1 Annual Report | PB | ANNUAL REPORT ANNUAL REPORT | 1 2019 ANNUAL REPORT ANNUAL 2019 CONTENTS 3 Board Members 4 Event Photos Annual Report David Ellis 2019 President & CEO 5 Financial Data he automobile business remained strong in 2019, and we appreciate all of GLANCDA’s dealer members and their commitment to the work of the association. New Car sales in the Los Angeles area exceeded 500,000 7 Dealer Members T units, and nationally in excess of 17,000,000 units. With this level of output, dealers were able to grow employ- ment levels and best serve their loyal customer bases. The association continued its primary mission of representing all dealers at every level of government. The annual NADA fly in lobbying event was a great chance to remind all the elected officials in Washington D.C. that dealers are the backbone of small business in this country. Perhaps the biggest victory was at the state level — getting AB 179 passed, after narrowly missing in 2018. This bill focused on the franchise protections that new car dealers need to operate consistently and profitably. The retail reimbursement for all warranty and recall work brought state law in California to the same level as most states throughout the country. Protections were also put into place that do not force dealers to do facility upgrades in less than 10 years if more than $250,000 is spent on upgrades. Throughout the state, dealers are all beneficiaries of the work that GLANCDA achieved in partnership with the state association (CNCDA). The internationally acclaimed Los Angeles Auto Show continued its success in 2019. GLANCDA and its dealer members benefited from over 65 new vehicle debuts, of which no fewer than 25 were global debuts. Every year, the 10-day event stimulates the new car market, and Los Angeles County New Car Dealers are fortunate to have the premier North Ameri- can auto show in its own backyard. A significant amount of the revenue the association generates from the proceeds of the Los Angeles Auto Show goes right back into the communities the dealers do business in. GLANCDA made significant financial contributions to com- munity college automotive technology programs throughout the county. This philanthropic activity has been a mainstay of what GLANCDA has done for nearly 50 years. In 2019, GLANCDA hosted career information and job fair events for these automotive technology students. More than 1000 students and instructors met with dealership representatives at eight different events. In late November, GLANCDA hosted one of these events on the opening day of the Los Angeles Auto Show, and over 35 area new car dealerships were represented at this event. It is a pleasure and an honor to serve as President of GLANCDA, and we hope you will consider engaging in the work and events the association hosts in 2020 and beyond. 700 N Central Avenue, Suite 320 Respectfully, Glendale, CA 91203 David Ellis 2 | ANNUAL REPORT ANNUAL REPORT | 3 GLANCDA Board Members GLANCDA BOARD MEMBERS PRESIDENT David Ellis Glendale Dodge Chrysler Jeep VICE PRESIDENT/INCOMING 2021 PRESIDENT Howard Tenenbaum Keyes Automotive Group PRESIDENT VICE PRESIDENT SECRETARY/TREASURER IMMEDIATE PAST PRESIDENT David Ellis Howard Tenenbaum Jeanne Brewer Fritz Hitchcock SECRETARY/TREASURER Glendale Dodge Chrysler Jeep Keyes Automotive Group Acura of Glendale Hitchcock Automotive Resources Jeanne Brewer Acura of Glendale IMMEDIATE PAST PRESIDENT Fritz Hitchcock GLANCDA Directors Hitchcock Automotive Resources GLANCDA Directors Cheri Fleming Valencia Acura Ian Thomas DIRECTOR DIRECTOR DIRECTOR DIRECTOR Thomas Acura Cheri Fleming Ian Thomas Peter Hoffman Darryl Holter Valencia Acura Thomas Acura Sierra Automotive Group Felix Chevrolet Peter Hoffman Sierra Automotive Group Darryl Holter Felix Chevrolet Not Pictured Pete Smith Bob Smith Toyota DIRECTOR DIRECTOR DIRECTOR DIRECTOR Tim Smith Pete Smith Tim Smith Dave Farguson Evan Ellis Bob Smith BMW/Mini Bob Smith Toyota Bob Smith BMW/MINI Center BMW/Mini Alfa Romeo of Glendale Dave Farguson Center BMW/Mini Evan Ellis Alfa Romeo of Glendale | ANNUAL REPORT ANNUAL REPORT | 3 GLANCDA sponsored team from Van Nuys High School participating in National Automotive Technology Competition in April 2019 GLANCDA board members Ian Thomas and Greg Bozzani present support GLANCDA supports Pasadena Community College check to Citrus College Automotive Technology and Repair Program Don and Cheri Fleming (Valencia Acura) Board member John Symes (Symes Automotive GLANCDA Director Darryl Holter (Felix and Peter Hoffman (Sierra Automotive Group, Pasadena) continuing Glancda’s GLANCDA Time Life Dealer Chevrolet) hosts Congresswoman Group) host Congresswoman Katie Hill commitment to supporting non profit organizations Of the year nominee Nannette Barragan (D 44th District) (D 25th District) in the areas the dealers do business. E–NEWSLETTER ISSUE #5 – 2019 A Message From The President s fall and the final quarter of the year approach, new and used car sales have picked up at dealerships on a local and national level. We hope this trend continues for the rest of the year, and the post Labor Day momentum continues strong! TheA association has some really wonderful events planned for October and November (see following pages for details). Being an active paid current member provides discounts and/or complimentary admission to some of these upcoming events so be sure not to miss out! We will continue the push with our elected officials at the city, county, state and federal levels to support or defend against legislation that impacts all new car dealers! We need full membership participation to have the “voice of the dealers” be heard loud and clear. We hope the summer months allowed for some relaxing moments, and we will look to see you at one of these events, or the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. David Ellis GLANCDA President Calif. lawmakers send dealer franchise bill to governor’s desk By Lindsay Vanhulle After a similar bill was vetoed in 2018, California lawmakers have again passed dealer franchise legislation that would in part adjust the reim- bursement rate the retailers receive from auto- makers for warranty and recall service work. With the legislation, backed by the California New Car Dealers Association, going to the gov- ernor’s desk for the second time in two years, auto dealers say they hope their effort won’t end in a veto this time.
