En cuestión de minutos se pueden ver más altos, más bajos, más ll enos, más esbelt os o completamente desfigurados. Se es todo menos uno mi smo. Tal ocurriría si caminásemos al lago del mismo sitio con la ilusión de ve r nu estra imagen; bastaría un poco de viento. arro­ jar una pequeña piedra.. y el agua estancada. ahora ll ena de ondas reflejaría un a fantasía del presente, una di slOrsión . ¿Por qué esa necesidad humana de ve rse a sí mi smo, y por qué también el miedo de ve rn os como somos? ¿Por qué a veces el temor y otras, paradójicamente, la comodid ad de andar por la vida con la idea que los "otros" tienen de "nosotros"? En el número 13 de Tema y Variaciones de L¡¡era/JI/V tu vi­ mos nuestra primera aprox imación al mundo multilingual que es el nuestro; y la mirada se posó en nu estras comuni dades indígenas con sus respectivas lenguas: náhuatl , tsotsil , mazaleco. hhnañhú. zapoteco y maya, enlre olras. Esto haría que más tarde 11 nu estros ojos se posaran en otra realidad, en otro espejo bilingüe y diglósico en que entraran en contacto el inglés y el español. Sin duda tocábamos otra ll aga al interior del país pero res­ catábamos ot ra parte de nu estra hi storia al pensar en el otro México tan cercano y tan distante, que aunque nos cueste re­ conocerl o ya no es México. As í, la mi rada cruzaba la frontera norte y veía a los hombres de bronce hablar en in glés -su lengua-, entonces se aguzaba el oído para esc uchar cadenci as invent adas y prestar atención a las hi storias que unas veces hermanaban y otras se despedían. Fue así como nació Tema y Variaciones No. /4 "Espejos y reflejos: literatura chicana". Tuvimos el agrado de contar con el entusiamo de nacionales y extranjeros, todos tenían un refl ejo del espejo para obsequiar, y tal vez juntándolos todos podía obtenerse la imagen más aproximada. Hubo participantes de México, Estados Unidos, España, Venezuela, Alemania, y Ar­ gentina. La convocatoria estu vo abierta en inglés y español, y algunos escritores chi canos decidieron colaborar en este último idioma. A diferencia de otros números quisimos inaugurar este año 2,000 con algunas modificaciones en nu estra rev ista, y a propós ito de la divulgación del tema, tu vimos una variación: dos de los artíc ul os aparecen en inglés. y se cuenta con la versión bilingüe de la presentación, las notas bio-bibliográfi cas y los .. abslrac/i'. El número abre con el artículo del Dr. Axel Ramírez (figura clave en Méx ico en torno a la divulgación de temas chicanos) y gracias a ell o el lector puede tener un a vi sión general de la suerte que ha vivido la literatura chi cana en Méx ico, los mo­ mentos por los que ha pasado, y los fac tores que inevitablemen­ te han repercutido en su limitada divulgación. Los artículos siguientes tienden a seguir un a línea de lo general a lo particul ar y así se transita de los aspectos lingüísti cos 12 lema y ua riaciones 14 (Judith Hernández) y culturales (Tomás Bernal A1 anís) a la palabra viva (una entrevista con Lucha Corpi de Javier Perucho) relacionada también con la novela detectivesca que aborda Marcus Embry para demostrar que la temática chicana se en­ cuentra cada vez más inmersa en la corri ente prin cipal de la literatura estadounidense. La autora Sheila Ortiz TayJor nos habla de su novela Coac/¡e/la donde pueden observarse los temas de actualidad abordados por la comunidad chicana que cada vez ti enden a ser más univer­ sales. en este caso el SIDA. La atención viene a centrarse después con la literatura fe ­ menina (tema tratado por Patricia Casasa) para seguir con los análi sis poéti cos. el primero de identidad (Alejandra Sánchez Valencia) en un poema clave dentro del movimiento chi cano " Yo soy Joaquín" de Corky Gonzáles. José Francisco Conde Ortega ofrece un análi sis de la obra del poeta Tino Villanueva. Aunque Pocho fue considerada la primera novela chicana, una vez que se encontró el manuscrito de Las avelllllras de Don Chipo/e ... ésta fu e considerada como la novela más anti gua dent ro de tal literatura. Joaquina Rodríguez Plaza encuadra el tema dentro de la novela picaresca y de manera mu y novedosa ob­ sequia al lector un análi sis del léxico México-E.U. empleado en la década de 1920, así no es de extrañarse que también nos haga llegar algunas de las canciones a que se hace referencia en la novela. Oscar Mata realza la trayectoria de lo picaresco a lo épico al hacer un parangón entre Las oven/u ras de Don C/lipo/e ... y Peregrinos de Aztlán, siguiendo por esta temáti ca Vi cente Fran­ cisco Torres analiza la obra de Miguel Méndez. Se presentan entonces dos obras de carácter totalmente di­ ferente, una escrita por un mexicano en torno a lo chicano (estudio que reali zó Alejandra Herrera), y otra escrita por un chi cano que Alejandra Sán ch el Valenc ia 13 nada tiene qu e ve r con "lo chi cano", tal es el caso de John Rechy (Ignac io Trejo Fuentes). En la rec reación hi stórica y de voces migran te s nos encon­ tramos con el anális is de K/ai/ City ... por Ezequiel Maldonado, para dar un salt o y con el trabajo de Isabel Díaz rescatar el peiformance como otro tipo de lectura, y el artículo de Nicolás Amoroso que nos muestra la literatura ll evada al cin e.

Treviño Investigadora independiente [email protected] Recibido: 15/02/2018 – Aceptado: 05/06/2018 DOI: 10.17533/udea.lyl.n74a06 Abstract: This article analyzes the concept of generation as a methodological tool for con- temporary literary research, advancing its use to characterize aesthetic trends in the artistic production of diverse groups of coetaneous writers. By providing a cultural history of the uses of the category in Mexican literary studies, it examines the applicability and limitations of the concept of generation, highliting the importance of contextual and diachronic aware- ness in its deployment. This study then advocates for an understanding of a generation as a porous sociobiological category that groups several people under a similar Weltanschauung. It contends that the heterogeneity of Mexican cultural nationalism generates an equivocal ground for the literature of the generation of writers born in the 1960s and 1970s, and argues for the consideration of the cluster of Mexican authors born in these decades as a generation. A partir de una historia cultural de los usos de la categoría en los estudios literarios mexicanos, se examinan la aplicabilidad y limitaciones del concepto, recalcando la importancia de la conciencia textual y diacrónica en la aplicación de dicha categoría ana- lítica.

Calderón, Chair This dissertation studies the socio-cultural connections of the United States and Mexico’s Pan-African selected twentieth- and twenty-first century sites of struggle through literature, film, and music. Novels and movies such as La negra Angustias (1948/1950), Imitation of Life (1933/1959), Angelitos negros (1948/1970), Como agua para chocolate saga (1989, 2016, 2017), and film (1992), as well as music of racial activism by Mexican and Afro-Latino artists such as Negro José and Afro-Chicano band Third Root, are all key elements of my project to study the formation and understanding what of Mexico’s Tercera Raíz entails historically, politically, and culturally. I focus my study on the development of black racial consciousness in twentieth-century Mexican cultural life, and I consequently explore the manner in which Mexican writers, filmmakers and artists have managed the relationship between Afro-Mexicans and majority ii populations of white and mestizo Mexicans, as well as the racial bridge existent between the United States’ black history, and Mexico’s Third Root.

Section 2 concentrates on two recent series of travel-chronicles commissioned by Alianza Editorial Mexicana and the Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (1989-1997). The purpose of this section is to examine the variety of contemporary, and possibly postmodern, approaches to this stubbornly realist and traditional genre. The process usually includes some degree of contrasting with neighbors or ideal models. Nations develop in the context of other nations. –Juan D. Bruce-Novoa A nation or group of people creates connections to others who are part of the same group through shared images and symbols. According to Benedict Anderson (1983), the nation is “an imagined political community” and “it is imagined because the members of even the smallest nation will never know most of their fellow-members, meet them, or even hear of them, yet in the minds of each lives the image of their communion” (6). Thus, each nation or community is unified by common foundational myths, the stories it tells and how it relates its past in stories. However, the images that unite one group of people also work to distinguish and differentiate communities from one another.

  • Performing the Mexican Revolution in Neoliberal Times
    ABSTRACT Since the time of the Mexican Revolution of 1910, images associated with this nation-defining event have been presented in an array of media and cultural productions. Within the past two decades these images have been re-imagined, re-coded and re/de- constructed in reaction to social and cultural changes associated with a crisis of political legitimation and the demise of hegemonic revolutionary ideology, as espoused by the long-ruling Party of the Institionalized Revolution (PRI), amid the generalized implementation of neoliberal policies in the county. My dissertation argues that the ascendance of neoliberalism, with the opening of Mexican economic and political systems, has resulted in changes in the socio-cultural work performed by the Revolution- Nation-Gender triad. This trinity, solidified in the post-Revolutionary national imaginary, weaves the three notions together such that as hegemonic discourses of Revolutionary nationalism enter in crisis, discourses of gender are also destabilized. The dissertation consists of three main sub-arguments. First, I argue that the discourse(s) surrounding Revolutionary heroes has been integral to the (re)definition of the Mexican nation and that analyzing recodings of this discourse through the example of Emiliano Zapata reveals a destabilization of hegemonic nationalism. These changes have allowed alternatives to surface both in Mexico and across the border as part of a recoded ii transnational Revolutionary nationalism. As cracks opened in the Revolutionary edifice allowing alternatives to emerge, they have also opened space for alternative gender discourses. I next argue that a close analysis of representations of masculine gender roles as manifested in a variety of cultural texts, specifically through Revolutionary icons Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata, reveals a crisis of the macho archetype in the contemporary Mexican nation.

Short stories, novels, documentaries, plays, testimonial literature and films on the Mexican women at the U.S.-Mexico border are crucial to the understanding of gendered constructions at la frontera, as they formulate a metacommentary to a variety of complex issues ‘on the ground.’ That is to say, the portrayals of border women unquestionably attest to often-clashing perspectives on culture, nation, sexuality and class. This dissertation focuses on the following texts: Chapter 1 centers on Ciudad Juárez, examining Alicia Gaspar de Alba’s novel Desert Blood: The Juárez Murders (2005) and the documentary film La Batalla de las Cruces (2005), directed by Rafael Bonilla. These texts have been chosen because their portrayals of juarense women address the discourse of victimization from different perspectives within the context of the hundreds of murders of women that have afflicted this city with impunity since 1993. These texts reflect the paradoxes that emerge either from underlining the helpless condition of the victims or from creating a public persona for the activists campaigning against the murders.

    MEXICO CULTURE FACTS Mexican culture is the fusion of European, African, and Indigenous cultures. Today, Mexican culture is a product of centuries of mixing between Indigenous, African, and Spanish populations during the Colonial period. The mixing, known commonly as mestizaje, produced a unique cultural identity that makes up the basis for modern-day Mexico. This is prevalent in every aspect of Mexican life, which includes food, clothing, art, music, and even language. Mexican Independence Day is not Cinco de Mayo. Mexican Independence Day is celebrated on September 16th. Celebrations begin on the eve of the holiday with the Grito, a ceremony commemorating the Shout of Dolores in 1810 which gave way to the War of Independence. This is followed by fireworks, music and dancing. The next day, parades take place in most major cities. It analyzes representations of collective bodies and suggests that these bodies illustrate oppression and resistance in their historical context, which coincides with the beginning of a period of massive modernization in Mexico. I aim to develop a reading that interprets this imagery of collectives, unusual bodies, and blindness as more than symbols of oppression. By examining this imagery alongside representations of pilgrimage, alternative modes of motherhood, and experiences such as miracles that figuratively connect bodies, I propose that these images challenge their historical context, and can be read as a gesture towards resistance. Novels and short stories by José Revueltas, Juan Rulfo, Rosario Castellanos and Vicente Leñero present collectives, blindness and unusual bodies. My reading of their works connects these textual bodies to oppression within their historical context, in particular, by the government, intellectuals, the medical system, the Catholic Church, family structure, the landholding system, and the land’s heat, wind and drought. These representations de- individualize characters, and, as such, destroy the ideal of the modern subject who would effect ii change through individual agency.

Course Description In this course, you will critically read and discuss short stories by the most important contemporary Mexican authors, focusing particularly on the second half of the 20th and the first few years of the 21st century. Through readings, lectures, and class discussions you will develop knowledge regarding the distinctive traits of Mexican literature, significant authors, and important trends and developments in the contemporary period.
