Benedict Department of History Graduate Program Professor Kevin Boyle ABSTRACT This work explores how German immigrants influenced the reshaping of American citizenship following the Civil War and emancipation. It takes a new approach to old questions: How did African American men achieve citizenship rights under the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments? Why were those rights only inconsistently protected for over a century? German Americans had a distinctive effect on the outcome of Reconstruction because they contributed a significant number of votes to the ruling Republican Party, they remained sensitive to European events, and most of all, they were acutely conscious of their own status as new American citizens. Drawing on the rich yet largely untapped supply of German-language periodicals and correspondence in Missouri, Ohio, and Washington, D.C., I recover the debate over citizenship within the German-American public sphere and evaluate its national ramifications. Partisan, religious, and class differences colored how immigrants approached African American rights. Yet for all the divisions among German Americans, their collective response to the Revolutions of 1848 and the Franco-Prussian War and German unification in 1870 and 1871 left its mark on the opportunities and disappointments of Reconstruction. -

The War against German Culture My topic today is “the war against German culture.” It is a topic that probably impacts many of you, given the fact that Missouri was settled to a large extent by Germans, in fact, according to Prof. Don Heinrich Tolzmann, Missouri is almost 40% German today. Can I have a show of hands as to how many of you in the audience are of German ancestry? The topic impacts me, since I am a third generation American of half Germanic ancestry. I was born in Newark, New Jersey, in a hospital founded as the “Newark German Hospital” and now known as “Clara Maass Hospital” after its most famous nurse, who gave her life trying to help Walter Reed find a cure for yellow fever. The reason that the hospital is no longer named “Newark German” is the war against German language and culture, which continues to this very day. Things Germans were not always negatively stereotyped. Let me ask you a few questions, the answers might amaze you: 1) When was the first anti-slavery protest drafted, and what language was it in? (German, 1688 By Franz Daniel Pastorius in Germantown, Pa) 2) Who founded the first public library in New York? (A German refugee turned newspaper publisher named Oswald Ottendorfer and founded the Ottendorfer Library in 1884.) 3) Who founded the first legal aid society in the US? (Germans: Deutscher Rechts-Schutz Verein (German Legal Aid Society), was incorporated in New York City in 1876) Now, the term German today has many implications to many people. -

Albert Gallatin: Champion of American Democracy Friendship Hill National Historic Site Education Guide Post-Visit Activities Post-Visit Activities Post-Visit Activity #1 – Comic Strip Directions: Have students look over several comic strips in the newspaper and look up the definition of the word cartoon. Have them draw or illustrate their own comic strip about Albert Gallatin. The students can base their comic strip on their visit to Friendship Hill, and what they have read and learned about Albert Gallatin. Post-Visit Activity #2 – Headline News Directions: After studying about the Lewis and Clark expedition and Albert Gallatin, have the students make up headlines about the event. Write several of the headlines on the classroom board. Have the students pick a headline and write a short newspaper account about it. The students may read their news articles to the class. Post-Visit Activity #3 – Whiskey Rebellion Flag Directions: The angry farmers in 1794 designed a Whiskey Rebellion flag with symbols that expressed their feelings. Have the students construct or draw their own flags with symbols, designs and logos that express their feelings. Display the flags in the classroom. Have the students examine each other’s flags and see if they can tell what the flags mean. Post-Visit Activity #4 – Artist Poster Directions: Have the students design a poster of young Albert Gallatin using the objects that symbolize his early involvement in Southwestern Pennsylvania and the United States government. Post-Visit Activity #5 – Albert Gallatin Bulletin Board Directions: Throughout his 68 years of public service Albert Gallatin became friends with many influential people. -

World Stage Curriculum Washington Irving’s Tour 1832 TEACHER You have been given a completed world stage and a world stage that your students can complete. This world stage is a snapshot of the world with Oklahoma, Cherokee Nation and Muscogee Creek Nation, at its center. The Pawnee, Comanche, and Kiowa were out to the west. Europe is to the north and east. Africa is to the south and east. South America is south and a bit east. Asia and the Pacific are to the west. Use a globe to show your students that these directions are accurate. Students - Directions 1. Your teacher will assign one of these actors to you. 2. After research, note the age of the actor in 1832, the year that Irving, Ellsworth, Pourtalès, and Latrobe took a Tour on the Oklahoma prairies. 3. Place the name and age of the actor in the right place on the World Stage. 4. Write a biographical sketch about the actor. 5. Make a report to the class, sharing the biographical sketch, the age of the actor in 1832, and the place the actor was at that time. 6. Listen to all the other reports and place all of the actors in their correct locations with their correct ages in 1832. Students - Information 1. The majority of the characters can be found in your public library in biographies and encyclopedia. You will need a library card to access this information. There is enough information about each actor for a biographical sketch. 2. Other actors can be found on the Internet. -

Addison Brown (21 February 1830-9 April 1913) was born in West Newbury, Massachusetts to Addison Brown (1796-1883) and Catherine Babson Griffin Brown (1805-1884). Brown attended Harvard Law School and graduated in 1854. He married Mary C. Barret (24 December 1827-26 April 1887) in 1856. He worked as a lawyer in a private practice in New York City until 1881 when President James A. Garfield appointed him to the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. In 1891, he helped establish the New York Botanical Garden. -

Landmarks Preservation Commission • November 9, 1976, Number 5 LP"·0924 STUYVESANT POLYCLINIC HOSPITAL, 137 Second Avenue, Borough of Manhattan. Built 1883-84; architect William Schickel. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Mep Block 464, Lot 37 in part consisting of the land on which the described building is situated. On March 23, 1976, the landmarks Preserv3tion Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmerk of the Stuyvesant Polyclinic Hospit~l and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 1). The hearing was continued to May II, 1976 (Item No. 1). Both hearings had been duly advertised in ac~ordance with the provisions of law. ·A total of six witnesses at both hearings; including the representative of the Cabrini Health Care Center, spoke in favor of designation. There ware no speakers in opposition to designation; however, four witnesses asked that the adjacent Ottendorfer Library be designated simultaneously with the Stuyvesant Polyclinic Hosp ita 1. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The Stuyvesant Polyclinic, formerly the German Dispensary, 'was designed by William Schickel, a Germen-born architect, in an interesting exuberant version of the neo-ltal ian Renal.ssance style. Swagerty COLUMBIA The Magazine of Northwest History, Summer 2002: Vol. 16, No. 2 To lovers of the picturesque it is a source of keen regret that the Blanket Indian, the most striking and conspicuous figure this country has ever produced, is passing. And by this I mean the Indian who formerly wore a red blanket, a beaded buckskin shirt and leggins, a gorgeous war bonnet, and who painted his face, his hands and his horse in a manner wonderful to behold. Shields from Blanket Indians of the Northwest, 1921 A veteran of the Indian wars, Shields, like many of his contemporaries, was convinced that the American Indian was a "vanishing race," a victim of "Progress" and the inevitable sweep of Western civilization over a once-proud people now reservation-bound and without the warrior heroes of yesteryear. Red Cloud, Sitting Bull, American Horse, Geronimo, and Chief JosePh— "The Noblest Roman of Them All"—were all gone, rePlaced by a generation of hunters-turned- farmers, and Poor ones at that. Had Shields looked carefully he would have seen many "blanket Indians" at powwows, giveaways, potlatches, funerals, saints' days, parades, rodeos, and in more traditional households on and off reservations. Writing in 1933, Luther Standing Bear, a notable Sioux, reminisced in his autobiography, Land of the Spotted Eagle: Many an Indian has accomplished his own personal salvation by "going back to the blanket." The Indian blanket or buffalo robe, a true American garment and worn with the significance of language; covered beneath it, is the prototype of the American Indian, one of the bravest attempts ever made by man on this continent to rise to the heights of true humanity.
