    How Aristotle Onassis Made His First Million in Argentina (Reprinted from Brandstand Summer 2007) Many people are familiar with the story of how a vast fortune was amassed by Aristotle Onassis in his lifetime through control of a worldwide shipping empire but few are aware that his first million was earned making cigarettes in Argentina during the late 1920s and early 1930s. The story of this early cigarette manufacturing venture reveals much about the way Onassis would approach the business world all his life. Aristotle Onassis spent his early years in the city of Smirne in the province of Anatolia. His father, Socrates had moved to the bustling trade port after hearing stories of the numerous economic opportunities there. He had started up a small import-export shop dealing in cotton, figs, rugs and tobacco and his business soon flourished. With his three brothers as partners, Socrates expanded the business repeatedly and then began to focus on tobacco as their principal commodity. Socrates Onassis married the daughter of a village notable around 1898 and Aristotle and his brother Artemide were born within the next two years. Young Ari and his brother grew up during a period of hostilities between Greek and Turkish nationalists. The area where they lived was occupied by Turkey in 1909 and remained so throughout WWI. After the war, Greece was encouraged to reoccupy Smirne and they did so. However, the reoccupation was short-lived and in 1927, Turkish troops under command of Kemal Pascia conquered the territory once again. Socrates Onassis was thrown into a Turkish prison for his Greek nationalist activities.

I understand it. My whole life has been a terrific gamble”.1 Onassis was a great player in a game of “global chess” as it unraveled in a highly publicized case that stunned the world in the 1950s. This paper examines the confrontation of Aristotle Onassis with the American government in the 1950s. The ultimate goal is to examine the strategies used by weatlthy international family businesses to confront governments in host countries. The history of attacking entrepreneurial elites of foreign origin has been a repetitive story in international business.2 During the 1940s and 1950s a large number of Greek shipowners previously based in London had transferred their base to New York, at the time which was increasingly becoming a world maritime centre. In the post-WWII the United States, at the time the world‟s leading power was not a maritime nation and shipping under the American flag cost quite highly. In this way, it did not fill the oceans with American flag ships but promoted the adoption of flags of convenience from main traditional European shipowners from maritime countries. The flags of convenience, then the PanHoLib fleet -of Panama, Honduras and Liberia-, were cheap flags that provided cheap sea transport.3 In the 1940s and 1950s it was the Greeks that exploited such an 1 New York Times, 20 June 1958.

    JACKIE KENNEDY’S PRESIDENTIAL PERSONA: (RE)ASSESSING HER RHETORICAL INFLUENCE by COURTNEY ALEXSIS CAUDLE (Under the Direction of Edward Panetta) ABSTRACT In rhetorical studies, much has been written on the role of first lady and the women whom enacted this position. Scholars in several fields (history, rhetoric, popular culture) have examined First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy: however, this thesis supplements existing research both in first lady scholarship generally and on Jackie’s specific performance as first lady. I contend that Jackie’s performance remains unique because she carved a celebrity space both inimitable in the 1960s yet available to subsequent first ladies. I examine mediated texts (both visual and written) from 1961-1963 to (re)examine her enactment of the role during (1) President Kennedy’s Inauguration, (2) her televised tour of the White House, and (3) President Kennedy’s funeral. Ultimately, I argue she was integral to historical and contemporary public memory of his presidential persona and legacy.     Aristotle Sokratis Onassis (Greek: Αριστοτέλης Ωνάσης, Aristotelis Onasis; 15 January 1906 – 15 March 1975), commonly called Ari orAristo Onassis, was a prominent Greek shipping magnate.[1][2] Some sources claim he was born in 1900 but that he later changed his date of birth so as to avoid deportation from Turkey.[citation needed] Early life Onassis was born in Karatass, a suburb of Smyrna (now İzmir, Turkey) to Socrates and Penelope Onassis (nee Dologu). Onassis had one full-sister, Artemis, and two half-sisters, Kalliroi and Merope, by his father's second marriage following Penelope's death. Socrates Onassis came from the village of Moutalasski (now named Talas), near Cappadocia in Asia Minor, which is the present-day Kayseri province, in central Turkey.[citation needed] A successful shipping entrepreneur, he was able to send his children to prestigious schools. At the age of 16, Aristotle Onassis spoke three foreign languages: English, Spanish and Turkish,[3] when he graduated from the local Evangelical Greek School .[4] After being briefly administered by Greece (1919–1922) in the aftermath of the allied victory in World War I, Smyrna was re-taken by Turkey and the Onassis family's substantial property holdings were lost, causing them to become refugees fleeing to Greece after the Great Fire of Smyrna.[5] During this period Aristotle Onassis lost three uncles, an aunt and her husband Chrysostomos Konialidis and their daughter, who were burned to death on fire in a church in Thyatira where 500 Christians were seeking shelter from the Great Fire of Smyrna. In 1923, Aristotle Onassis left for Buenos Aires, Argentina by Nansen passport, reportedly carrying just $60 in his pocket, and got his first job with the British United River Plate Telephone Company.[citation needed] Business Argentina Onassis imported tobacco from Turkey with help from his father.

    The Shadow of the Scorpion Now, after the death of my second husband Aristotle Onassis, I am left alone on the Greek island of Skorpios which until recently was the private property of my late husband. And the future of the island seems to me to be about as certain as my own. I am reasonably well off so in mentioning an uncertain future I don’t mean financial problems, but rather psychological ones. My state of mind has been bothering me lately, which is not surprising for a widow whose children have grown up. I am after all reaching that difficult age for a woman when various fears and unwanted memories can suddenly become obsessive and even take on a kind of hallucinatory weirdness. I have almost resigned myself to the fact that I am suffering from hallucinations, but admitting this to myself is not easy. I often think of the Greek priests and the sweet smelling wafts of incense in the local churches (I took a deep breath of it at my husband’s funeral service, which is still there, stuck in my nostrils) and yet, like a true American, I have decided to share my psychological problems not with the bearded priests, but with the smooth-shaven psychotherapists. As such, to say I am alone on the island isn’t absolutely true – with me here are Doctor Mitchell and Doctor Abraham. They are without doubt highly qualified professionals (which is reflected in the amounts I have to transfer into their accounts in return for the professional sympathy of these gentlemen) and, as Mitchell keeps telling me, my condition is gradually getting back to normal.

His wife, Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy, became the “First Lady”. She was one of the youngest First Ladies ever, and remains one of the most popular even today. She was born Jacqueline Lee Bouvier in 1929. She lived in New York City and East Hampton, Long Island. She loved riding horses and had lessons at a very early age. She went to private schools. Her interests were ballet, drawing, and writing poems and stories. Jacqueline went to Vassar College and traveled around Europe. She became a photographer for a Washington, D.C., newspaper and soon met Senator John F. Kennedy. They were married in 1953. They had a daughter named Caroline and a son named John, Jr. John, Jr. was born just before his father became president. The family moved into the White House in 1961. “First Lady” is not an official title; the person is not elected and has no official duties. However, there are general expectations that the First Lady will be the social grace of the White House. Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy did this very well, bringing together artists and politicians with her charm and charisma. She was also responsible for the restoration of the White House, making it clear for the future that the White House is an important historical monument as well as the President’s residence. Kennedy was a devoted mother. She said, “If you bungle raising your children, I don’t think whatever else you do will matter very much.” As First Lady, Jackie had many responsibilities, but her children always were her top priority.

Dozens of books have sought to chronicle that mystique, hail her style, and commend her contribution to the youthful persona of the Kennedy administration. She seems to be an object ripe for rhetorical study; yet, for many communication scholars, Kennedy’s cultural iconicity diminishes her legacy as First Lady, and she remains an exemplar of political passivity. Her influence on the American public’s cultural and political imagination, however, demonstrates a need for scholars to assess with greater depth her development from First Lady to American icon in the early 1960s. Thus, this dissertation focuses on three case studies that analyze Jacqueline Kennedy’s image across different media: fashion spreads in Vogue magazine and Harper’s Bazaar published immediately after the inauguration in 1961; her televised tour of the White House broadcast in February 1962; and Andy Warhol’s 1964 Jackie prints, which drew from her construction of the Camelot myth after JFK’s funeral. These case studies seek to show how “icon” becomes an inventional and conceptual resource for the role of a modern first lady and how Kennedy’s shift to public icon in her own right (after and outside of her position as first lady) was mediated in nuanced ways that both reflected early Cold War (suburban) culture and shaped the larger institutional discourses of which she was part.
