For the last two-years he attended St. Maryts Lyceum, Covington, whence he graduated in June 1935. His high school education was acquired at St. Xavier, Cincinnati. September 1, 1939 the author entered Milford Novitiate of the Society of Jesus where his academic work was accredited by Xavier University, Cincinnati. August 16, 1943 he entered West Baden College which is affiliated with Loyola University. From the latter institution he obtained the degree of Bachelor of Arts in June 1944. Its purpose will be to discover the content, the origin and development, and the pers~al influence on the author himself of those writings. The first chapter will be devoted to the nature and history of consolatory writings. After that the doctrine of Oicero on consolation will be set forth in chapter two. In the third chapter the souroes of Oicero's thought will be examined and the originality shown by the Roman will be demonstrated. For this reason it is natural that a considerable literature on consolation should arise as soon as men were advanced enough to cultivate letters. Hence arose the consolatio, first in Greek, then in Latin. The consolatio may be described as a literary type written according to standard conventions which had for its purpose the alleviation of another's sorrow. A more intimate knowledge of the consola tio is best acquir'ed by a brief study of the history and by analyzing an actual example of the type.... Therefore this chapter will first develop the history of consolatory writings and then analyze one of the later Latin works which are the only conventional works still extant. Let ua begin then, with a brief history of consolatory writings. It must not be supposed that no consolatory wrft­ ing existed before the advent of the formal consolatio. Actual consolatory writing--while not in the strict literary form of later centuries--goes back as far as Homer. In the 1 2 twenty-fourth book of the Iliad Achilles consoles Priam·' on the loss of his son by reminding him that sorrow is the lot of mankind because the almighty Zeus wills it so.l The tragedia.ns of later times 1reM not without passages calculated to relieve the grief of a distressed character. In Sophocles' Electra the chorus consoles.. Electra lamenting the death of her father, and exhorts her to be calm, to trust in the gods, and to hope for the return of Orestes.~ Euripides likewise gives to the ohorus the task of alleviating Iolaus' sorrow on the death of Macaria by reminding her that Fate's decrees are unavoidable and, secondly, by pointing out the glory of a patriotic death.3 Among the prose writers the consolatio did not spring up immediately into full bloom. At first it was not a formal literary type but consisted in the precepts of in­ dividual philosophers expressed in whatever form they chose. '" ' . 9 "7 The writers of these precepts can be traced as far back as Democritus.5 After Democritus all tEe Greek schools of philosophy cultivated the consolatio. For proof of this we need only to read Cicero in his Tusculan Disputations where he not only names each school but gives its line of argument in the matter of consolation: Sunt qui unum officium consolantis putent malum illud omnino non esse, ut Cleanthi placet; sunt qui non magnum malum, ut Peripatetici; sunt qui abducant a malis ad bona, ut Eplcurus; sunt qui satis putent ostendere nihil inopinati accidisse, ut Cyr­ enaici. Chrysippus autem caput esse censet in consolando detrahere illam opinionem - maerenti, si ~e officio fungi putet justa atque debito. Naturally, when thinking of Greek philosophy, those two giants of the intellect, Plato and Aristotle, come to our minds. What did they do in the field of consolatory writings? Zanichelli, Bonn, 1927, XVI. 6 !!:!!£. 3.76 4 that Plato wrote consolatory literature, we have nothing of his directly addressed to any mourner. However, since he attacks Homer for portraying Achilles and the gods laboring under excessive grief,7 it seems th~~~P1ato considered eX.treme or protracted sorrow as something unworthy of men. Beyond that there is no further evidence. But if one finds no consolatory writings'. in Plato but only germs of what he would have said, he is even less suocessful in his search through Aristotle. Cioero has al­ ready said that ths peripatetios cultivated the cansolatio, and in the spurious works of Aristotle we find arguments against grief,8 but Aristotle himself has not even a line on the subject. The best one can do is to interpret his doctrine on the mean as presented in the Ethic~.9 According ~ to it Aristotle would oondemn exoessive grief but would tolerate temperate mourning. Rackham, 1~6. 5 nothing on consolation, nevertheless we do have the titles and some of the arguments of other Greek writers on the sub­ ject. This information was preserved for us by the Latin writers on consolation who flourished a century after Cicero. Diogenes of Sinope, the Cynic, wrote';P7fI/; ed.v,iTou , and Epicurus, Tr€fl. 'Hr"nivd.Kros T£A£UThS' • But the peer of them all, to judg'; by the testimony of the ancients, was Crantor, the Academician. All our infor­ mation about him is gathered from a short life by Diogenes Laertius,10 and from fragments of his writings in Plutarch,ll the Commentary ~ Plato's Timaeus by Proclus,12 and the Adversus Ethicos by Sextus Empiricus.13 Born at So11 in Cilicla about 340 B.

Just as the Western civilization inherited the European culture, the Romans inherited the Greek culture. These imprints over time, are refined and built upon to create a "new" culture. As Seneca put it, "A cultivates B and B cultivp.tes C; no one is his own master" (Seneca, 292). Focusing upon lit­ erature, we can observe the transition of the memorized and spo­ ken epics of the Greek culture to the written works of the Romans that are intertexted with ~lusions to particular epics. As twentieth century readers we can understand earlier works such as the Consolation ofPhilosophy by reading it against a tradition­ al background and applying the four fold scheme of interpreta­ tion. The following discussion will show how Boethius has deeply woven into his poems the philosophies and writing styles of his predecessors Homer, Seneca, Ovid and Plato, including the Stoics.

    The Life of the Author in the Letters of “Euripides” Johanna Hanink N 1694, Joshua Barnes, the eccentric British scholar (and poet) of Greek who the next year would become Regius Professor at the University of Cambridge, published his I 1 long-awaited Euripidis quae extant omnia. This was an enormous edition of Euripides’ works which contained every scrap of Euripidean material—dramatic, fragmentary, and biographical —that Barnes had managed to unearth.2 In the course of pre- paring the volume, Barnes had got wind that Richard Bentley believed that the epistles attributed by many ancient manu- scripts to Euripides were spurious; he therefore wrote to Bentley asking him to elucidate the grounds of his doubt. On 22 February 1693, Bentley returned a letter to Barnes in which he firmly declared that, with regard to the ancient epistles, “tis not Euripides himself that here discourseth, but a puny sophist that acts him.” Bentley did, however, recognize that convincing others of this would be a difficult task: “as for arguments to prove [the letters] spurious, perhaps there are none that will convince any person that doth not discover it by himself.”3 1 On the printing of the book and its early distribution see D.     BOETHIUS AND HOMER by MICHAEL FOURNIER OETHIUS wrote his Consolation of Philosophy while in prison Bawaiting execution.1 Although it has a place in numerous traditions and genres (e.g., philosophical dialogue, protreptic, Menippean satire, theodicy, epiphany literature, contemptus mundi) it is prima facie a consolatio.2 Yet in the studies of ancient consolations by Constant Martha, Karl Buresch, Rudolf Kassel, and Horst-Theodor Johann3 there are no more than a few brief references to Boethius, and virtually none in the more recent surveys of the tradition by Robert Gregg and Paul Holloway.4 However, as not only the title (which he gave to the work himself) and the frequent use of consolatory topoi, but also the parallels with the dramatic setting of the Phaedo5 make clear, Boethius understood his work to belong to this tradition. In addition to consolations for the bereaved, Cicero asserts that there are a host of consola- tions for other afflictions, referring to ‘definite words of comfort’ for dealing with poverty (de paupertate,…et ingloria), a life without office and fame (vita inhonorata) as well as ‘definite forms of discourse dealing with exile, ruin of country, slavery, infirmity, blindness, every accident upon which the term disaster can be fixed’ (Tusc. 3,81). While Boethius deals with a number of these topics, including poverty (2,5; 3,3), the loss of office (2,6; 3,4) and fame (2,7; 3,6), exile (1,5,2-5), ruin of country (1,4,20-27), and even figurative and metaphorical slavery (1m2,25), infirmity (1m1,10-11) and blindness (1m3,1-2), the ultimate cause of the grief for which he seeks consolation is not one of these traditional problems.6 Boethius’ work is, like Cicero’s Consolatio, an example of self- consolation.7 Like Cicero, Boethius was not content simply to read and reflect upon other consolatory writings.

Today we don’t need to look very far to see that our own generation is living through such a time, and this is true whether we are living in Europe or in Iraq, in Sudan or the Middle East, in Egypt or in the United States. As far as the West is concerned, we have only to think back to the horrific bombings that took place in the station at Madrid some time ago or to recall the shock and horror of 9/11. But there have been other horrors, other scenes of humiliation and terror, which we have witnessed on our television screens, and most notable of all, of course, the effects of the tsunami. Although these events may have taken place thousands of miles away, they too have seared our imagination. My question, then, is this: In such a time of afflic- tion, of what possible use to us is poetry? Can it be said to help or console us in any way? After 9/11, there was, as it happens, one remarkable, instinctive response of the people in New York,a response manifest not only in and around Ground Zero, but also in many of the streets of the city.     Atlantis: Myths, Ancient and Modern Harold Tarrant Abstract In this paper I show that the story of Atlantis, first sketched in Plato's Timaeus and Critias, has been artificially shrouded in mystery since antiquity. While it has been thought from Proclus to the close of the twentieth century that Plato's immediate followers were divided on the issue of whether the story was meant to be historically true, this results from a simple misunderstanding of what historia had meant when the early Academic Crantor was first being cited as an exponent of a literal rather than an allegorical interpretation. The term was then applied to straightforward stories that were told as if they were true. Iamblichus argued for a deeper meaning that did not exclude the truth, and Proclus' belief in an inspired Plato leads him to assume that a Platonic historia must be true. Hence he misreads Crantor as having been committed to historical truth and opposes him to allegorical interpreters. Scholars have continued to see Crantor as a proponent of the historical Atlantis without adequate examination of the evidence, an indication of our own need to preserve the tantalizing uncertainties of such powerful stories. I. Introduction Human beings, it seems, have a natural need for myth, a need that has not passed with the advent of the written word, but rather mutated. The advent of modern science, offering strikingly new ways of explaining the workings of our world, has not overridden the need to hear a plausible account of how this world began, as if we still need a narrative of its birth in order to understand how it is.

    SPYRIDON TZOUNAKAS CREMUTIUS CORDUS AND SENECA’S SELF-PROMOTION IN THE EXORDIUM OF THE CONSOLATIO AD MARCIAM The figure of Aulus Cremutius Cordus, Marcia’s father, occurs in Seneca’s Con - solatio ad Marciam already from the exordium of the work. In his attempt to console Marcia, who mourned the loss of her son Metilius for over three years, the philoso - pher reminds her of her stance when she lost her father, praises Cremutius Cordus’ brave opposition to his enemies, while at the end of the treatise Cremutius Cordus is given a speech and is presented as enjoying eternity and immortality in the heavens. As I shall attempt to demonstrate in this article, Seneca’s references to Cremutius Cordus play a very important role in the work, as they both reinforce the philoso - pher’s consolatory attempt and argumentation in multiple ways and facilitate his in - tention to promote his image in the context of the consolatory tradition. Cremutius Cordus was a famous Roman historian who wrote on the civil wars and the reign of Augustus. Under Tiberius he incurred the disgrace of Sejanus, the powerful prefect of the Praetorian Guard, was accused of maiestas for having eulo - gised Brutus and styling Cassius as the last of the Romans, and committed suicide by starving himself to death in A.D. 25. His books were burnt, but a few years later, under Gaius, they were re-published 1.
