Nevertheless, glimmers of light emerge from that general obscurity and make clear that, as in later societies, drinking in quantity was commonplace among Rome’s population by the high Classical age. This silence on lower-class drinking initially seems especially surprising because Roman authors certainly observed and at times criticized alcohol’s effects on their peers. As early as the mid-2nd century BCE, a certain Gaius Titius argued for the passage of the Lex Fannia, a sumptuary law, because so many men were carrying out business in the Forum while drunk.3 Cicero likewise inveighed against his opponents by accusing them 1 Noted by D’Arms (1995: 304-17). 2 Buxton (1868: 27, 54). 3 Macrob. Sat. 3.16.14-15: describens enim homines prodigos in forum ad iudicandum ebrios commeantes, quaeque soleant inter se sermocinari sic ait: ludunt alea studiose, delibuti unguentis, scortis stipati.…inde 1 of drunkenness and identified such drunkenness as a form of insanity.4 Such aspersions were not uncommon: Seneca criticized one of Caesar’s assasins, Tillius Cimber, for being a violent drunkard, and the young Octavian used Antony’s association with Dionysus as an excuse to accuse him of orgiastic drunkenness.5 The vast majority of references to drunkenness was in reference to upper-class behavior and is usually indistinguishable from broader, moralizing observation and criticism. By Latin III, the students should be reading unaltered texts in Latin. It is important that the students read texts written by Romans, instead of teachers. Students can learn information about culture and language from reading the words of the Romans. This project is designed to help young students navigate their way through an authentic text. This unit has been designed to take about 12 days. The lesson plans are laid out for group work. This Petronius project lends itself to be incorporated into a larger Roman author unit. I incorporate Petronius as one of the six Romans authors whom I expose my students during a semester. This unit could be longer. Students could translate and discuss only one page a day with daily review of the previous page. Using the suggested extension activities would also extend the unit. It is important to read and discuss the introduction with the students in order to familiarize them with the time period, author, and genre of the Satyricon.

Wiseman Prompted by Chrystina Häuber’s seminal work on the eastern part of the mons Oppius, this article offers a radical reappraisal of the evidence for the ‘gardens of Maecenas’. Some very long-standing beliefs about the location and nature of the horti Maecenatiani are shown to be unfounded; on the other hand, close reading of an unjustly neglected text provides some new and unexpected evidence for what they were used for. The main focus of the argument is on the relevance of the horti to the development of Roman performance culture. It is intended to contribute to the understanding of Roman social history, and the method used is traditionally empirical: to collect and present whatever evidence is available, to define as precisely as possible what that evidence implies, and to formulate a hypothesis consistent with those implications. Da un lato quest’operazione ha portato alla dimostrazione di come alcune convinzioni di lungo corso sulla localizzazione e natura degli horti Maecenatiani siano infondate; dall’altro lato, una lettura serrata di un testo ingiustamente trascurato fornisce alcune nuove e inaspettate prove delle modalità di utilizzo degli horti. Il principale focus della discussione risiede nella rilevanza degli horti allo sviluppo della cultura romana della performance.     Finding Millet in the Roman World Charlene Murphy, PhD University College London, Institute of Archaeology, 31-34 Gower Street, London, UK WC1H 0PY [email protected] Abstract Examining the evidence for millet in the Roman empire, during the period, circa 753BC-610AD, presents a number of challenges: a handful of scant mentions in the ancient surviving agrarian texts, only a few fortuitous preserved archaeological finds and limited archaeobotanical and isotopic evidence. Ancient agrarian texts note millet’s ecological preferences and multiple uses. Recent archaeobotanical and isotopic evidence has shown that millet was being used throughout the Roman period. The compiled data suggests that millet consumption was a more complex issue than the ancient sources alone would lead one to believe. Using the recent archaeobotanical study of Insula VI.I from the city of Pompeii, as a case study, the status and role of millet in the Roman world is examined and placed within its economic, cultural and social background across time and space in the Roman world. The period of the Principate was characterised by a number of changes in nearly all areas of public life, i.e. in the political, economic, social and reli- gious sphere. These occurred as an unavoidable, and in some cases absolutely natural result of systemic transformations. The new model of government, initiated by Augustus, where power was in the hands of the ruler with little involvement of other state authorities, required appropriate principles to be introduced for the functioning of both the office of Princeps and other co- -governing centres. Although Augustus sought to abandon the republican order, he was well aware of the fact that he would only succeed if his power was se- cured within the frames of this system1. Hence, he maintained Plebeian As- semblies and the Senate, as well as most of the clerical positions, although he divested all of those bodies of many of their previous powers. This was par- ticularly clear in the case of the magistrates whose functions he assumed him- self or delegated to offices which he established2. The principles in accordance with which these were exercised differed in almost every respect from the models existing in the Republic. This applied in the same way to rotation in office, collegiality, gratuitousness and eligibility. Different rules were also followed in selecting candidates for the specific positions. Seeking to limit the power of the Senate, Augustus decided to establish a counter-measure for this body by filling imperial offices mainly with representatives of Ordo Equester3.

It contributes to our understanding of Roman accounting in several notable ways. The style and approach of Roman documents are now categorized to reflect differing levels of complexity and sophistication. With the aid of this delineation, and by comparison with the practices of various other premodern societies, we can now more readily appreciate the distinct attributes present at each level in Roman accounting practices. Additionally, due to the greater accessibility of Roman accounting documents in recent years – in particular, through John Matthews’ work on the Journey of Theophanes, Dominic Rathbone’s study of the Heroninos archive, and the reading of the Vindolanda tablets -- it becomes easier to appreciate such differences among the few larger caches of accounting documents. Moreover, the dissertation seeks to distinguish varying grades of accountant. Above all, it emphasizes the need to separate the functions of accounting and auditing, and to gauge the essential characteristics and roles of both. In both regards, it is claimed, the Roman method showed competency. The dissertation further shows how economic and accounting theory has influenced perceptions about Roman accounting practices.

    Patrizio Pensabene Architectural Spolia and Urban Transformation in Rome from the Fourth to the Thirteenth Century Summary This paper is a historical outline of the practice of reuse in Rome between the th and th century AD. It comments on the relevance of the Arch of Constantine and the Basil- ica Lateranensis in creating a tradition of meanings and ways of the reuse. Moreover, the paper focuses on the government’s attitude towards the preservation of ancient edifices in the monumental center of Rome in the first half of the th century AD, although it has been established that the reuse of public edifices only became a normal practice starting in th century Rome. Between the th and th century the city was transformed into set- tlements connected to the principal groups of ruins. Then, with the Carolingian Age, the city achieved a new unity and several new, large-scale churches were created. These con- struction projects required systematic spoliation of existing marble. The city enlarged even more rapidly in the Romanesque period with the construction of a large basilica for which marble had to be sought in the periphery of the ancient city. At that time there existed a highly developed organization for spoliating and reworking ancient marble: the Cos- matesque Workshop.
