Families with teens in the Midwest are expected to spend an average of $700 on prom items such as limos or party buses, tickets, and clothes, according to a survey taken by Visa’s financial education program last month. Last year, the Star reported on a senior who spent $720 just on her appearance for prom: $350 on her dress, $160 on jewelry, $150 on hair, $60 on manicure, pedicure, eyebrows. For more information, see the June 2011 and June 2010 Steinmetz Star PDFs on the school website for pictures and articles about the money students spent. he baseball players have huge expectations for their team this year. Coming off a not-so-great season last year, and Tthis year short-handed but motivated, the team came together. With returning veterans and first year players, the team became a family. “A team isn’t a team unless they grow as one,” said Coach Angel Lefty De Jesus, returning for his second year as assistant coach of the Streaks. Friendships brought new players into the sport and love for the game allowed them to stay. With a pre-season approach- ing the baseball team was determined to win. Not having all of their players due to ineligibility or injury the players still didn’t let their spirits fall. “The team not only grew as a team but as individuals, each player contributes one or another attribute to each and every practice and game,” head coach Renato Roldan said. Many players this year decided to go on with a popular haircut — the tail. All committed players agreed to cut their hair leaving more on the back to allow a tail to grow. This exhibits the team’s dedication and loyalty to each other. “When you look good, you play good” is the team’s motto. With pre-season over, the Streaks are eager to go into the regular season, as a stronger, faster, and smarter team.
