By Rob Diaz-Marino Review | Theatre Having its roots in a low-budget 1960’s sci-fi fi lm, Little Shop of Horrors was adapted as an Off- Broadway musical in 1982 and has been a cult classic ever since. Many people know this play from the 1986 movie starring Rick Moranis and Ellen Greene – it has captured the imaginations of adults and children alike. That is why it’s so ex- citing to have the production happening at Stage West in Calgary, running from February 14th to April 20th. The play is about a nerdy, down-and-out fl orist’s as- sistant named Seymour (played by Josh Epstein), who dis- covers a very unique plant that he can’t even identify. He fondly names it “Audrey 2” after his co-worker and crush Audrey (Kristin Galer), and it becomes his project to nur- ture it back to health. But try as he might, it keeps wilt- ing. But you don’t have to reach orgasm from cunnilingus. You can enjoy the sensation, and when you want to come, you can switch to some other form of stimulation that does the job for you - like your girl’s fi st inside you, for instance. Yet many women say oral sex produces the most intense, toe- curling orgasms. And women who are especially sensitive may respond to the subtleties of a tongue more readily than a hand or vibrator. Here are some tips for experiencing heightened pleasure in receptive oral sex: Move. Sure, sometimes you’d like to offer up your body as a canvas for her talented tongue. But other times you might enjoy meeting her tongue with thrusts of your hips. Tell your partner you’d like to experiment with sensation through your move- ments. You can vary sensation by pushing your clitoris into her mouth or pulling away. You can move with her movements or counter her movements (which is an effective way to slow things down or speed them up). Choose your position according to what kind of sensation you like. If you lie on your back (or sit in a chair) with legs spread, your genitals will be stretched out, providing a wide surface for your partner’s sweeping licks, from vaginal opening to clitoral hood. You can sit on her face (actually kneel or squat). In this position, you have the most control. You can grind into her, pressing your whole vulva into her face. You can also hover just out of reach and make her earn her treat. In this position, your clitoris and labia hang down and can be sucked into her mouth. You can intensify the sensation by asking her to nibble gently on your tender fl esh. If you’re into dominance and submission, try having your submissive kneel at your feet while you furiously ride her face. Mixing genital sensation with a heady dose of power is a unique pleasure.

Olsen admits that the lesbian market is risky, however due to her passion for all-women events, she remains optimistic. In Olsen’s opinion the Calgary lesbian community is per- ceived as a city full of closeted rednecks, which has resulted in a lack in variety at women-only events. She asserts that “this city is full of amazing women’’, resulting in her willing- ness to experiment and explore the opportunities Calgary has to offer rather than simply giving in to fatalistic stereotypes. The lesbian community is changing considerably, Olsen be- lieves, and is embracing this change by creating GirlsGroove. Sherri is not only an entrepreneur when it comes to women-only events. She is an accomplished author of two books, Crossroads Cafe, Breaking Free from the Daily Grind, and COOLdog™ A Guide to Safe Off-Leash Fun. Olsen also works independently as a turnaround coach - in her own words, a “catalyst for people to feel good.” Perhaps attending the GirlsGroove dance on March 29th will be just the boost that women need to get that good feeling. To get tickets for the GirlsGroove Dance, you can either go online to purchase them, or join Sherri at Money Pennies on March 13th from 7:00-9:00, while listening to a sample of DJ HottBox’s music. There are tickets at the door of the event, however there is a $10 savings to buy in advance instead. She may even be planning an event to celebrate Gay Pride (let’s keep our fi ngers crossed).

Peter asked the second person, “What happens on Maundy Thursday?” The answer given this time was that, “On Maundy Thursday, folks gather for a great supper, with turkey, and sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie. Then they watch football on TV. If there’s time left in the day then they go out and shop for Christmas.” Peter replied that the person had his special days mixed up – Maundy Thursday comes shortly before a different major holiday – and that, once again, Jesus had been left out. Peter’s question to the third person was, “What is Easter about?” She replied that, “Easter is a holiday that remembers a righteous man. This man traveled far and wide. He taught and was heard by many supporters and friends. But this man was scorned and executed, and his body was left in a cave. Yet, on the third day, after that, the cave was opened…” Peter said, “Yes, this sounds pretty good so far. What hap- pened then?” So, the woman continued. “… and the man came out into the light. If he sees his shadow then there are six more weeks of winter.” In fact, Easter can be hard to explain – and it does seem that, along with Christmas – its message tends to get buried and lost - but it is also delightful to encounter. Easter is a story about the resurrection of Jesus. Jesus loved, and loves, all of us so much that he went to the cross – taking all of our sins with him. He rose from death to show us that we can have life in relationship with him and that we are given the promise of everlasting life. He loves, and has done this, for all of us – including all of us as Rainbow People. The occasional overlap occurred: although EGALE Canada chose not to take up the fi ght to have transgender issues on the table when working to have “sexual orientation” added to hate crimes and non-discrimination legislation, they did get involved with the Kimberly Nixon case in B.C. But while the GLBTQ community is now galvanizing south of the border and waving a banner of rights for all, Canadian GLB folk are succumbing to the laissez-faire attitude that all the victories are won and further activism is unnecessary. It’s caused Canadian GLB Centres to dwindle, caused Pride Week Societies across Canada to slip into factional rifts and fall short of volunteers, caused EGALE itself to face greatly reduced participation and funding, and even brought about an implosion of sorts among GLBTQ nightclubs. Perhaps the GLB community owes the trans community nothing - although that assertion is a sad departure from the solidarity the communities experienced prior to the 1950s. Personally, I have always thought that the measure of a move- ment resided in how it treats its disenfranchised, and there’s no doubt that that’s what we’re talking about with much of the transgender community. Unless someone has worked their way up to a point of affl uence, security and comfort prior to transition, transfolk are very rarely fi nancially stable. Hate crimes affect the most visible of us, and unless a couple is seen holding hands, that usually means that targets will be effeminate males, “butchy” females and those of us whose gender expression or gender identity defi es what people expect to see (another way in which the GLBQ has more in common with the transgender community than it sometimes real- izes or acknowledges). Employment issues are huge in the transgender community, where sometimes the best fi nancial

The play itself always takes the opportunity to allow local wom- en to make the fi rst step as performers. At the auditions, or- ganizers look for those brave few for whom this experience will bring the most growth. The 15-20 women who are chosen are given stories from the book to interpret and bring to an audience. This gives every night a new fl avor as these women unfold tales from every walk of life, age, and shyness. These women are your nurses, your bus drivers, your construction workers, your mothers, daugh- ters, grandmothers, aunts, nieces and wives. These stories are not isolated and neither is the awareness raised. This was echoed just recently in the recent decision regarding gay male organ and blood donation. Education and aware- ness is one of the most important tools we have to fi ght for a cure, or else the we may one day fi nd ourselves back at square one. Calgary Cares is just one opportunity to participate in the fi ght against HIV/AIDS. The GLBT community was the fi rst to raise the call for action, and year to year we’ve been a major part in supporting this organization to save our own and others.
