Sains Malaysiana 48(12)(2019): 2613–2622 http://dx.doi.org/10.17576/jsm-2019-4812-02 First Systematic Study of Late Pleistocene Rat Fossils from Batu Caves: New Record of Extinct Species and Biogeography Implications (Kajian Sistematik Pertama Fosil Tikus Akhir Pleistosen dari Batu Caves: Rekod Baharu Spesies yang Telah Pupus dan Implikasi Biogeografi) ISHLAHUDA HANI SAHAK, LIM TZE TSHEN, ROS FATIHAH MUHAMMAD*, NUR SYIMAH IZZAH ABDULLAH THANI & MOHAMMAD AMIN ABD AZIZ ABSTRACT This paper presents the first systematic study of rat (Murinae) isolated dental fossils collected from Late Pleistocene (66000 years ago) cave breccia deposits in Cistern Cave, Batu Caves, Selangor. The cave is partly deposited with fine, coarse and pebbly breccia mixed with abundant mammal fossil cemented to the wall and ceiling of the cave. A total of 39 specimens of teeth and jaw fragments of Murinae were recovered among other large and small mammal remains. Dental morphology and size comparisons suggest that the fossils belong to extinct and extant species which occurred in Peninsular Malaysia and adjacent regions. The species identified are Chiropodomys gliroides, Leopoldamys sabanus, Leopoldamys minutus, Maxomys whiteheadi, Maxomys rajah and Rattus rattus. Almost all species identified from the fossils are known as markers for lowland forested environments. There was a positive correlation between GTL and the mean minimum temperature of the coldest month Quly), contrary to Bergmann's rule, but there was no significant correlation between GTL and either mean maximal annual temperature, mean maximal temperature of the hottest month (January), altitude or annual rainfall. There were differences in size between samples of different biotic regions: Animals from the south west Cape were largest, followed by those from the Namib desert, forest, south west arid zone, and the savanna, respectively. Animals from the zone of sympatry with Lemniscomys griselda, a larger herbivorous diurnal murid, were significantly smaller than those from allopatric zones. It is suggested that character release is a primary factor in determining body size of R. pumilio in southern Africa. Introduction The striped mouse Rhabdomys pumilio is a small (30-35 g), diurnal murid which is widely distributed in eastern and southern Africa. It occupies a wide ränge of habitats, all of which have some cover of grass, at latitudes of up to 1800 m above sea level in Zimbabwe (Smithers 1983), but avoids tropical woodland savannas and parts of the central Karoo where there is no grass (De Graaf 1981). -

Sa´nchez-Villagra1 The multiple skeletal components of the skull originate asynchronously and their develop- mental schedule varies across amniotes. Here we present the embryonic ossification sequence of 134 species, covering all major groups of mammals and their close relatives. This comprehensive data set allows reconstruction of the heterochronic and modular evolution of the skull and the condition of the last common ancestor of mammals. We show that the mode of ossification (dermal or endochondral) unites bones into integrated evolutionary modules of heterochronic changes and imposes evolutionary constraints on cranial heterochrony. How- ever, some skull-roof bones, such as the supraoccipital, exhibit evolutionary degrees of freedom in these constraints. -

Nambia and little bits of Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Zambia, July-August 2018 Michael Kessler In 1994, my wife Elke and I did our first joint trip to Namibia, spending 3 weeks mainly in the arid western parts of the country and seeing such goodies as Brown Hyena, Caracal, Black Mongoose, Honey Badger, 3 species of sengis, and Southern African Porcupine. In 2010, we made our first family trip to Africa to KwaZulu Natal, seeing much of the large game. So now we decided to return to Namibia with the family, with the aim of exploring some new areas and searching out the less easily seen species. Time and budget limited the trip to about 2½ weeks and after some deliberation, we settled on the following sites: Sesriem + Sossusvlei for the dunes; Walvisbay for Heaviside’s Dolphin + Welwitschia; Erindi for African Wild Dog and the other game; Toko Lodge for the night drives, especially for Aardvark; Etosha only briefly for the amazing wildlife spectacle; Mahango for the Okavango specials (birds and mammals); and Victoria Falls for, well, the falls. This resulted in the following Itinerary: 25.7: Left Zurich in the evening, arriving on 26.7.: am in Jo’burg, followed by a connecting flight to Windhoek where we picked up the rental car, did some grocery shopping, and fell into our beds at Arebbusch Lodge on the southern outskirts of the city. 27.7.: Long drive to Desert Homestead Lodge at Sesriem. 28.7.: am: visit to Sossusvlei; pm: Cessna flight over the dunes, followed by a night drive back to the lodge, seeing some Bat-eared Foxes. -

Our study examines the patterns of assemblages of rodents across four habitat types (i.e., Miombo woodland, Acacia woodland, grasslands and farmlands) in the savanna environment. Capture-mark-recapture (CMR) methods were applied for data collection across the Chembe Bird Sanctuary (CBS) landscape. The Non-metric Multi-Dimensional Scaling (NMDS) was used for exploratory data analysis, followed by Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Tukey–Kramer’s Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) post-hoc tests. -

Svensson, and Peter John Taylor Abstract Scientific investigations on the mammals of Angola started over 150 years ago, but information remains scarce and scattered, with only one recent published account. Here we provide a synthesis of the mammals of Angola based on a thorough survey of primary and grey literature, as well as recent unpublished records. We present a short history of mammal research, and provide brief information on each species known to occur in the country. Particular attention is given to endemic and near endemic species. We also provide a zoogeographic outline and information on the conservation of Angolan mammals. We found confirmed records for 291 native species, most of which from the orders Rodentia (85), Chiroptera (73), Carnivora (39), and Cetartiodactyla (33). There is a large number of endemic and near endemic species, most of which are rodents or bats. The large diversity of species is favoured by the wide P.
