The grading was taken by Wellington’s Jun Shihan Ben Otang (6th dan) at Te Awamutu Seido Karate’s dojo (train- ing hall) in Bond Road. McIvor, having started karate as a youngster at the local club, has spent most of his adult life training at the Seido club. He obtained his bachelor commerce degree last year from Otago University.
