Matthew McIvor came through a rigorous three- hour seido karate grading examination to claim his first degree black belt. The grading was taken by Wellington’s Jun Shihan Ben Otang (6th dan) at Te Awamutu Seido Karate’s dojo (training hall) in Bond Road. McIvor, having started karate as a youngster at the local club, has spent most of his adult life training at the Dunedin Seido club.
