Ba mhaith liom fáilte a chur roimh gach duine anseo go Craobh Scór Sinsir na hÉireann i gCaisleán an Bharraigh inniu. Ócáid fhíorthá- bhachtach í Craobh na hÉireann de Scór Sinsir i bhféilre Chumann Lúthchleas Gael gach bliain agus tá mé ag súil go mór le babhtaí ceannais den chéad scoth a fheiceáil inniu.

Seán Ó hÓráin, I am very much looking forward to these Scór Uachtarán Chumann Lúthcleas Gael Sinsir All-Irelands Finals and seeing all the talented musicians, dancer, singers and other performers for a feast of talent and culture today in Castlebar. The talent and entertainment we get from the various different Scór competitions contribute greatly to what makes our Associ- ation so great.

The GAA is far more than a sporting organisation and in Scór we get a realisa- tion of this. As we all know, Scór is celebrating 50 years in existence this year and I would like to take this opportunity to thank and congratulate all those throughout the country who helped shape, form and make Scór what it is today. Many of those people are no longer with us but I am sure they will be in our thoughts today.

Guím gach rath orthu siúd uilig a bheidh ag gabháil ar stáitse inniu chomh maith leo siúd atá ag glacadh páirte i dTráth na gCeist. Tá mé cinnte go bhfuil an-lá siamsaíochta amach romhainn.

Beirigí bua.

Seán Ó hÓráin, Uachtarán Chumann Lúthcleas Gael

6 Scór Sinsir Babhta Ceannais na hÉireann Teachtaireacht ó Chathaoirleach Choiste Náisiúnta Scór Den dara huair i mbliana, tá sé de phribhléid agam fáilte a chur roimh mhuintir Scór agus iad ag teacht chuig mo chontae dúchais le haghaidh Chomórtas Uile-Éireann Scór. Tá súil agam go mbainfidh chuile dhuine taitneamh as an deireadh seachtaine.

Tar éis dom babhtaí ceannais Uladh agus Laighean a fheiceáil, agus tar éis a bhfuil Aodán Ó Braonáin Cathaoirleach, Choiste Náisiúnta Scór cloiste agam faoi na comórtais sna cúigí eile, táim ag súil le sárchomórtais inniu. Go raibh an t-ádh leis na hiomaitheoirí go léir. Tá gach moladh tuillte acu agus craobh chúige buaite acu. Tá ardmholadh tuillte ag a gclubanna, ag a gcontaetha agus go háirithe acu siúd a stiúir anseo iad leis na míonna agus leis na blianta anuas. Tá foireann dhofheicthe taobh thiar de gach iomaitheoir. Cé go bhfuil siad dofheicthe, níor chóir dearmad a dhéanamh orthu.

As we continue to celebrate 50 years of Scór, we should take great pride in the levels of performance being displayed by all our competitors. The Founders of Scór, one of whom, Tony Williamson of Down, is our guest here today, can hardly have imagined the contribution their innovative idea would play in the preservation and promotion of our national culture. Once again, on behalf of Coiste Náisiúnta Scór, the Scór community and the broader GAA, I thank every- one for their contribution, large or small, to the foundation, establishment and promotion of Scór over the past 50 years.

The high level of performance evident at the provincial and All-Ireland finals of Scór Sinsir should not blind us to the problems being witnessed nationwide with club and county competition at this level. In a few weeks time a General Meeting of Scór and a Youth Forum will convene to discuss ways of progressing Scór and readying it for the next 50 years. I urge all club, county and provincial Scór com- mittees to discuss the proposals on the Clár for those meetings. The challenges we face are great but so too is our ability to face and conquer them.

Mo bhuíochas leis na Moltóirí inniu. Bíonn éacht le déanamh acu buaiteoirí a roghnú as na sáriomaitheoirí a bhíonn ar an ardán. Buíochas freisin le Coistí Scór Mhaigh Eo agus Chonnacht a d’eagraigh na comórtais faoi dhó i gCaisleán an Bharraigh i mbliana. Our county and provincial Scór committees have worked tirelessly to get our competitions to this point. They and their Oifigigh Chultúir agus Theanga are the truly indispensable people without whom Scór would not survive.

They are greatly appreciated. 7

Póilín Mhig Aoidh 11 Scór Sinsir Babhta Ceannais na hÉireann Teachtaireacht ó Chathaoirleach Scór na Mumhan Mairéad Uí Fhaoláin, Cathaoirleach

As Munster chairperson, I am delighted to welcome you all to Castlebar this afternoon for the All Ireland finals of Scór Sinsir. It is a huge honour for me personally to be serving as Munster Chairperson in this, the 50th year of Scór. As a Cork woman, I am proud that we continue to showcase the vision of Fermoy man, Derry Gowen, founder of Scór. For our Munster Final this year, we returned to Leeside and had a wonderful day's entertainment in Cork City Hall. Mairéad Uí Fhaoláin We are fortunate within the Scór family to have so many Cathaoirleach , Scór na Mumhan people who volunteer and get involved year in, year out. This year as we celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Scór, it has been wonderful to see so many people both returning to Scór and those entering for the first time.

Thank you to everyone involved in making today's competition happen: first and foremost thanks to all our competitors for putting themselves forward and for achieving such success to date, in reaching an All Ireland Final; to all the coaches, mentors and supporters.

I wish all our competitors and their mentors every success today, in particular our Munster champions. No matter what the results are, remember you are a provincial champion and in the top four in the country—an amazing accolade in anyone's eyes.

I would especially like to send best wishes and good luck to two Munster men who are officiating in today's events: Diarmuid Ó Súilleabháin, Corcaigh, who is our Fear an Tí and Donncha de Floid, Tiobraid Árann, our Máistir na gCeist - go n-éirí go geal libh. Today is also a special occasion for Séamus McGrath, Tiobraid Árann, who is receiving a Long Serving Award.

I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all my fellow members of Coiste na Mumhan, and all our county Cultural and Scór officers for all their hard work and dedication throughout the year. As we celebrate Scór Caoga, let us also remember our club mates and friends who are no longer with us, who have contributed to Scór over the years. Today I would like us to remember our dear Scór friend Paddy Fitzgerald who passed away this year. Paddy was a true Scór man, holding many positions in his beloved county of Waterford and serving on Coiste na Mumhan.

Bainigí sult agus taitneamh as an lá agus guím gach rath orthu siúd a bheidh ag glacadh páirt inniu.

12 Scór Sinsir Babhta Ceannais na hÉireann Teachtaireacht ó Chathaoirleach Scór Laighean Caitríona Uí Dhálaigh, Cathaoirleach Ar son Coiste Scór Laighean ba mhaith comhghairdeas a ghabháil le gach duine atá ag glacadh páirte anseo i gCáisleán an Bharraigh inniu i gCraobh na hÉireann Scór Sinsir 2019.

Bhíomar anseo i Mí Feabhra le h-aghaidh Craobh Scór na nÓg agus dár ndóigh beidh deireadh seachtaine iontach againn arís.

Tá súil agam go mbainfidh na hiomaitheoirí go léir Caitríona Uí Dhálaigh an-taitneamh as imeachtaí an lae inniu. Cathaoirleach, Scór Laighean

The Scór Sinsir Finals, being held in Castlebar today, bring an end to the 2018/19 Scór year. This year, to mark the 50th Anniversary of Scór we held both our Scór na nÓg and Scór Sinsir provincial finals in the fabulous National Opera House in . While participation at Scór Sinsir level continues to be an area that could certainly be improved upon, our provincial final was nevertheless extremely entertaining and boasted a very high standard of competition.

We were delighted to welcome Carlow based company, Netwatch Ireland, on board as sponsors of two beautiful sets of cups for our Scór na nÓg and Scór Sinsir Laighean winners. We are extremely grateful to them for this generous sponsorship making this 50th year of Scór that little bit extra special.

To our provincial committee and to all who helped organise our two Leinster Finals in the National Opera House, I extend my sincere gratitude. A huge thank you also to our PRO, Kathryn Noone, who continues to promote Scór Laighean through Facebook and Twitter.

The very best of luck to all the competitors representing Leinster here today. It is a huge achievement to get to an All-Ireland Final and to get an opportunity to represent your Club, County and Province. There are representatives from Westmeath, Meath, Kilkenny, Kildare, Offaly and Laois on stage today in addition to the Leinster counties involved in Tráth na gCeist. Go n-éirí an t-ádh libh ar fad.

Today the Leinster recipient of the “Long Service Award” is Wexford Scór man, Seán Ormonde. Seán has always worked hard to support and promote Scór over the years. I congratulate Seán on his well deserved award today.

Mar focal scor ba mhaith liom mo bhuíochas féin a ghabhail le Rúnaí Coiste Scór Laighean, Áine Ní Chinnéide, as ucht a cuid oibre go léir i rith na bliana.

Our Máistir na gCeist today, is a proud Tipperary man, Donncha de Floid from the Newport club, in the north division of the county. Denis has been involved with Scór in the Premier County from the outset. When the first 'dedicated' Scór committee was set up in the County in 1982, Denis was elected Cathaoirleach, a position he held in conjunction with his role as Leas Cathaoirleach of the County Board at the time. On his watch Scór enjoyed a period of phenom- Donncha de Floid enal success both internally in the County, and Máistir na gCeisteanna further afield on the Provincial and National stage.

While he has an affinity with all the competitions, the Tráth na gCeist, in its various guises, down the years, has had a particular attraction for him. A member of the Newport team that participated in the All Ireland Final in 1985, he has gone on to become a highly respected Quiz Master. His services have been in much demand over the years, both at county and provincial level.

Denis has held all positions in his club at various stages. He also served as Cathaoirleach of the North Divisional Board for three years as well as acting for a period as County Senior Football selector.

Away from his GAA interests, Denis hit the National headlines in 2017, when as Chairman of the Birdhill Tidy Towns committee, he had the honour of accepting the National Tidy Towns title on behalf of the picturesque village, an honour which led to his selection as Tipperary Man of the Year 2017.

A dedicated historian, he co-wrote the Tipperary Association Annual Awards receipicants history of the club, back in 1985, and Newport parishionser Denis Floyd recently updated it under his own steam. He has also written the book, 'In The Shade Of Arra' which is a local history of the Burgess area, where Denis worked for many years as príomhoide of the local primary school.

Brother of current Tipperary County Board Runaí, Tim, Denis is married to Mary, with a son and daughter in family.

16 Scór Sinsir Babhta Ceannais na hÉireann Fear an Tí Diarmuid Ó Súilleabháin

It is fitting that, as we celebrate the 'golden jubilee' of Scór, a Corkman should be select- ed to officiate as Fear A' Tí at the culmination of the Scór Sinsir season, here in Castlebar today. This is particularly appropriate given the 'rootage' of the competitions in the 'Rebel' County. The man selected doesn't really need an introduction, as he is one of the most highly respected administrators in Cumann Lúthchleas Gael at the moment. Diarmuid Ó Súilleabháin Having recently completed his term as Fear an Ti Cathaoirleach of Comhairle na Mumhan, where he earned many plaudits both inside and outside the Province, Diarmuid Ó Súilleabháin from the Cluain Uamha (Cloyne) Club, in East Cork is a most worthy appointee.

Jerry O’Sullivan has been 'steeped' in the GAA all his life. He got involved in his own club at a very early age, where he quickly rose to the position of Cathaoirleach. It is a matter of great pride to him that along with his 'administrative' duties at that time, a period of over sixteen years, that he suc- ceeded in holding down a position on the club team also. Having completed his club commitments, he went on to serve as PRO of the Divisional Board, before moving on to Vice Chair and Chairman, which he held for six years.

It was only a matter of time before he moved on to the County Board. His first appointment here was as Youth Officer. As the inaugural Coaching Officer he earned the respect of coaches and players alike. Having served for three years as Vice Chair he was unanimously elected to the Chair of the County Board at the 2008 convention. It was a matter of deep pride for him when the Senior Football team mounted the steps of the Hogan Stand to collect the Sam Maguire Cup in 2010, bridging a twenty year gap back to 1990.

Despite all his commitments with the games aspect of the association, Jerry has always maintained a strong interest in Scór. Competing regularly with the club quiz team, it is no coincidence that Scór flourished under his watch at all levels. He was instrumental in ensuring that the recent Munster Final took place in City Hall, Cork, and was a most efficient Fear A' Tí on that occasion.

The now retired telecommunications technician is married to Gearóidín. They have five sons and one daughter along with 14 grandchildren in a very sports orientated family.

17 Scór Sinsir Babhta Ceannais na hÉireann Building Blocks of Scór Antaine Mac Liam It is now 50 years since Anthony Williamson or Tony as he is fondly regarded by the Gaels of Down was to the fore along with Derry Gowan in helping to create a facet of our Association that sets us apart from all of our com- petitors. The creation of Scór meant that the GAA ethos of not just being a sporting body but a cultural one too would outlive many other facets of the Association and would give us a distinction amongst other field games and Associations. Tony Williamson had the foresight that we needed something to keep our Gaels active in the Antaine Mac Liam winter time and if we take it a step further it could well be acknowledged that the creation of the cultural activities led in its own way to the development of many of the fine club facilities that we have today. We need- ed somewhere to host the activities and where better than on our own premises and thus the development of Scór and the work of Tony Williamson in such has led to the development by the GAA of its own facilities.

Tony Williamson was always a man who wanted to serve this great Association and to serve its people too, as player with Rostrevor and then as an Administrator for Club and County he gave selflessly of his time for the greater good. In administration he joined the Down County Committee as Ulster Council Delegate in 1973 and in 1974 followed in the footsteps of another great Rostrevor man George Tinnelly when he was elected County Chairman. Tony served a three-year term as Chairman of the County and it is interesting to note that his replacement in 1977 was another great contributor to Scór, the late Harry McEvoy.

In 1980 Tony Williamson returned as Chairman in Down and had the great honour of leading the County as we hosted GAA Congress for the first time and he provided leadership that saw the hosting of Congress embraced by the whole community. This was a wonderful opportunity for the County of Down, the heart of St Patrick’s County, to embrace the GAA and Tony Williamson ensured that Down was a place of warm welcome for delegates from Ireland and beyond.

This was the last time that Tony would hold senior office in Down, he had given great service to his County and would continue to do so for his club, Rostrevor. There can be no doubting of Tony Williamson’s hard work, commitment and dedication to any task he undertook. Many were undertaken at personal cost to himself and his family but the one thing that could always be said of Tony Williamson was that he always gave of his best for the greater good.

Down GAA and the world of Scór are in a better place for the involvement of Tony Williamson, for men like Tony are the people who helped make us who we are, they played a part and they made a difference. Go raibh maith agat Antaine. 18 Scór Sinsir Babhta Ceannais na hÉireann Gradaim as Seirbhís Fhada Póilín Uí Ruanaidh

Pauline Rooney’s involvement in community affairs has been enduring and consistent since she qualified as a primary teacher in 1964. Her first appointment was as principal in Drumlusty N.S., a two teacher school which later amalgamated with St. Daigh’s in Inniskeen parish, County Monaghan. She played with Inniskeen and trained the successful school camogie team for community games. St. Póilín Uí Ruanaidh Daigh’s were medal-winners at the finals in Mosney. In an award-laden career she played also with Clontibret, Cremartin and Scotstown. Her last success was the winning of an Intermediate championship with Scotstown in 1995. The final of that competition she remembers with pride. The match was played on the 13th July. Pauline left Glencolmcille at 3.30pm in the afternoon, where she had been attending a music school with her family. She travelled 110 miles to play the match, joined in the after match celebrations and returned to south-west Donegal that same evening. As captain of the county team she won an Ulster Junior C’ship medal in 1978 and was an inter-county referee for many years. Later she won All- Ireland titles (Tráth na gCeist, Nuachleas) in Ceol, Caint agus Damhsa which was the camogie equivalent of Scór. She was a Scór competitor during the seventies winning county titles at Scór Sinsir for Aithriseoireacht in 1977, ’78 and ‘79.

Since the eighties Pauline has been Scór coordinator with Scotstown CLG and in the intervening years has celebrated the club’s All-Ireland successes-two Ceol Uirlise and one Novelty Act in Scór Sinsir and one Ceol Uirlise in Scór na n-Óg. For a number of years she was Oifigeach Cultúir for County Monaghan CLG. Over the years she has adjudicated Aithriseoireacht and Nuachleas at provincial and All -Ireland level and was Máistreas na gCeist at a Scór na nÓg final.

In 1981 Pauline joined the Eamonn Ó Muirí branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and since then has been an enthusiastic officer in the branch. She is presently branch secretary and chairperson of the county board. She represents the county board as delegate to annual congress and is Treoraí na Gaeilge for Cúige Uladh. Pauline is a keen Gaelgóir and is leader and tutor of a Ciorcal Gaeilge which she established in Scotstown seven years ago. Having first attended practice with the local church choir she leads the ciorcal for an eighty-minute fun session imparting useful day-to-day phrases and listening to humorous news, from the participants, the oldest of whom is in her ninetieth year. Her expertise is in demand at fleadhanna cheoil throughout the country as adjudicator for the Cómhra competitions.

Seán Ormonde is a native of the Model County of Wex- ford. He is a proud Blackwater man and has made a great contribution to his local St. Brigid’s G.A.A. Club for many years. He spent many years on the playing fields before involving himself in the management of teams and the administrative side of the club. Seán completed his Secondary Education in St. Peter’s College, from where he graduated in 1954. He began working with Teagasc in Johnstown Castle in 1960 and remained there until his retirement in 2003.

Seán became hugely involved in Wexford GAA County Board, acting as Bord na nÓg secretary from 1972 to 1977. He later became secretary of Wexford GAA Seán Ormonde County Board where he served from 1985 to 1992. While holding the position of County Secretary, Seán developed a great interest in Scór and did great work to promote Scór in Wexford. He became Scór County Chairman in 1993 and only recently stepped down from this position. He has also held the position of Scór Treasurer in Wexford.

Seán acted as Scór delegate to Scór Laighean for many years and judged at pro- vincial and national finals. He always has great words of encouragement for all performers. He thoroughly enjoys attending all Scór events and has attended a huge number of provincial and All Ireland finals. He fondly remembers finals in INEC Killarney and the Gaiety Theatre, Dublin and is delighted to be returning to Castlebar for another final.

Seán has previously received awards recognising his voluntary work for the G.A.A. and is a holder of a Wexford Sean-Gael award and Wexford District Hall of Fame award. He is now enjoying retirement with his wife Geraldine, son John, daughter Janette and his five grandchildren – Grace and Luke Kelly, Ellen, Eoin and Eve Ormonde. Seán is honoured to receive this award today.

20 Scór Sinsir Babhta Ceannais na hÉireann Gradaim as Seirbhís Fhada Kathleen Moffatt

Passionate about all things Irish, Leitrim and Dromod, Kathleen was born in that lovely Shannonside village and has lived there all her life, with the exception of a few years when she temporarily 'emigrated' to nearby Carrick- on-Shannon. She was the third and youngest of three girls born to Michael John and Lily Moffatt, both of whom were deeply involved in the War of Independence and the struggle for Ireland's freedom. In fact, Lily was hugely involved in Cumann na mBan both locally and nationally, so it is not surprising that Kathleen

has been imbued with that Gaelic spirit Kathleen Moffatt throughout her life.

Kathleen was educated locally and completed her secondary education as a boarder in the Marist Convent in Carrick-on-Shannon. She excelled in music, particularly on the piano and in singing, but it is through her interest in Irish dancing that Kathleen is known throughout the length and breath of Ireland. Her knowledge, advice and expertise is often sought by people all over Ireland and she has just stepped down as an executive committee member of Cairde Rince Céilí na hÉireann. She is credited with having been responsible for the revival of the Leitrim Set which had been lost for years.

Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann was founded almost seventy years ago and from the outset the Moffatt family was involved in the setting up of branches in Leitrim and all over Connacht. Dromod even had its own marching band for several years. Kathleen would have been involved as a competitor, coach and adjudicator for many of those seven-odd decades. She tutored the Ballinamore Set Dancers to win two All-Ireland titles in a row in the mid-90s.

When Scór was set up in 1969, the late Stanley Cox persuaded Kathleen to become involved. She was immediately bitten by the bug and records show that she won county titles in the early '70s in dancing, but it was through her promotion of Scór rather than as participant that she will always be credited with. Two of those she brought on board were the late Shay Reynolds and her brother-in-law, Cormac McGill. For well nigh on fifty years, she has adjudicated at local, county, provincial and national levels in Scór and her impartiality and adjudications have never been questioned. She is an almost constant attendee at all Scór events. 21 Scór Sinsir Babhta Ceannais na hÉireann Gradaim as Seirbhís Fhada Kathleen Moffatt

Outside of her involvement in the above, Kathleen has promoted her home village of Dromod at every opportunity. For those of you who have never visited this gorgeous village, don't let this year pass without paying a visit! Just a few marks off the top prize in the Tidy Towns competition, it is hoped that this year will see them win the ultimate prize that has narrowly eluded them on so many occasions. Kathleen has just stepped down after serving as treasurer of the Tidy Towns committee after forty eight years dedicated service.

Having been chosen as the Leitrim Guardian Person of the Year in 2007, we in Leitrim are utterly thrilled that this affable lady is today receiving a well-deserved Long Service Award.

Séamus Mac Craith

When the village of Newcastle in South Tipperary is mentioned in the context of Scór, the name of Séamus McGrath springs immediately to mind. Séamus has been an ever present driving force for the promotion of culture and the ideals of Scór since its inception, not only in Newcastle but throughout Tipperary.

After the foundation of the local Céilí Club in 1969, the Scór competition became the outlet for dancers, singers and actors alike to show their talent. The Newcastle club first took part in Scór in 1973 and has taken part every year since. Séamus was part of that first group and developed an association with Séamus Mac Craith Scór that lasts to this day. Participation in the Rince Seit competition has rewarded Séamus with numerous county titles, a number of Munster titles and 2 All-Ireland Senior Scór titles in 1985 and 1987. This is the pinnacle for any Scór competitor and for Séamus and that group of dancers to win two national titles in three years was an outstanding achievement.

As well as participating on stage, Séamus has given service to Scór on numerous committees over the years. Séamus was elected Treasurer of the Tipperary Scór committee when it was founded in 1983. He has previously served as Chairman of the county committee and he is still a member of Coiste Scór Thiobraid Árainn. 22 Scór Sinsir Babhta Ceannais na hÉireann Gradaim as Seirbhís Fhada Séamus Mac Craith

He has served on Coiste Scór na Mumhan for over 30 years and has held the po- sition of Munster Council Chairman in the past and is the current treasurer of Munster Scór. He is a very familiar sight to all Scór people at the door for all of the Munster competitions. Séamus was elected to serve on the National Scór Committee from 1997-2000 under the chairmanship of Séamus Ó Faoláin (Iarmhí), and the presidency of the late Joe McDonagh. During all this time, however, he never forgot the most important part of the organisation to him – his club. Séamus is now a trustee of Newcastle GAA Club and down through the years served as chairman and treasurer. During his nine year stint as chairman, our wonderful GAA Community Club house was built. This building is now used daily for all GAA related activities, including Scór rehearsals. It is a testament to Séamus that the club has been so successful in all grades of Scór over the years, especially over the last number of years.

Séamus met his wife Kathleen while practising for Scór in 1973 and they were married in 1979. Kathleen is also an avid set dancer with All-Ireland titles to her name. Their entire family are very Scór orientated with their daughter, Kathy, the current dancing teacher in Newcastle. In the last five years, Kathy has led our dancers to three Munster Scór na nÓg Rince Fóirne titles, two Munster Scór Sinsir Rince Foirne titles, a Munster Scór Sinsir Rince Seit title and twenty dancing county titles at all Scór levels. Her love of dancing and culture has been fostered by the example of her parents, and the people of Newcastle are very grateful for their commitment and dedication. The influence of Séamus McGrath on Scór locally, provincially and nationally cannot be measured and “thank you” will never be enough. However, this national award is a great start. Go raibh míle maith agat a Shéamuis, táimid go léir fíor-bhuíoch duit agus tá an gradam seo lán tuillte agat.

Scór Sinsir Babhta Ceannais na hÉireann Proinsias Ó Maolmhuaidh An Appreciation

Proinsias Ó Maolmhuaidh Maigh Eo

At harvest time last September the Lord gathered to himself our dear friend, teacher and mentor Proinsias Ó Maolmhuaidh (Frank Molloy) of Clár Chlainne Mhuiris, Co. Mhuigheo. For sixty years, or more, his contribution to Claremorris GAA had been second to none. He left a rich legacy of commitment as a player, mentor, referee, selector, manager, administrator, Scór performer and mentor, Oifigeach na Gaeilge, fundraiser, colleague and friend. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis. Proinsias Ó Maolmhuaidh Proinsias played underage football for Claremorris and St Jarlath’s College, Tuam before making the breakthrough to the club’s senior team. He was a member of the 1964/65 and 1971 teams to win Mayo Senior championships. He played junior football until he was in his mid 50’s and was the driving force behind Claremorris Masters teams who also won county titles. He was a manager to under age and junior teams for many years. On the inter-county front, Proinsias holds the unique record of being the only player to keep the great Sligo legend, Mickey Kearns, scoreless in an inter-county game. He was a selector with Mayo All-Ireland Minor teams and an accomplished and highly regarded referee. He showed his competitive nature on each and every outing but never more than when he faced the long hard battle with Parkinson’s Disease that occupied, but never defined, the final decade of his life. Bhí fíorghrá ag Proinsias don Ghaeilge agus do chúrsaí cultúrtha. Bhí sé dearfach i gconaí, ag moladh agus ag spriocadh gasúir. Many young men in Claremorris and surrounding areas had the privilege of being taught by Proinsias in St Colman’s College. (He had previously taught in Castlebar, where former Taoiseach, Enda Kenny was a pupil). Such was his enthusiasm for the that he inculcated a love of it among many of his students and a respect for it among many more who rarely used it. As a Cigire Scoile he was an enlightened advisor to the teachers in his area. He formed Ógras, an Irish language youth club, for the teens of the area. He also wrote “Athair na h-Athbheochana: Uilleog De Búrca” a biography of Canon Ulick Burke, parish priest of Claremorris and a leading light in the revival of the Irish Language Movement in the late 19th century. 24 Scór Sinsir Babhta Ceannais na hÉireann Proinsias Ó Maolmhuaidh An Appreciation

Many of his pupils will have first heard the expression “Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann”(His like will never be seen again) from the mouth of Proinsias. In terms of his contribution to Scór and to Claremorris GAA, there can be no more fitting epitaph.

“Ach mairfigh cáil an tsean-fhir áigh Fad fhásfaidh féar ar thalamh; Beidh a scéal á ríomh ag fearaibh Fáil, Is anseo i lár an ghleanna.”

Pádraig Mac Gearailt (Paddy Fitzgerald) An Appreciation Pádraig Mac Gearailt A d’éag 7ú Feabhra 2019

Táimid fós faoi scamall an bhróin ins na Déisigh, le imeacht Padraig MacGearailt i mí Feabhra ar shlí na fírinne. Bhí a fhios againn gó léir nach raibh togha na sláinte ag Pádraig ach ní raibh éinne ag súil le imeacht Paddy chomh tobann is a tháinig sé. Cé go raibh an sláinte ag teip air, lean Paddy ag obair don club Cumann Iomána agus Peile Dungarbhán go dian díograsach agus faoi lán seoil. Bhí aithne ó cheann na tíre ar Paddy, fear a bhí go mór chun chinn i gcúrsaí Cumann Lúthchleas Gael. Tírgráthóir Padraig, a bhí árd mheas aige ar gach rud a bhí gaelach agus dúchasach idir ceol, stair, cultúir, cluichí, agus an teanga. In abairt amháin is féidir linn a rá gan dabht gur chaith Paddy a shaol

ag obair ar son Cumann Lúthchleas Gael. Bhí grá Pádraig Mac Gearailt speisialta ag Pádraig Mac Gearailt i gcúrsaí ceoil, go haraithe imeachtaí Scór.

Let’s turn back the clock to 1974 when the then President Pádraig Ó Fainín invit- ed Paddy to get involved with a fledging talent competition that was being run under C.L.C.G. Paddy immersed himself fully, taking on a number of roles in his first year of involvement. His attention to detail, meticulous planning, infectious enthusiasm and work ethic were his hall marks. His natural aptitude made him an ideal candidate for the positions of Chairman of both the Divisional and County

25 Scór Sinsir Babhta Ceannais na hÉireann Pádraig Mac Gearailt (Paddy Fitzgerald) An Appreciation

Scór Committees as well as delegate to the Provincial Committee, positions he held with distinction for a number of years. 1979 saw Paddy elected Vice- Chairman of the Provincial group and three years later he was handed the baton of stewardship as Munster Chairman of Scór. His efforts didn’t go unnoticed and his tenure in the Chair was marked by many richly deserved plaudits for a job well done, carried out with admirable fervour and vision. Paddy’s involvement with Scór was not just restricted to administration, he also served as Fear-a-Tí on numerous occasions and was ‘Stage Manager’ at Munster semi-finals and finals right up to his demise. A keen advocate of Scór na bPáistí, seeing it’s merits for the personal development of our primary school children and engendering a love of all aspects of Irish culture at tender years. He also represented his club Dun- garvan at County and Provincial level in Bailéad Ghrúpa. While disappointed that the chance to appear in an All-Ireland Final eluded him, nevertheless he availed of the opportunity, to air songs by local songwriter Kevin Evans as well as ‘Cill Aodáin’ and the ‘Old Dungarvan Oak’. Apart from Scór, Paddy was a lynch pin in the local ‘No Name Club’. His contribution to Dungarvan G.A.A. was immense and since 1978 when he transferred from his native Colligan to the Old Boro club, Paddy devoted each ounce of energy to Dungarbhán. He served as Juvenile and Adult, Chairman for many years. He was Club President, Club Trustee and delegate to both County and Western Boards. Treasurer of the Western Board for 19 years, he gave ster- ling service as a member and indeed caretaker of the Fraher Field Committee, a venue that hosted All-Ireland Finals in the early 20th century. As a fundraiser he had few equals, his knowledge of the rules often saw his wise counsel in demand, the list is endless. Not surprising Paddy was honoured by Scór with a national long service award in 2017. He became the first to be awarded the Jack Furlong Award in our Déise county for his services to Waterford G.A.A. A Presidential medal from Croke Park was also presented to Paddy, a worthy recipient for such prestigious accolades.

Tá mo rás rithe, mo phort seinnte beagnach. Pé i dteas an tsamhraidh é nó i bhfuacht an gheimhridh, rinne Pádraig Mac Gearailt a dhícheall ar son Cumann Dungarbháin agus Portláirge. Cé go bhfuil Paddy as radharc anois, ní bheidh sé as aigne.

Solas na bhFlaitheas ort a Phádraig. Is i seilbh ghrámhar Dé go raibh tú go deo.

26 Scór Sinsir Babhta Ceannais na hÉireann Rose Longworth Westmeath Scór loses a Legend—Johnny Hannify, Westmeath Scór PRO

The Thursday afternoon of November 22nd 2018, was a day that the Westmeath Scór followers and indeed Scór followers well behind the Westmeath boundaries, will always remember with great sadness, as the word spread of the passing of one of Scór’s greatest leg- ends, Rose Longworth. For over forty years, Rose was at the helm of Scór in the Lake County and for most of those years held the position of Scór secretary / treasurer and as all of us who were lucky enough to work with her on the Scór committee will vouch, she excelled in that position. Those were the days before technology and everything was done manually. Rose had a great handle on all that she did, let it be secre- Rose Longworth tary or treasurer she always had her reports and books dead on. Her handwriting was something else, sadly a skill that is been lost to the more modern ways.

Rose had a great knowledge of Irish dancing and adjudicated at Scór all over Ireland and at many All-Irelands. She also coached dancing and had great suc- cess in this art, winning many county Scór titles with her club, which she adored, Ballymore. Rose was a great community woman and we know that there are many Scór patrons sitting in this theatre this evening who attended, county, Leinster semi-finals and finals in the beautiful Ballymore Community Centre. Rose and her late husband Joe were the driving force behind this wonderful facility.

She was a prominent member of the ICA and was a founding member of Ballymore CCÉ, which is now one of the strongest branches in the county. This time last year in Sligo, Rose was honoured by Uachtarán C.L.G., John Horan, for her many years of service to Scór down through the years, an honour that she richly deserved.

Scór will be fifty years old this year and it’s sad that Rose won’t be here to cele- brate it with us, as all of us who knew Rose knew she liked a good party. Westm meath Scór Committee are hoping to publish a history of Scór in the county over the past fifty years and they could dedicate a whole chapter on the life of Rose and her involvements in Scór. Unfortunately, I am limited to space in this pro- gramme so we will have to wait for that publication.

On behalf of all Scór followers throughout Westmeath and all over the country we extend our deepest sympathies to Rosie’s family, her son Joe, daughter Áine, granddaughter Dara, son-in-law John, daughter-in-law Joan, sisters Detty, Mullingar, Mary and Ita, England, her nephews and nieces and her large circle of friends. May the beautiful sod of Ballymore weigh light upon you Rose. May you rest in peace. 27

Scór Sinsir Babhta Ceannais na hÉireann Pat Evans An Appreciation

Pat Evans is one of the reasons that Scór in Carrickcruppen continues to exist since its foundation in 1969. A native of Newry and a baker by trade, he married Rita and lived in Bessbrook, Co Armagh for all his married life. He had four children – Catherine, Andrew, Ann-Marie and Bernard – and although Rita and his family were his first love, Scór was certainly his second. Pat ensured that Carrickcruppen par- ticipated annually in Scór na nÓg and Scór Sinsir and was often found holding rehearsals in the clubrooms for novelty acts, singers, dancers and ballad groups – sometimes even in the front sitting room of his own home if need be!

Over the course of the years, he ensured his beloved Car- Pat Evans rickcruppen made their way to many Ulster and All-Ireland Finals and prided himself in mentoring music groups, ballad groups and novelty acts to All-Ireland success in Scór na nÓg. His catchphrase to many generations of competitors when singing was, “paint the picture!”

Having been an Irish dancer himself from a young age, it was no surprise that Pat participated in Rince Foirne and Rince Seit. In 1992, aged 53, he won and All -Ireland title in Rince Seit in Threemilehouse, Co Monaghan. The following year, he made it to the All-Ireland Finals in Rince Foirne and then in 1994 won the Rince Seit again - this time in the Greenglen’s Arena in Millstreet, Co Cork. The pride of winning these All-Ireland titles was secondary to Pat, next to the fact that his daughter Catherine was part of the team with him.

1994 was a very special year for Pat and his family. Not only was it the Golden Jubilee of Carrickcruppen GAA, it was also the Silver Jubilee of Scór. In this year, Carrickcruppen won Rince Seit All-Irelands in both Scór na nOg and Scór Sinsir – the Scór na nÓg team being mentored by his daughter Catherine.

The Scór legacy that Pat has left in Carrickcruppen is clear to be seen, consider- ing that the mentors in the club today are all people who, as children, were men- tored and nurtured in Scór by Pat. In fact, the Ballad Group today consists of three people introduced to Scór and mentored by Pat as children in years past. Pat passed away in November last following a short illness. He will always be remembered by those who knew him as ‘Mr Carrickcruppen’ such was his com- mitment and dedication to the club in Scór. He would be delighted today to see his club represented in Bailéad Ghrúpa and to know that what he created from humble beginnings is still alive and strong. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

32 Scór Sinsir Babhta Ceannais na hÉireann Rince Foirne AN MHUMHAIN: An Caisleán Nua, Tiobraid Árann

Newcastle is a very small and pictur- esque village on the banks of the river Suir at the foot of the Knockmealdown mountains in South Tipperary. Despite being small in size, the club has punched well above its weight in terms of success in Scór competitions at all levels since first taking part in 1973: All Ireland Scór Sinsear titles in Rince Seit (1985 & 1987), Am- hránaíocht Aonair (1992 & 2013) and Bailéad Ghrúpa (1996) were added to Scór na nÓg titles in Rince Seit (1978 & 1981). In recent years Newcastle have be- come a dominant force in the Rince Fóirne competition in Munster having won the senior title for the last two years and the Scór na nÓg title for the last 3 years. Our senior ladies also participated in the Rince Seit in Sligo in 2018. Newcastle is very fortunate to have people involved in our club that are always working to promote our culture in music, song and dance. ULAIDH: Ualtar Ó Gréacháin, An Gleann, Doire C.L.G Watty Graham, An Gleann was officially formed in 1948 and adopted the name of Watty Graham, a local Presbyterian who inspired a local uprising as part of the wider United Irish Rebellion. Upon capture, he, like so many of his compatriots, was exe- cuted in Maghera town on 16th June, 1798. Since formation, Watty Graham’s have evolved into the largest sporting and cultural organisation in the Maghera locality and can boast a proud history of winning County, Provincial and All-Ireland titles on the sporting field and also in the various Scór disciplines. Watty Graham’s have been regularly awarded the title of best Scór club participation in Co. Derry and under the tutelage of mentor Anne Kearney and Cultural Officer Louise Strathern, our Rince Foirne and Rince Seit teams hope to add another two All- Ireland titles to the honours list when they represent club and county in Castlebar on April 13th. Ádh mór oraibh!

These current dancers have all competed in Rince Foirne in Scór na nÓg at different stages. They have come together this year for Scór Sinsir to try and claim the All–Ireland title that has eluded the club since 1997. Tá na cailíní dóchasach go mbeidh an bua acu inniu.

CONNACHTA: Naomh Dominic, Ros Comáin

St.Dominic’s GAA Club in Co. Roscommon draws its members from the surrounding areas of Knockcroghery, St.John’s and Rahara, and fields teams at all age levels in Hurling, Football, Camogie and Ladies Football. St.Dominic’s also boasts a strong Scór tradition, with up to 80 club members competing every year - indeed the Scór na nÓg Club Final is a highlight of the club’s social calendar. In Scór, the club has been very well represented on the stage with county & provincial titles in the Figure & Set Dancing, Solo Singing, Ballad Group, Quiz and Novelty Act/Léiríú Staitse disciplines. Ballinderreen Hurling Club, in South Galway, founded in 1884 is one of the oldest clubs in the Association. It is a proud hurling parish which has pro- duced many fine hurlers over the years, some of which have gone on to play for Galway. Amongst them were Mick Gill (1923, 1924), Joe McDonagh (1980) & Noel Lane (1980, 1987, 1988). One of the club’s finest hours was when the late Joe McDonagh was elected Uachtarán ar Chumann Lúthchléas Gael in 1997 and served until 2000. Camogie is also to the fore in the parish with strong links between both associations.Bhain CLG Bhaile an Doirín, an Bonn Óir i bhFondúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Dhonncha i 2018. Guímid gach rath ar Mhícheal de Búrca sa chomórtas agus bród orainn as i gcónaí. AN MHUMHAIN: Ceann Toirc, Corcaigh Kanturk has been one of the most successful clubs in Co.Cork. The capital of the barony and division of Duhallow, in the north west of the county, cloaked themselves in All Ireland Inter Hurling glory in 2018 and became the first club from the area to ply their trade in the Co. Senior Hurling c’ship. They won the Co. Inter football c’ship in 2017, and crowned it off by being selected Provincial 'Club of the Year'. The home club of Inter County stars Aidan Walsh, and Lorcán McLoughlin. In Scór, the club is accustomed to a certain level of success. In the early years the club won a number of county Set Dancing titles, and got to perform at prestigious events like 'Siamsa Cois Laoi'. Modern day playwriter, Carmel Winters, also represented the club in Scór na nÓg, in Aithriseoireacht. All Ireland success has heretofore eluded Kanturk, but the club are confident that this can change today. The hopes and good wishes of not alone her home club, but all of Co. Cork are with Muireann today as she bids to become only the second Cork person ever to win this prestigious title. Clann na nGael's participation in Scór has been hugely beneficial to the revival of Scór within County Meath over the past few years with members taking part in many disciplines at both Scór na nÓg and Scór Sinsir levels. Following the revival it is with great pride that Brendan has made it to the All-Ireland Final for the second year in a row. Brendan has represented the county in both the Léiriú Stáitse and Aithriseoireacht competitions in previous years at both County and Leinster level and he is delighted and proud to be representing his club in the All-Ireland Scór Sinsir final sa Chomórtas Aithris- eoireachta. His commitment to Scór is to be commended and we wish him all the best. An Mhí abú!

Newcastle is a very small and pictur- esque village on the banks of the river Suir at the foot of the Knockmealdown mountains in South Tipperary. This year the club broke new ground with the first Munster title in the Aithris- eoireacht/Scéalaíocht competition. Treasa McGrath won her first county title in Scór na bPáistí in 2005 and this year won her first Munster senior title. With her own composition, Treasa has entertained and enthralled audiences at each round of Scór this year. An accomplished dancer, who took part in the Rince Seit last year, an injury on the football field prevented Treasa dancing this year, but gave her the opportunity to focus on the Aithriseoireacht instead. Táimid go léir an bhródúil as na gcailíní go léir atá ag glacadh páirt inniu. Go n-éiríonn go geal le rince- oirí Chaisleáin Nua, Treasa agus Cumann Tulach Sheasta sa chomórtas léiriú inniu. St James’ GAA Club in the west Cork parish of Ardfield/Rathbarry was founded in 1892. Situated on the Wild Atlantic Way between Clonakilty and Rosscarbery, our parish was home to P.D. Mehigan – known as ‘Carbery’ – a renowned sports journalist who in 1928 broadcast the first live GAA radio commentary. In 2005 St James’ Junior B hurlers claimed the club’s first county and Munster titles. The club has also enjoyed great success in Scór, with this year’s victory in the Ballad Group section of Scór Sinsir resulting in the club’s first Munster title at any level in Scór. Our hurlers lost in the All-Ireland Junior B Hurling final in 2005, but can these five young ladies now make history by bringing the first All-Ireland title back to St James’. Naomh Séamus Abú!

The club are current Junior Kildare Football Champions and also have a vibrant Ladies Football club and field hurling teams at underage. Milltown has a wonderful history with Scór since we first participated in the early 1980s. From Scór na nÓg to Scór Sinsir, we have competed in all eight Scór categories down through the years, with numerous county titles falling our way, and even a few Leinster ones. Most recently, our Senior Quiz team represented Kildare in last year’s All Ireland final, and, not to be outdone, our Scór na nÓg Quiz team fol- lowed suit in this year’s All Ireland. However, it has been 31 years since a Milltown Léiriú reached these dizzying heights. We have yet to take that elusive All Ireland title back to the Shortgrass...perhaps this will be our year..... #Believe best CONNACHTA: Ail Finn, Ros Comáin

Hailing from Moneyglass in Southwest Antrim, St Ergnat's have seen a revival in Scór in recent years, winning two instrumental music titles in the last four years as well as numerous County titles in various disciplines. Hailing from Kyle GAA Club in County Laois, these five musicians are living proof that traditional Irish music is alive and prevailing in the Midlands of Ireland. Kyle G.A.A are a small Junior Hurling Club nestling in Ballaghmore on the Offaly, Tipperary borders. Proud to fly their club colours of blue & white, Shóna, Siobhán, Ciara, Joe & Aaron have aligned their unwavering dedication, determination and work ethic to reach the Senior Scór All Ireland Final for the first time in the clubs’ history! Kyle G.A.A are heavily involved with Scór in Laois, influenced by our local school, Gaelscoil an tSlí Dala, which has produced talented musicians and participated in Scór na bPáisti finals with great suc- cess. This has led to extra competitors from the club participating in Scór na nÓg and Senior Scór. We have participated in many Laois & Leinster Scór competitions but this is the first time that this quintet has made the break through to the All-Ireland itself. Kyle GAA Club members are proud of the dedication shown by these five club members and wish them well in the Scór finals in Castlebar. Situated along the west Mayo coast, CLG Acla (Achill GAA) is the western- most GAA club in Ireland. Its member- ship comprises many of the inhabit- ants of Achill Island as well as those of the mainland Currane Peninsula. As well as for both male and female, the club embraces all things cultural and has a proud tradi- tion of involvement in Scór at all lev- els. Despite much enthusiasm and effort, a Scór All Ireland title still eludes the club. After a gap of twenty years, it was a source of great joy that a group from the Achill club made it to the Scór na nÓg All Ireland Final (Ceol Uirlise) in Sligo in 2018. Everyone at CLG Acla and throughout the entire parish would like to wish every success to Cian McNamara, brothers Conor and Patrick Cafferkey, Mi- chael Lavelle and Ethan McNea as they take to the stage in The Royal Theatre today. Our involve- ment in Scór dates back to 1973 with representatives of the club participat- ing in Recitation, Instrumental Music and Set Dancing disciplines on the All Ireland stage. We are very proud holders of four All Ireland Scór titles – Christy Duffy won the Recitation title in 1978, our Set Dancers won a title in 2000, Avril Whitney claimed the Recitation title in 2001 in Scór na nÓg with our Set Dancers winning their second Senior title in 2016. We look forward to continued participation and success in Scór.

Aghamore GAA Club is situated in East Mayo and is over 100 years in exist- ence. It is primarily a Football club and competes at senior Level. The club has produced many players of note such as Lyons, Durkin, Bolton, Burke, Alan Freeman, Brendan Harri- son & Fergal Boland. 2016 saw B.Harrison become the first Aghamore player to win an All Star Award. The club has a very strong tradition in Scór. This seed was sown, nurtured and grown single handily by Séamus Ó Dubhthaigh. A name that is well known in the Scór community. His early work in promoting Scór set the foundations for the clubs very first All Ireland Scór na nÓg title in 1990 (Rince Seit). The next Scór na nÓg title did not arrive until 2013 (Ballad Group), with further titles in 2015 & 2016 (Both Rince Seit). With only one appearance in a Scór Sinsir final in 1994, it was 2018 that brought enormous success with both Ceol Uirlse & Rince Seit taking All Ireland glory back to the club. Both of the aforementioned Alan Freeman & Fergal Boland graced the stage of Scór na nÓg prior to their exploits in the red and green jersey. 57 Scór Sinsir Babhta Ceannais na hÉireann Rince Seit AN MHUMHAIN: Lios Uí Chathasaigh, An Clár

While Football has been played in Lissycasey since the early days of the Association, the present club came into being in 1965. The 1994 season proved to be a historic one for the club when we won senior status for the first time as a result of our victory in the intermediate championship final over a hotly fancied Eire Óg side. Lis- sycasey have been taking part in Scór since it first began in 1969 and have won sixty nine Scór na nÓg County titles. Twenty eight Senior Scór County Titles, four Munster Scór na nÓg titles, six Senior Munster Titles, one Scór na nÓg All Ireland title (Novelty Act 2011) and one Scór Sinsir title (Tara McNamara Solo Singing 1994) Kieran Moroney, who is a member of today’s Set dancing team, competed in the Recitation competition at the All Ireland last year. Lissycasey have thirty seven Scór na bPaisti Clare County Titles, twenty two Club of the year Scór na nÓg awards and eight Senior Club of the year awards. ULAIDH: Ualtar Ó Gréacháin, Doire C.L.G Watty Graham, An Gleann was officially formed in 1948 and adopted the name of Watty Graham, a local Presbyterian who inspired a local uprising as part of the wider United Irish Rebellion. Upon capture, he, like so many of his compatriots, was executed in Maghera town on 16th June, 1798.
