Dates that Yizkor will be recited in 5780:

Wedneday Oct. 9, 2019 - Yom Kippur Monday Oct. 21, 2019 - Shemini Atzeret Thursday April 16, 2020 - Pesach Saturday May 30, 2019 - Shavuot

From the editors…

At this time of year many of us observe the custom of visiting the graves of our loved ones and recite written prayers and the prayers that are in our hearts. We open our hearts and ask their forgiveness for some small incident that may be etched in our memories. Though it may be incidental, and the person may not have even been aware of it, it gnaws at us, and we plead for forgiveness and we feel better admitting truths to ourselves and righting ourselves emotionally. We seek advice from our loved ones for difficult problems and though they physically cannot speak to us we know how they thought and what is right to do in any given situation.

Yom Kippur and the Yizkor prayer is the time when we pray to God and ask forgiveness for straying from the path of . It is the time when we pledge to do better both personally and spiritually.

This year marked the 90th anniversary of the Hebron massacre it also marked the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. These are significant dates in our collective history. We need to remember them as well as other significant dates in our history at which time great harm was done to us. Unfortunately, anti-Semitism is on the rise, not only in Europe but right in our own backyard. There are many evenings where there is a news report of Jews who have been beaten. There have been many cases of swastikas drawn on Synagogues and more importantly shootings in Pittsburgh, Pa. and Poway, California where Jews have been murdered right here in the United States We are under attack. Our strength must come from being unified regardless of affiliation. Jewish unity and support of are our weapons.

In this Yizkor Book we remember those who have fallen in the task of defending our brothers and sisters in Israel and around the world. They are truly among the righteous of our people. We pray that no more will fall in their duty and service to Israel and the Jewish People. We also list those civilians Jews and some non-Jews who have been murdered by terrorists in Israel and around the world. We also should not forget to remember those Jews who fought for the United States of America, our home in the diaspora, in the fight against those dictators and regimes of tyranny who would deny freedom to all citizens of the world who did not worship, or think as they demanded. Their task was no less holy or righteous.

The editors would like to thank the office staff for their help as well as Bob Turner and Larry Solomon. In addition, we would also like to thank Raymond Sasson for all his years of dedicated service to the publishing of this Yizkor Book each year.

We wish you all a L’Shana Tova and G’mar Hatima Tov. May God answer all of our prayers and the prayers of our loved ones. May the names of those recalled here be for a blessing for us all and may God bring peace to the Land of Israel.

Memorial Service for the Departed

There is a time for everything; there is a time for all things under the sun:

a time to be born and a time to die a time to laugh and a time to cry

a time to dance and time to mourn a time to seek and a time to lose

a time to forget and a time to remember.

This day in sacred convocation we remember those who gave us life.

This day we remember those who enriched our life with love and with beauty, with kindness and compassion, with thoughtfulness and understanding.

This day we renew the bonds that bind us to those who have gone the way of all the earth.

As we reflect upon those whose memory moves us this day, we seek consolation, and the strength and the insight born of faith.

Tender as a father with his children, The Lord is merciful with His worshipers.

He knows how we are fashioned; He remembers that we are dust.

The days of man are as grass; he flourishes as a flower in the field.

The wind passes over it and it is gone, and no one can recognize where it grew.

But the Lord’s compassion for His worshipers, His righteousness to children’s children, remain, age after age, unchanging.

Three score and ten our years may number, Four score years if granted the vigor.

Laden with trouble and travail, life quickly passes, it flies away.

Teach us to use all of our days, O Lord, that we may attain a heart of wisdom.

Grant us of Your love in the morning, that we may joyously sing all our days.

When I stray from You, O Lord, my life is as death; but when I cleave to You, even in death I have life.

You embrace the souls of the living and the dead.

The earth inherits that which perishes.

But only the dust returns to dust; the soul, which is God’s, is immortal.

The Lord has compassion for His creatures.

He has planted eternity within our soul, granting us a share in His unending life.

He redeems our life from the grave. During our brief life on earth He gives us choices.

We can cherish hopes, embrace values and perform deeds which death cannot destroy.

May we all be charitable in deed and in thought, in memory of those we love who walk the earth no longer.

May we live unselfishly in truth and love and peace, so that we will be remembered as a blessing, as we this day lovingly remember those whose lives endure as a blessing.

Our generations are bound to each other as children now remember their parents. Love is strong as death as husbands and wives now remember their mates, as parents now remember their children. Memory conquers death’s dominion as we now remember our brothers and sisters, grandparents and other relatives and friends.

The death of those we now remember left gaping holes in our lives. But we are grateful for the gift of their lives. And we are strengthened by the blessings which they left us, by precious memories which comfort and sustain us as we recall them this day.

Each congregant reads silently the appropriate passages among those which follow. Personal meditations may also be added.

We rise.

The rabbi reads aloud, in memory of congregants who died during the past year. We lovingly recall the members of our congregation who have passed away since we gathered in this sanctuary on last Yom Kippur. They have a special place in our hearts. We pray this day that all who have sustained the loss of loved ones in the year gone by be granted comfort and strength.

Exalted, compassionate God, comfort the bereaved families of this congregation. Help all of us to perpetuate the worthy values in the lives of those no longer with us, whose names we respectfully recall:

(names are read) May their memory endure as a blessing. And let us say: Amen.

Chanted by Hazzan In memory of the six million

Exalted, compassionate God, grant perfect peace in Your sheltering Presence, among the holy and the pure, to the souls of all of our brethren, men, women and children of the House of Israel who were slaughtered and burned. May their memory endure, inspiring truth and loyalty in our lives. May their souls thus be bound up in the bond of life. May they rest in peace. And let us say: Amen. In memory of all the departed

Exalted, compassionate God, grant perfect peace among the holy and the pure, in Your sheltering Presence, to the souls of all our beloved who have gone to their eternal home. May their memory endure as inspiration for deeds of charity and goodness in our lives. May their souls thus be bound up in the bond of life. May they rest in peace. And let us say: Amen.

Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.

He gives me repose in green meadows

He leads me beside the still waters to revive my spirit.

He guides me on the right path, for that is His nature.

Though I walk in the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no harm, for You are with me.

Your staff and Your rod comfort me.

You prepare a banquet for me in the presence of my foes.

You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

Surely goodness and kindness shall be my portion all the days of my life.

And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

TEACH US TO USE ALL OF OUR DAYS

The days of man are as grass; he flourishes in the field.

The wind passes over it and is gone, and no one can recognize where it grew.

But the Lord’s compassion for His worshippers, His righteousness to children’s children, remain, age after age, unchanging.

Three score and ten our years may number, four score years if granted the vigor.

Laden with trouble and travail, Life quickly passes, it flies away.

What are mortals, eternal God, that You should be mindful of them?

What are mortals, that You should take note of them, that You have made them little less than angels?

The sounds of infants attest to Your power, the magnificence of life reflects Your glory.

The heavens display Your splendor. What majesty is Yours throughout the world!

Teach us to use all the of our days, O Lord, that we may attain a heart of wisdom.

Grant us Your love in the morning, that we may joyously sing all our days.

THE CROWN OF A GOOD NAME

There are three crowns, our sages taught: The crown of Torah, the crown of priesthood, And the crown of royalty; But the crown of a good name excels them all.

“Blessed is the person who lives with a good name And departs this world with a good name.”

Of such a person did the Bible say: “A good name is to be treasured above precious oil.”

Wealth, like health, may pass away, But a good name can live on forever.

It can adorn a person throughout life; It can be bequeathed as a precious inheritance,

Conferring honor on family and friends, Inspiring and challenging those who carry on.

Therefore our ancient Sages taught: “The righteous need no monuments; Their good deeds are their memorials.”

The earth of the grave does not cover them; The hand of time does not erase them.

The kindness they have shown, the love they have given, Remain in everlasting remembrance.

Their achievements are more lasting than granite, Their devotion is an enduring legacy.

In Memory of those American Jews who died fighting for freedom and justice in all of America’s wars.

MEMORIAL PRAYER FOR SERVICEMEN AND WOMEN

O God full of compassion, grant perfect rest beneath the cover of Your Presence to all who have bravely laid down their lives for our country. Shelter them among the holy and pure, who are as radiant as the luminous firmament.

O source of compassion, bring the ever near to You that their souls be bound up in the bond of eternal life, as are the souls of the righteous.

And the work of righteousness shall be peace, and the effect of righteousness, quietness and confidence forever.

Nation shall not lift up sword against nation; neither shall they learn war anymore. Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.

AMEN

Rina Shnerb (17), a resident of Lod, was murdered when terrorists detonated an IED device near Dani's Spring, a popular tourist and recreation site situated near the settlement of Dolev where she was hiking. Her father and elder brother who were with her were both seriously wounded

""- THE LEGACY OF RABBI AKIVA & ROI KLEIN By Yossi Katz

In the year 132 C.E. the great Jewish general Shimon Bar Kochba led a 3 year revolt for Jewish freedom against the mighty Roman Empire. While the immediate causes of the revolt were the Romans' outlawing of "brit- milah"(circumcision) and their decision to rebuild as a pagan city called Aelia-Capitolina, perhaps the greatest cause of the revolt was the undying Jewish desire to be a free people in their own land. General Bar Kochba was supported by the greatest Rabbi in Israel- Rabbi Akiva, whose students became his bravest soldiers. His guerilla tactics frustrated and outsmarted the Romans. Bar Kochba liberated Jerusalem and even minted silver coins with a picture of the Jewish Temple and the words in Hebrew: "YEAR ONE FOR THE FREEDOM OF ISRAEL". In the end, Rome feared slave nations around the world would be inspired by Bar Kochba to rise up and fight for their freedom. Emperor Hadrian sent 8 Roman Legions from around the world including their best general, Julius Severus, who was in Britain at the time. The Romans, after 3 1/2 years, eventually crushed the revolt killing 600,000 Jews including Bar Kochba, who died heroically in battle at the last fortress called . Hadrian then outlawed and tried to annihilate the Jewish People. He renamed Israel: "Palestine", Latin for Philistines, a people that had disappeared a thousand years earlier. His goal was to make the world forget the Jews ever had a country of their own. Rabbi Akiva and the ten leading Rabbis in Israel were captured and executed in Caesarea. One Rabbi was wrapped in a Torah scroll and burnt at the stake and Rabbi Akiva was raked over with iron combs. As he was tortured he smiled and his students, who were forced to watch the execution, cried out in wonder, "Rabbi, how do you smile?" Akiva answered, "It is written, 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul'...even when thy soul is taken from thee!" Then Akiva, feeling his life slip away, cried out the SHEMA YISRAEL prayer, "HEAR O ISRAEL, THE LORD OUR GOD, THE LORD IS ONE". Akiva died on the word "ONE" but along with Bar Kochba, left our people a legacy of courage, strength and Jewish commitment that would fuel our modern-day struggle for independence in Israel.

Two thousand years later the courage of Bar Kochba and the spirit of Rabbi Akiva continue to live on in the soldiers of TZAHAL. In this recent war in Lebanon against the murderous Hezbollah our soldiers have distinguished themselves with countless acts of bravery & heroism. The most moving story perhaps is of Major Roi Klein, from the settlement of Eli, who was the Deputy-Battalion Commander of the 51st Battalion of the Golani Infantry Brigade. Major Klein grew up in Raanana but moved to Eli after studying in the Bnei David . He was educated on the ideals & values of love & commitment to Torah, the Jewish people and the State of Israel. He saw his service in Golani as fulfillment of his Jewish obligations. He was loved and admired by all his soldiers and was designated for promotion in TZAHAL. On July 26, 2006, a day before his 31st birthday he took part with his unit in the fierce fighting in the Hezbollah stronghold of Bint Jabil. As they cleaned out terrorist gun nests in house to house fighting, a Hezbollah grenade was thrown at a group of the Golani soldiers. It seemed they all faced certain death, when their beloved commander, Roi Klein screamed,"SHEMA YISRAEL- Hear O'Israel the Lord our God, the Lord is One", and dived on the live grenade. Klein died in the explosion but saved the lives of the many soldiers with him in the house. He died on the word, "ONE", just like his teacher Rabbi Akiva. Roi Klein was a sensitive caring soul who was loved by all who knew him. He was a brilliant and outstanding student of engineering and also played the saxophone. He is survived by his young wife Sara and his two sons, Gilad (3) and Yoav (6 months old). Klein was buried in the National Military Cemetery on Mt Herzl in Jerusalem on July 27, 2006. It was his 31st birthday.

Like with the Bar Kochba Revolt, cynical Jews in Israel and abroad will debate the merits of this war and of our national & military leadership for years to come. Of course there are issues there that need to be investigated and lessons that must be learnt so we can continue in our struggle to preserve our freedom in Israel. I believe, however, that this recent war has shown us that our people are blessed with the finest generation of Jewish youth in 2000 years. It would be wise for us to honor the courage of our youth and the memories of our fallen heroes so that their legacy will never die. From Akiva to Roi Klein, it is that very legacy that has been the secret of our survival.

Golani Brigade

Captain Uri Lavie, a company commander in the briefing his soldiers – nine months into their military service – a few minutes before joining the battle against Hizballah terrorists in Southern Lebanon (Ha’aretz, July 27,2006)

“This is our time to rise to the challenge, put on the helmets and the bullet proof vests and make sure that the northern border is secure. We shall fulfill any mission in a most effective manner, in face of any challenge.

If we shall not fulfill our mission we shall forfeit the right to exist.

We shall not lose this war which we did not start.

Our duty is to serve as a defense force of the Jewish People, and to secure the peace of mind of the civilians in northern Israel.

If we shall not do it, no one will do it in our place.

For two thousand years we waited for the establishment of the Jewish State, and we are not going to roll back because a bunch of terrorists assume that they can scare us.

He who cannot defend Liberty does not deserve Liberty.

If we will not be able to fight until our last drop of blood, in order to secure the Liberty of our People on its own soil, our People will not enjoy Liberty.

There is time to talk and there is time to act. At this time, when missiles and Katyushas afflict the North all the way to , in addition to the two kidnapped soldiers, the ten soldiers killed and the dozens injured, it is time to fight and not talk. We are the force, which has been chosen to fight, and we shall perform in the most effective manner.

I will be the first one to enter the battle and the last one to come out, and will do everything in my power to get you out alive and well. On Friday, with G-d’s help, we will rejoin with our families. However, I cannot do it alone. Once we cross the northern border, you should exercise full alert and full responsibility toward your fellow soldier.”

May their place of rest be in paradise. Merciful One, Okeep their souls forever alive under Thy protective wings. The Lord being their heritage, may they rest in peace, for they shalt rest and stand up for their allotted portion at the end of the days, and let us say, Amen.]

[Soldiers are weeping. Rabbi Goren sounds the shofar. Sound of gunfire in the background.]

90 years later, last-known Jewish survivor recalls Hebron massacre

Time has not dimmed the powerful memories that 98-yearold Avraham Kiryati has of the moment his grandfather Eliyahu Capilouto was stabbed during the Hebron massacre of 1929.

“My grandfather was dressed just like the Arabs,” said Kiryati. “He went out to see what was going on. They [the rioters] pushed him inside and stabbed him on the side of his body.” Kiryati was then a boy of eight.

He and his 18-year-old uncle Moshe Capilouto were in their grandparents’ home as Arabs made their way through the Hebron streets calling for Jews to be slaughtered.

The two boys escaped out the back door of their grandparents’ home, safely making their way to the family chicken coup where they hid until it was safe.

When they came out of hiding, they found Eliyahu lying on the floor in a pool of blood.

Kiryati recalled how his grandmother Rivka had blocked the wound with coffee grounds.

Sitting in a reclining corner chair in the living room of his Jerusalem home, wearing glasses and black sandals, the white haired nonagenarian explains how his life is one long map of the history of mandate Palestine and the state of Israel. In spite of this, Kiryati said, he often shies away from media interviews.

This week, however, ahead of the 90th anniversary of the August 24 massacre that decimated Hebron’s ancient Jewish community, Kiryati opened his door to journalists. He is the last known survivor of the massacre who can still recall the fatal events of that day, in which Arab rioters killed 67 Jews.

He is a descendant of Jews who escaped the Spanish inquisition, settling first in and then in Hebron.

His grandfather Eliyahu was a well-known carpenter and electrician, so well respected that he was even hired to work in the Tomb of the Patriarchs at the time when Jews were not allowed into the building – for 700 years, they could only pray up to the seventh step on the outside of what was then a mosque.

Eliyahu built a home a slight distance away from what Kiryati called the Jewish “ghetto,” on a road that led to Gaza.

Kiryati’s parents had moved to Jerusalem, but had sent him to spend some of his summer vacation with his grandparents, a decision that placed him in the wrong place at the wrong time.

In a separate interview, Kiryati’s nephew, Yossi Saness, also described how in that moment Eliyahu and his wife, Rivka, a gold dealer, had initially stood outside their house to try and dissuade the rioters from entering. After her husband was stabbed, she was able to bribe the rioters to leave by offering them gold she had stashed in the house, Saness said.

“All the survivors were taken first to the police station and then to Jerusalem,” Kiryati said.

In the following months, his grandfather died of his wounds.

When he thinks about it now, he said, the events of that day “is more or less what happened in the Holocaust.”

In the early 1930s, his grandmother Rivka was among a small number of families who returned to the city and attempted to resurrect the Jewish community in the biblical city. Their efforts came to naught, as the British insisted that they leave in 1936.

Kiryati grew up in Jerusalem and joined the Hagana. He worked with the British and was also in the British army.

Around 1942 he returned to Hebron with the British and took a photograph of the Jewish cemetery, which was later used to locate the graves of the massacre victims.

In advance of the interview he had placed a copy of the photograph on the coffee table, along with a copy of his Palestinian passport.

Initially he went under his father’s last name of Capilouto, but prime minister David Ben-Gurion insisted that he had to change it to a Hebrew one.

When learning of Kiryati’s family history, he suggested that he should take a name related to the city, coming up with Kiryati as a derivative from Kiryat Arba.

“He attached Kiryati to my name, and I am happy about that,” said Kiryati.

Kiryati fought in the War of Independence, during which he met and married his wife, Miriam. He continued to serve in the army, including in the Six Day War and the Yom Kippur War, attaining the rank of major.

During the Six Day War he was part of the unit that liberated Gush Etzion and Hebron from the Jordanians, who ruled the West Bank from 1948 to 1967.

Together with an uncle he went to Hebron to look for the Jewish cemetery, but instead of graves they found a tomato garden.

After Jews returned to live in Hebron in 1979, Kiryati said, he never considered returning to live there. He remained in Jerusalem, where he was also the deputy director-general of the Economy and Industry Ministry, and an attorney with a law practice.

Hebron, however, has always been close to his heart, and he supports the continued Jewish presence in the city. He believe that Hebron, like all of Judea and Samaria, should be under Israeli sovereignty.

“I hope that I will be able to see peace,” he said, but not the kind of peace that comes from territorial concessions.

Kiryati knows first-hand the danger of what happens when one “opens the door” to Arabs. He is a firm believer that today as then, the want to drive the Jews into the sea. “Hebron must be in part of Israel,” he said. “I have learned from the past to be prepared. We do not have any choice but to remain strong.”
