Einführung Was ist Zeit? Der Hl. Augustinus behauptet: „Wenn niemand mich danach fragt, weiß ich’s, will ich’s aber einem Fragenden erklären, weiß ich’s nicht“ (Augustinus 2004: 553). In der Tat, Zeit ist ein schwieriger Begriff zu definieren und sogar zu verstehen. Man weiß auch nicht, ob diese eine menschliche Erfindung, womöglich eine Illusion, oder „an essential ingredient of the universe“ (Davis u. Hersh 2005: 189) ist. Obwohl man so wenig darüber weiß, ist Zeit ein sehr wichtiges Element des Lebens der Menschen. Sie ist sogar kostbarer als Geld, denn im Gegensatz zu Letzterem, das man verdienen, sparen und leihen kann, kann niemand mehr Zeit bekommen oder diese sammeln. Es ist nicht einmal möglich, in die Vergangenheit zu reisen, um einen Moment des eigenen Lebens noch einmal zu erleben oder einen Blick in die Zukunft zu werfen, obwohl viele das möchten. Der einzige Weg, dies zu tun, wäre durch eine Zeitreise. Die Idee, sich in der Zeit vorwärts oder rückwärts bewegen zu können, gab es schon immer, tatsächlich finden sich Spuren dieses Themas in uralten Legenden und Geschichten aus verschiedenen Erdteilen. Zum Beispiel erzählt das indische Epos Mahābhārata, dass König Kakudmi in den Himmel kommt, um Brahma zu treffen, doch bei seiner Rückkehr entdeckt er, dass viele Jahre vergangen sind (Gleick 2016: 30-31). Ab dem 14. Jahrhundert wurde das Thema in der Literatur verwendet und ist heutzutage in Romanen aller Genres, aus jeder Nation, in jeder Sprache und für jedes Zielpublikum zu finden. Im 20. Jahrhundert wurde das Konzept der Zeitreise auch von Drehbuchautoren von Filmen und Fernsehserien, Cartoonisten und Entwicklern von Videospielen übernommen. Nach dem großen Erfolg des Themas, insbesondere im Bereich der Literatur und der Filme, hat es viele Wissenschaftler dazu veranlasst, die Möglichkeiten der Zeitreise zu untersuchen. Das Thema hat kürzlich auch Philosophen interessiert, z.B. David Lewis, die zeigen wollen, ob die Zeitreise mit den Gesetzen der Logik vereinbar ist (Gott 2002: 5; Markosian 2014: upag.; Nahin 2011: viii-ix). Diese Masterarbeit besteht aus drei Teilen: Im ersten wird die Zeitreise definiert und es werden alle Theorien über die Methoden, die Modelle und die Paradoxa der Zeitreise erläutert. Der zweite Teil widmet sich der Zeitreiseliteratur – sowohl für Erwachsene als auch für Kinder und Jugendliche –, um ihre Merkmale und ihre historische Entwicklung in vier Phasen zu beschreiben und es wird auch versucht, die Besonderheiten jeder dieser Phasen zu erfassen. Im dritten Teil findet 3 die vergleichende Untersuchung bzw. Analyse zweier ausgewählter Buchreihen für Jugendliche statt, d.h. die der Edelstein-Trilogie von Kerstin Gier und die der ersten zwei Bände der Future Shock-Trilogie von Elizabeth Briggs. Das Ziel ist es, Ähnlichkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen den beiden herauszuheben, insbesondere im Hinblick auf das Thema Zeitreise. 2. Die Zeitreise und die dazugehörenden theoretischen Erklärungen 2.1 Definition der Zeitreise Bevor das Konzept von Zeitreise erklärt wird, müssen einige wichtige Theorien beschrieben werden. Die Zeit ist in drei Segmente unterteilt – Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft –, die vor allem dazu dienen, einem Ereignis eine zeitliche Zuordnung zu geben: Wenn es jetzt geschieht, ist es ein gegenwärtiges Ereignis; wenn es schon vorbei ist, ist es ein vergangenes Ereignis; wenn es noch passieren muss, ist es ein zukünftiges Ereignis. Diese Unterteilung ist jedoch Gegenstand der Diskussion in der Philosophie. McTaggart, zum Beispiel, unterscheidet zwei Theorien, nach welcher man alle Ereignisse in der Zeit ordnen kann: Die A-Theorie definiert die „A-Reihe“ eine Reihe von Momenten bzw. Ereignissen „running from the far past through the near past to the present, and then from the present to the, near future and the far future“ (McTaggart 1908: 458). Die B-Theorie definiert hingegen die „B-Reihe“ die Reihe von Momenten bzw. Ereignissen „which runs from earlier to later“ (McTaggart 1908: 458). In der A-Theorie ist die zeitliche Position eines Ereignisses in Bezug auf die Gegenwart bzw. auf der Perspektive des Betrachters definiert: Ein zukünftiges Ereignis rückt mit der Zeit immer näher an den Betrachter heran, dann wird es gegenwärtig und später noch vergangen, schließlich rückt es immer weiter weg. In der B-Theorie wird sie nur in Bezug auf ein anderes Ereignis beschrieben: Ein Ereignis kann einem anderen vorausgehen, ihm folgen oder gleichzeitig mit ihm stattfinden und ihre Beziehung bleibt immer gleich. Im Laufe der Zeit haben sich viele Wissenschaftler für die eine oder andere Theorie entschieden und heutzutage ist die B-Theorie die mit den meisten Anhängern (Markosian 2014: unpag.; Micklethwait 2012: 5-6, 42; Zimmerman 2005: 401-402; McTaggart 1908: 458-461). Eine extreme Form der A-Theorie ist der Präsentismus, d.h. die Theorie, nach welcher nur gegenwärtige Objekte bzw. Ereignisse existieren und real sind, die vergangenen und zukünftigen hingegen nicht. Es handelt sich also um eine Weltanschauung, die auf Dynamik beruht: Der gegenwärtige Moment ändert 4 sich im Laufe der Zeit ständig, daher hört die Gruppe von Ereignissen, die zuvor die Gegenwart darstellte, auf zu existieren und wird durch eine andere Gruppe von Ereignissen ersetzt, die zur neuen Gegenwart wird (Dyke u. Bardon 2013: 346; Zimmerman 2005: 402). Die Theorie, die dem Präsentismus entgegengesetzt ist, ist der Eternalismus, der mit McTaggarts B-Theorie zusammenfällt. Nach Ansicht der Eternalisten sind vergangene und zukünftige Objekte bzw. Ereignisse so real wie ein gegenwärtiges Objekt bzw. Ereignis und sie existieren „even though they are not currently present“ (Markosian 2014: unpag.). Eternalismus wird auch Blockuniversumstheorie genannt, weil er besagt, dass das Universum ein gigantischer unveränderlicher vierdimensionaler Block ist, in welchem alle vergangenen, gegenwärtigen und zukünftigen Ereignisse existieren (Dyke u. Bardon 2013: 346-347; Markosian 2014: unpag.; Stoneham 2009: 201). Ein Mittelweg zwischen diesen beiden Positionen ist die Theorie des wachsenden (oder des sich entwickelnden) Blockuniversums: Vergangenheit und Gegenwart existieren, Zukunft nicht. I made trips to meet Al Andrews in Birmingham, Dave Hulan in Huntsville, James ayers in Attalla, AL, Shelby and Suzy Vick and Norm Metcalfe in Panama City, James Ayers in Attalla, Ala., and Emile Greenleaf in New Orleans. I also visited J.T. Oliver in Columbus, Ga. J.T. was among a small group of active fans in the 1950s in Georgia. Others included Lee Hoffman in Savannah, Roger D. Aycock in Rome, and the coterie of fans that formed that Atlanta Science Fiction Organization. Aycock, by the way, was also a pro who wrote under the name of Roger Dee. Since Columbus was only 30 miles from Opelika, I made several trips to visit J.T. I thought nothing of it at the time but realized later that he lived in one of the mill villages and probably worked in one of the mills. I remember him explaining that the Columbus high schools were culturally dispersed.
