum of under- standing in 1992, and have since signed an assistance agree- ment in 1993 and a cooperative agreement in 1997, to create, manage, and sustain a National Historic Trails Interpretive Center to be located in Casper, Wyoming, to professionally interpret the historic trails in the Casper area for the benefit of the public. -
