This talk, given at ‘Past and Present of Radical Sexual Politics’, the Fifth Meeting of the Seminar ‘Socialism and Sexuality’, Amsterdam October 3-4, 2003, is part of my ongoing research into sexual and political utopianism. Some of the material on pp.1-4 has been re- used and more fully developed in my later article, Speaking Desire: anarchism and free love as utopian performance in fin de siècle Britain, 2009. This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License. ‘Together we will make a new world’: Sexual and Political Utopianism by Judy Greenway By reaching for the moon, it is said, we learn to reach. Utopianism, or ‘social dreaming’, is the education of desire for a better world, and therefore a necessary part of any movement for social change.1 In this paper I use examples from my research on anarchism, gender and sexuality in Britain from the 1880s onwards, to discuss changing concepts of free love and the relationship between sexual freedom and social transformation, especially for women. All varieties of anarchism have in common a rejection of the state, its laws and institutions, including marriage. The concept of ‘free love' is not static, however, but historically situated. In the late nineteenth century, hostile commentators linked sexual to political danger. Amidst widespread public discussion of marriage, anarchists had to take a position, and anarchist women placed the debate within a feminist framework. Many saw free love as central to a critique of capitalism and patriarchy, the basis of a wider struggle around such issues as sex education, contraception, and women's economic and social independence. -

Susan Faludi), with texts such as Camille Pagha's Sexual Personae intensqing the reaction. Beyond the women's movemenf we are witnesses to a growing sense of intolerante, made manifest in xenophobic attitudes and racist attacks. In The Nature of Fascism, published in 1991, Roger Grifñn spends his fúst chapter dwelling on the "conundrum" of fascism, so temed because of the lack of consensus as to how fascism might be defined. We do not propose to consider the complexities involved here but will rnake use of Griíñn's working definition: "Fascism is a genus of political ideology whose mythc core in its various permutations is a pahgenetic fom of populist ultranationalism." (Grif6n 1991,26). For our particular purpose, we wish to focus on the concept of palingenesis (fkom palin - again, anew; and genesis - creation, biríh). Fascism promulgated the idea of rebiríh: the movement would bring about "a new national community", one which would draw on, " - where posible, traditions which had supposedly remained uncontaminated by degenerative forces and whose cohesion was assured by new institutions, organisations and practices based on a new political hierarchy and a new heroic ethos" (Griíñn 1991, 45). Women became conspicuous by their absence within the new phallocentnc hierarchy. The new fascist man (hornofmcistus) wodd be intent on saaiñcing himseíf to the higher needs of the nation. In Male Fantasies Klaus Theweleit drew on case-studies produced on a number of individuals who played an active part in German proto-fascism. -

230 A Psychoanalytic Interpretation of Pedagogical Presence Between the Teacher’s Past and the Student’s Future: A Psychoanalytic Interpretation of Pedagogical Presence Trent Davis St. Mary’s University INTRODUCTION The rise and spread of totalitarianism in Europe in the twentieth century would forever haunt Hannah Arendt. She could never stop thinking about the destruction and pain it caused and whether there were political safeguards that could prevent anything like it from ever happening again. The difficulty with trying to secure such prevention, however, as she explains in The Human Condition, is that while there is a “basic unreliability”1 to people as individuals, there is also an “impossibility of foretelling the consequences”2 of any collective action. The awkward truth, in other words, is that the past can never guarantee the future. This year’s conference theme calls our attention to this Arendtian “gap” and what it might mean for the philosophy of education today. At first blush it appears to be merely debilitating to our educational hopes (if teaching and learning cannot secure the future, what can?). But in his recent book The Beautiful Risk of Education,3 Gert Biesta asks his readers to see both “weakness” and “risk” as not just acceptable, but even necessary, components of education. Given the current obsession with “strong” forms of teaching and learning that require measurable benchmarks for assessment, it is not hard to imagine why readers might be resistant to this request. Biesta frames his argument early in the text by offering a number of important distinctions. In the prologue he explains his conceptualization of the three “domains” of education. -

A Brief History of the British Psychoanalytical Society
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BRITISH PSYCHOANALYTICAL SOCIETY Ken Robinson When Ernest Jones set about establishing psychoanalysis in Britain, two intertwining tasks faced him: establishing the reputation of psychoanalysis as a respectable pursuit and defining an identity for it as a discipline that was distinct from but related to cognate disciplines. This latter concern with identity would remain central to the development of the British Society for decades to come, though its inflection would shift as the Society sought first to mark out British psychoanalysis as having its own character within the International Psychoanalytical Association, and then to find a way of holding together warring identities within the Society. Establishing Psychoanalysis: The London Society Ernest Jones’ diary for 1913 contains the simple entry for October 30: “Ψα meeting. Psycho-med. dinner” (Archives of the British Psychoanalytical Society, hereafter Archives). This was the first meeting of the London Psychoanalytical Society. In early August Jones had returned to London from ignominious exile in Canada after damaging accusations of inappropriate sexual conduct in relation to children. Having spent time in London and Europe the previous year, he now returned permanently, via Budapest where from June he had received analysis from Ferenczi. Once in London he wasted no time in beginning practice as a psychoanalyst, seeing his first patient on the 14th August (Diary 1913, Archives), though he would soon take a brief break to participate in what would turn out to be a troublesome Munich Congress in September (for Jones’s biography generally, see Maddox [2006]). Jones came back to a London that showed a growing interest in unconscious phenomena and abnormal psychology. -

This total war elevated British psychoanal- ysis to a role not enjoyed anywhere else in the world. Under the shock of bombing and evacuation, exiled continental analysts such as Anna Freud (Sigmund Freud’s daughter) and Melanie Klein and native analysts such as John Bowlby (the “British Dr. Spock”) and Donald Winnicott were called upon to treat a diverse group of men, women, and children. Children occupied a privileged position in this expert work. They came to be seen, on the one hand, as vulnerable and in need of protection; on the other hand, as anxious, aggressive subjects requiring control. The war proved a decisive moment for the history of psychoanalysis, and, in turn, its evolving theories and practices helped produce new expectations for selfhood, citizenship, mental health, and the emergent social democracy. While scholars of World War I have highlighted the effects of shellshock on culture and society, we have yet to understand how the brutalities of World War II, and the theories of selfhood developed under its guise, reshaped postwar Britain. By examining together both the ideas and practices of child psychoanalysts and their wide impact on public opinion and social policy, The War Inside reconstructs this essential social and cultural legacy of World War II. -

Downloaded by [New York University] at 03:54 14 August 2016 Journeys in Psychoanalysis Spanning six decades, this collection, Journeys in Psychoanalysis: The selected works of Elizabeth Spillius, traces the arc of her career from anthropology and entering psychoanalysis ‘almost by accident’, to becoming one of her generation’s leading scholars of Melanie Klein. Born in 1924 in Ontario, Canada, Elizabeth arrived at the London School of Economics for postgraduate studies in the 1950s and soon embarked on a ground- breaking study of family life in the East End of London that produced a PhD and her fi rst book, Family and Social Network, under her maiden name Elizabeth Bott. Published by the Tavistock Institute in 1957, it remains one of the most infl uential works published on the sociology of the family. These papers are a testament to the luminous intellect and understated compassion that Elizabeth has always brought to her work. They vividly map not just the evolution of Elizabeth’s career but the development of Melanie Klein’s thought, often drawing in compelling fashion on the writer’s own experiences with her patients. Each is written with the clarity and concision that makes diffi cult concepts eminently comprehensible to psychoanalysts, psychoanalytic psychother- apists and laymen alike. Elizabeth Spillius studied general psychology at the University of Toronto (1945), social anthropology at the University of Chicago, the London School of Economics and the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations (1945–1957) and psychoanalysis at the Institute of Psychoanalysi s in London (1956 to the present). Arthur Morrison, the 'Jago', and the Realist
ARTHUR MORRISON, THE ‘JAGO’, AND THE REALIST REPRESENTATION OF PLACE Submitted in Fulfillment for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy UCL Department of English Language and Literature Eliza Cubitt 2015 ABSTRACT In vitriolic exchanges with the critic H.D. Traill, Arthur Morrison (1863-1945) argued that the term ‘realist’ was impossible to define and must be innately subjective. Traill asserted that Morrison’s A Child of the Jago (1896) was a failure of realism, conjuring a place that ‘never did and never could exist.’ And yet, by 1900, the East End slum fictionalised in Morrison’s novel had been supplanted by the realist mythology of his account: ‘Jago’ had become, and remains, an accepted term to describe the real historical slum, the Nichol. This thesis examines Morrison’s contribution to the late-Victorian realist representation of the urban place. It responds to recent renewed interest about realism in literary studies, and to revived debates surrounding marginal writers of urban literature. Opening with a biographical study, I investigate Morrison’s fraught but intimate lifelong relationship with the East End. Morrison’s unadorned prose represents the late-Victorian East End as a site of absolute ordinariness rather than absolute poverty. Eschewing the views of outsiders, Morrison re- placed the East End. Since the formation of The Arthur Morrison Society in 2007, Morrison has increasingly been the subject of critical examination. Studies have so frequently focused on evaluating the reality behind Morrison’s fiction that his significance to late-nineteenth century “New Realism” and the debates surrounding it has been overlooked. This thesis redresses this gap, and states that Morrison’s work signifies an artistic and temporal boundary of realism.
